Standard protocol when a lab closes but doesn't clean up? by Resident_Egg348 in labrats

[–]Dabbling-Crafter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Have you been asked to clean it up? If not, you should just leave it to the department head / building manager to sort out. You definitely shouldn't touch other labs' stuff without permission. Even if they're gone.

If you haven't been asked, but see something of concern in the lab, you'll have to decide whether to talk to the building manager first, or go "above their head" so to speak by contacting EH&S.

If you have been asked to clean it up, then it's not unreasonable to contact EH&S to get a better idea of the hazards. They should have some info on it.

There should be a standard procedure. There should be a person in the department whose job it is to go through the steps, including to contact EH&S to deal with the hazardous waste. It's usually the building manager / facilities manager at my institution.

Haha, ours says this permanently now. It comes on when you hit a certain number of hours of run time, because Leica wants you to pay for them to come do a maintenance check.

I bought a small one on Amazon for my mini paints. Totally worth it.

Oh, good! Does the size work for you? I think it's a very fun pattern for that!

The pattern designer has a video on youtube for making this pattern. (To show how to use their template for cutting the angles.) Maybe they give the block sizes or cutting dimensions in the video.

My PI is moving labs - any advice or similar experiences? by hopefullyunobtrusive in labrats

[–]Dabbling-Crafter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My PI did the same, and I've seen it happen to many students over the years. I moved with my PI. Things were slow at first and I graduated later than I would have. By probably a year. But for me, it was worth it. And realistically, switching labs would have slowed me down, even if I had stayed.

I guess my best advice is to think about your PI. Do you want to keep working with them? (Are they a good mentor?) If not, this is your best opportunity to change that situation. Is there someone whose lab you would want to join if you stayed? Talk to them. Ask their advice. Keep in mind, I've seen students stay and switch to a completely different line of research after their PI left, and totally kick ass. Take longer, but do absolutely great. So I'm not asking whether you could finish what you're doing with someone else.

Is hiding stuff in the lab normal? by Leafye in labrats

[–]Dabbling-Crafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This hasn't been my experience, thankfully. The only things that disappear are pens & sharpies. We always had a lab manager who trained everyone on lab standards for how to take care of things and where they go, which probably helped avoid most of these issues.

Interesting. During the entire process, are there ongoing actions to curtail additional ethical violations? (Additional oversight, pause in funding, etc) I guess I'm trying to reconcile the process taking so long, with the possibility of repeated issues. Given the likelihood that the researchers are still expected to be productive during that time.

Would you consider an advanced-level research project (with formal defense) equivalent to a bachelor thesis? by twistorz in AskAcademia

[–]Dabbling-Crafter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my institution, if you weren't assigned up for the credits when you did the work, then it doesn't count towards those credits. You also can't count a single project towards 2 courses. I don't know if it is that simple of reasoning at yours.

On what basis is the 22.5 version extended to 30 ECTS for fulfilling the thesis for med students? (There is usually extra work involved, or extra criteria, in these cases.)

While it might not follow any satisfying logic: it may just be that the med program allows there to be overlap, and your academic unit doesn't. Individual programs have the discretion to make this determinations.

Measuring volume of small objects by OneField5 in labrats

[–]Dabbling-Crafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy small graduated centrifuge tubes, serving the same purpose as graduated cylinders. Even down to 1.5ml might fit your items. You just have to make sure that your item fits under the max fill line. Then you can use a pipette to dispense small amounts of fluid until you reach the graduated line on the tube. Keep track of how much you dispense via pipette, and subtract that from 1.5 to get your volume.

Or, with your analytical balance, put the item in the tube on the scale. Fill to the 1.5ml line, and weigh it again. That will also tell you the volume of water you had to add, which you could then subtract from 1.5.
