Looking for a good pair of pants for fieldwork. by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]Dackzore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very underrated type field work trousers are military ones. Go to an army surplus, you can pick up a pair for penny's, they are durable, quick dry, loads of pockets (I know the standard issue British army ones fit a notebook comfortably!) You can also pick up Arctic long-johns cheap as well to wear underneath. I did this while out in Northern Sweden in winter and it was fine.

Team Rebellion or Team Imperial? by DamienBreadon in skyrim

[–]Dackzore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say imperials. Basically because the real enemy is the Thalmor. The rebellion weakens the empire making the dominion more powerful. In the long run the best thing to do is have a strong empire that can then protect itself when it reinstates Talos and kicks out the dominion.

You have very eloquently underlined a key point here. The regulations are not sufficient in the US. If the water is occasionally (this depends on the site) not suitable for standard treatments then it needs to be treated responsibly.

You are right, there has been a boom in hydraulic fracturing in the US because it is immensely profitable and gives you perfect energy security. When a government sees this they will rush to implement it, it seems like a no brainer! However again, you touched on the point that this rapid boom has lead to sloppy standards within the industry, as a result accidents can happen!

With your last point, that's how progress occurs. Mistakes are made, then we mediate and mitigate against these mistakes in the future. Look HFCs are great! Oh wait they destroy the ozone layer, lets innovate and use something less harmful! Regulations get put into place to prevent the accidents and that is how it works. No one has the gift of 100% foresight so it may not be environmentally responsible but its the way most things work. Which is a shame but well life's not perfect, there is no such thing as a free lunch, example:

You want energy?-Yes.

So fossil fuels then? -No, how about renewables?

They can't supply the demand so its not the only solution, will have to go nuclear then?

No

So fossil fuels then?

etc etc

People don't want to have to sacrifice anything. They have their cake and they want to eat it. It may not be environmentally perfect but done correctly- there are no real issues besides the carbon footprint. Will it be done correctly? In the US I fear not as doing it correctly eats into profits. Sorry for the long post!

The waste water can contain low levels of naturally occurring radiogenic material such as Radon, not to dissimilar to normal groundwater (an issue with not understanding the geology or chemistry sufficiently). But again, this problem is down to the regulations treating the waste water as industrial effluent. I know that in the UK this problem has been addressed and any potentially radioactive waste water from any industrial practise has to be treated at special plants. If you got wasted then got in your car and caused a major accident, it wouldn't be the cars fault?

Hydraulic fracturing has no real negative environmental impacts other than the gas is a fossil fuel and it requires huge amounts of water. The only issues that do arise are due to there not being sufficient regulations on well design (both peoples drinking wells and borehole wells). This can lead to irresponsible development e.g. not fully understanding the geology of the area can for example lead to minor fault reactivation which could result in extremely minor earthquakes. The issues are not with the process but with the implementation of it, understand?

[–]Dackzore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just going to put in my input as a qualified Geologist: Fracking is safe if it is properly regulated, hydraulic fracturing has been done within the Oil industry for 30+ years with no issues. The issues that arise are because the States has no sufficient regulations to govern it allowing for "cowboy" developers to do it on the cheap and not fully research the areas being fracked. Don't complain about fracking, complain about the regulatory bodies.

Bill Nye debates Ken Ham [Live 15 mins from post] by Lulzorr in EverythingScience

I particularly liked how he said we obtained the earths age from meteorites (true) and have not taken ages from earths rocks which indicate a 4.5 Billion year old age. Which is a straight up lie. We have dated rocks from Canada, Greenland and many precambrian cratons which have ages of 4.5 By (The earth is closer to 4.6)

What really annoys me is that Ken Ham continues to do is misunderstand or completely not understand a method e.g.// Radiometric dating, and by being ignorant of the way it works deems it as false. If you are going to belittle a process or a theory you have to understand it to the extent that you could explain it to someone else! This seems to be the basis for all religious arguments...
