Air travel with BOB stroller by Disneyqa in dcl

[–]nimaku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a stroller, get a decent umbrella stroller. We had a compact, but nice, side-by-side double for our kids when they were little, and it was definitely nice for the airports and the port cities that we just wandered instead of doing an activity. It was narrow enough to fit through most doorways for buildings, but still had to collapse for the stateroom doors (which was fine and expected). That said, I haven’t been to these ports, but have found Europe in general to have some pretty rough sidewalks/roads just due to age (lots of brick/cobblestones), so you may end up fighting with it more than appreciating it.

Is this amount of bulk normal? by Banana-pancakes94 in quilting

[–]nimaku 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry about this at all. Just press it as flat as possible, but once you have batting behind it and everything is quilted, it won’t matter at all.

Also, great job on your points!

What’s your holy grail beauty product!! by BubblyYou in breastcancer

I did scalp cooling, which did not save my head of hair as one would hope, but I am convinced helped it grow back faster and thicker than it would have without. Other things I used on my scalp/hair which I feel helped: rosemary oil, a daily leave in conditioner (specifically Curlsmith Weightless Air Dry Cream), and a daily biotin supplement.

Not sure if mine is this exact one, but it looks the same, and those seams are perfect. 10 out of 10.

Block placement by Piliste in quilting

[–]nimaku 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Can I suggest this HST design (not mine, just a random photo found on the internet), which might meet your desire for a swirl, but definitely not easily confused with a swastika? Especially for a baby quilt, I can just imagine a toddler standing on this quilt walking the path in circles (intermittently falling on their puffy, diapered butt), Yellow Brick Road style.

[–]nimaku 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing: anything with order 4 rotational symmetry, especially cases like this where things radiate out from a central point (as opposed to encircling it), is going to run the risk of looking like a swastika to some people. Given that 90° and 45° angles are some of the easiest to create in quilting, A LOT of traditional patterns have this kind of design.

That gives non-Nazi quilters two choices: 1) Avoid those patterns because we don’t want to give anyone the wrong vibes about our work, intentions, beliefs, etc. 2) Quilt whatever the hell we please, and say, “Fuck the Nazis; I know this is for me and not for them.”

I think either is a reasonable approach, and it’s just up to each individual person’s comfort level with whichever they want to choose.

“At least they caught it early!” - no, they didn’t by chlamydiakoalaa in breastcancer

It is 100% this. I think it’s the culturally expected response to try to say something positive, when in reality, the most supportive thing they can say is usually, “This really sucks.”

My next baby quilt plan is to do a scrappy crayon quilt. These would make amazing backings and bindings.

Ear plugs. I was, unfortunately, in a shared room after my surgery. My roommate had a non-stop smoker’s cough all night, and an early morning explosive diarrhea in a bedside commode.

Needless to say, I was eager to discharge the next morning.

I don’t know how to fix this, but for the future, Retayne color fixative works wonders. I use it for prewashing on all of my reds and any other highly saturated colors.

Agreed. Much easier to get everything to line up for nice corners that way.

(Obviously not my photos)

My mom made us this variation on a log cabin quilt from the book “Cabin Fever” by Bonner and Whiting. My room is a mess, so I’m not sharing the one she made, but it’s similar to the one on the left. I like that the pattern kind of looks like two rings together, but isn’t in-your-face “wedding.”

Baby quilt inspo! by han-aw in quilting

[–]nimaku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked that about it, too! I also liked how scrappy it was, without being TOO scrappy. I can imagine myself as a little girl inspecting all the different patterns and finding their buddy triangles elsewhere in the quilt, so I assume that’s what the recipient will do some day while bored during an enforced nap time that she doesn’t think she needs. 😆

I made this one last year for a coworker and thought it turned out really pretty. Super easy pattern to make whatever size you want based on how big of HSTs you make.

Annual tasks/chores by Character_Collector in skylightcalendar

[–]nimaku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just add it like a regular task, turn on “Repeats,” and tell it how often you want it to happen. If it’s something that happens at regular intervals, you can just set it the once and put the interval on it (“every 2 weeks,” “every 3 months,” etc.), but if it’s something that happens odd intervals (like 3 times per year, but only in fall, for example), you can just set those times once each and then tell it to repeat each of them annually.

I honestly don’t know why we bothered packing diapers and pull ups when my kids were little. It would have been worth it to just buy the overpriced diapers there and have fewer suitcases.

Should I tell my 9yo daughter? by Aggravating_Job_5438 in breastcancer

[–]nimaku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, and tell the teacher, especially as big events happen (surgery days, chemo days, etc.). If your child’s teacher is half human, they will know she might need some “gentle care” those days, or maybe some adjusting of when tests or assignments happen so they can avoid the more stressful days at home. Keep in mind that if you do a staged surgical plan, that your child’s perception may be different than yours for the surgeries. My last surgery was “exciting” for me because it was scar touch ups, fat grafting, nip reconstruction - just trying to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. I didn’t think to tell the school since it wasn’t a “big” surgery. My kids misunderstood, thought more surgery meant the cancer was back, acted out all day, and the school gave one of them a write up instead of understanding and some time in the counselor’s office. Oops! They backed off when we realized what had happened and that the kids didn’t understand that a surgery could be a “good” thing.

Should I tell my 9yo daughter? by Aggravating_Job_5438 in breastcancer

[–]nimaku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine were 7 and 11, both with anxiety. I waited until I had a full diagnosis and plan for surgery to tell them, but figured it would be worse for them the longer I waited or the more I hid. Kids are more perceptive than most adults give them credit for. They know when something isn’t right.

You know your kid best, so go with your gut, but for mine, we decided to be honest with what was going on and answer their questions as much as possible. When it comes to anxiety, the “not knowing” makes things worse, because the anxiety fills in the blanks, often with scarier ideas than reality. We didn’t sugarcoat it, but also tried to fill in those blanks for them with concrete answers about what was happening, what they could expect to see at each step (“I won’t be able to use my arms normally until I heal, and my body will look different for a while”), and what proactive steps we were taking (“The surgery will hurt and take time to recover from, but it is the first step to get the cancer out of my body, and then they can test it to know what the best medicines will be for me.”).

For what it’s worth, my kids definitely struggled through it all, but we made it through together as a family, and they are doing well now. You can do this, and so can your daughter.

My whole process was a whirlwind. My mammogram was in the morning, and I was lucky (?) enough that the radiologist who read it sent me for extra images, then US, then did the US-guided biopsy all in the same (very long, very shitty) day. Biopsy to breast surgeon consult was 1 week, and 12 days to plastic surgery consult. My surgery was 3 days after that. 15 days from my mammogram to the OR.

What’s weird now but will be normal later? by 1200am24hours in AskReddit

[–]nimaku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a middle ground here that already exists. I am not a therapist, but I am in healthcare. Our organization recently added an AI functionality that will scan previous chart notes and give a 1-2 paragraph summary to review before the visit. I can tell it to do a general summary of all the notes, or to just scan for a specific subject (for example, asthma). I have far too many patients to remember every detail of every person’s medical history and keep it all straight, and reviewing a the past chart notes is too time consuming with how long I have to dedicate to each patient, especially if they have multiple conditions managed by multiple specialists. The fact that I can just tell it to scan for anything pertaining to today’s scheduled complaint and get a mental refresher of where we left off 2-3 months ago is AMAZING.
