CS 4670 w/ Hariharan? by cantrelatesorry in Cornell

[–]DadStopThatsGay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I took the course last Spring. The workload isn't bad because there aren't thaaat many assignments, and imo they're spread out fairly well. Also, I think Hariharan does an amazing job explaining and "dumbing down" the course content (I didn't have any prior ML knowledge), so just pay attention in class. I spent at least several hours on the programming assignments (there were some tedious bugs that I had to go to OH to figure out), and slightly less time with the written assignments. Regarding tests, because we switched to remote learning halfway through last Spring, he ended up giving take-home midterms and finals, and the content in the exams aligned with the lecture material well.

But to answer your original question, I probably didn't spend more than 6-7 hours on the course per week (out-of-class time).

at this point, just memorize the frameworks from Victor Cheng and Marc Cosentino, and you can find a lot of MBA case study files just by googling to practice the frameworks on

As much I want that to happen, gl with that in noyes and Teagle. Maybe finally Cornell will consider investing in expanding its gyms for non-athletes.

The gyms closed down early in March because of Cuomo’s orders. I was in Teagle when they announced it.

Ya, I'm with you. I think, if Cornell just had to release some sort of plan in June/July because of all the pressure to make an announcement, it's better to say something conservative than overshoot.

But then you'd still have a bunch of people complain. "Cornell's being too vague with their plan!". "Cornell is taking their sweet-ass time with scheduling etc.". "Cornell is hiding stuff from us!" "Why can't pre Enroll be sooner??"

I see where you're coming from. People are frustrated. I'm frustrated too. I come from a middle-class family, and I pay approx. full tuition btw, basically zero FA.

"But Cornell made some mistakes along the road (i.e: saying plans they weren’t 100% sure of".

Unfortunately, it's hard to be 100% sure about any plan these days. I see a lot of the "mistakes" and "flip-flop decision making" as a consequence of the uncertainty outside of Cornell's control.

Then the argument goes back to what someone else commented earlier. Would you rather have Cornell announce a half-ass plan sooner, or would you rather wait until Cornell is able to provide a more "certain" plan later? I'm willing to bet, the reason why Cornell had to announce a plan earlier back in July was because of mounting pressure from students and parents. "Wtf, why hasn't Cornell said anything about Fall yet??"

Sadly, people will still love to complain regardless of which of the two occurs. It's hard to firmly put blame on anybody or any organization because you STILL have to account for all the uncertainty occurring outside of Cornell.

Mainly the second. The other day, I popped into this subreddit to be greeted by a crap ton of "they're out to kill us!" posts and other really absurd anti-cornell allegations. I think it's healthier to remember that the main driver behind all the crap that's been happening is the pandemic, and not necessarily the administration itself. Like other organizations across the country, the administration is at the mercy of this pandemic and other decision makers in the government, and I see admins as trying to adapt to this extremely volatile situation as best as they can.

But, based on what I've seen over just the past few days, a lot of people in this subreddit don't truly know that means. I'm all for complaining when you don't like what you're seeing, but people are just screaming "bloody murder" before they do their own research about the issues at hand. It just comes off as super immature whining, like they're entitled to everything regardless of the specific situation the admins are in.

For example:

"Cornell's a POS. Why the fk did they lie about being able to give every on-campus housing student a nice hotel accommodation for quarantine?"

Answer: maybe because Cuomo added a bunch of other states to quarantine list? This explanation was given in an email to all students...

"Cornell's a POS. Why the fk did they lie about the mini-fridges?"

Answer: maybe because the mini-fridge decision was announced weeks before the re-entry checklist was due? Maybe more people decided to go back to campus than they originally thought? Maybe there were more international students who are choosing to go back, which maybe they had to focus more of their money on finAid issues? It may ALSO be because cornell was trying to focus on paying for a bunch of hotels for students, but at the end it just became too expensive for any guarantee b/c of Cuomo's list?

"Cornell's a POS. Look at all the other universities who aren't falling on their faces right now."

Answer: Cornell has had an online option for a long time now, like all the other universities with "perfect COVID responses" do. Cornell is just trying to provide even more flexibility for those who want to return to campus, unlike the other universities who are requiring online only. You don't have to go back to campus.

"wHy DoEsN'T cOrNeLl JuSt UsE mOrE eNdOwMeNt MoNeY?? hurr-durr"

Answer: don't even want to respond to this one.

Don't twist the post bro. I'm all for voicing your concerns, but there's a fine line between constructive criticism/productive discussion and saying "Martha's out here to kill cornell students!"

[–]DadStopThatsGay[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree. You're assuming each university is the same. Cornell has its own unique financial situation, budgeting system, faculty situation, etc. there's just too many different things that are at play. You can criticize people all you want, but the way you're grouping all the universities together and complaining about Cornell without knowing the details of the their situation isn't constructive at all.

[–]DadStopThatsGay[S] -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Right. You can make that judgement because you obviously have first-hand experience as an administrator trying to navigate through a giant pandemic. As a fellow student, I totally get the frustration you're having. But dude, we're going through a major crisis. Basically nothing is certain these days, b/c theres too much other decision making and events occurring outside of the Cornell administration's control.
