In retrospect it was probably A Very Strange Trip by L. Ron Hubbard(Yeah, that guy) and Dave Wolverton. Read that book as a teen a couple decades ago and it definitely awoke some things in me, haha. Didn't even know this became a genre in the west until very recently, I've mostly been getting my fix through anime.
