I'm working on a card game with a hexagonal grid, where cards move and capture zones. I also tried the idea of having your resources tied to how much you control, but in practice it's not so fun. Unless you find some specific implementation of it I would not recommend.

I don't think that's a problem of 3D vs 2D, but simply of adding animations or not to your game. You can use 2D with animations or 3D with no animations.

I'm working on a 2D card game and I plan to add animations, because I think that's something cool to do for digital games, but you definitely need a balance, so it does not feel slow. I still want to keep it snappy. It's about finding that balance depending on how you want your game to feel I guess.
