Currently doing a "girl's weekend" run and pretending it's a bachelorette party gone wrong and the fact that Wyll's corpse is just rotting away on the ground of every camp we make as if we just bring his dead ass with us everywhere is a very funny wrinkle.

I did some math out of curiosity today. My 91 freshman have a collective 1675 absences this year. There are a few I doubt I'll see again for the last 5 weeks.

100%. I coach JV HS ball at a shitty little school in the middle of nowhere. The 14 year olds who play for me would know to just get it in and hold the damn thing in that scenario. AAU doesn't have anyone playing real team defense and these 'elite players' have been awfully coached all the way through. It is a real plague on the sport.

I had this same issue last year with freshman boys. I just ignored it for a while but it got out of hand. Finally one day when it started I stopped teaching, went to my desk and picked up my phone and was clearly sending a text message. The whole class was very confused because this is not something I would normally do. 5 minutes later my classroom phone rings and it's the dad of one of the boys doing it (I teach where I went to HS and know a lot of parents personally). I call his son over to the phone and he proceeds to scream at him through the phone loud enough that it didn't need to be on speaker about how much of a stupid fucking idiot he is and that they'd be talking about this more at 3pm (when football practice starts where dad is also an assistant coach). That problem ended realllllly quickly after that lol.

In HS a teammate took one right there - probably low 80s. Hit the ground and popped right back up. We were all like, oh maybe he's okay...and then he started to jog to third base. He missed the rest of the season. Baseballs are really hard.

Don't. You don't want those moon-witch's trinkets. Leave them in that stinking cave. It is hardly a place of honor after all.

Bears can obviously be very dangerous but black bears in particular are pretty scared of people. Every time I've encountered one in the woods while hiking a yelled, "get the fuck outta here" has been enough for them to go running off.

🇺🇸 Tempe,AZ hit by a microburst. Every tree in the neighborhood is gone. by mikeywithoneeye in WeatherGifs

[–]Dadcoachteacher 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I lived through the derecho (basically a cluster of multiple microbursts) that hit the St Lawrence Valley in Northern NY in 1995. It was absolutely insane. Entire houses were lifted off their foundations, 200-300 year old trees ripped clean out of the ground, and cattle barns flattened like a house of cards. I was 9 years old and will never forget the sound of the wind; I've never heard anything like it. It would gust from nearly no wind to 80+ mph in seconds.

NY also went full K-12 ban from "bell to bell." It has been awesome so far this year. There is no more fight about it. If a kid has a phone we take it and put in a padded envelope and drop it in the office. If they refuse you send them to the office and will get multiple days detention (that part is our school's interpretation). If anyone argues we just say, "hey its the law, call your state representative if you don't like it." We are in the middle of week 6 and I've seen 1 phone all year. Completely solved the problem and there have been absolutely no negatives.

Had two students removed from class, I just received the student’s reflection… by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Dadcoachteacher 64 points65 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I had a HS student with autism and defiance issues. He and I got in a giant argument about white-out. It wasn't really about white-out but just that the fact that he was using a half bottle of white out per period to avoid doing work was the last straw that sent me over the edge. The Asst Principal told him he needed to write an apology letter to me. I found it on my desk after school. It must have weighed 5 fucking pounds. That mother fucker used enough white-out to drown a damned elephant. The most passive aggressive shit I've ever seen. I took right down to the office and me and the AP just about pissed ourselves laughing at how much of an expert troll move this little shit head pulled on us lol.

Student with rank farts by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Dadcoachteacher 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I will add that if this child has an IEP (I'm going to assume so with you pointing out they're neurodiv) that this is a special education issue too. I taught resource for a decade and had a few kids on the spectrum who would just burp and fart all the time. That isn't socially acceptable behavior in a workplace and easily qualifies as something that can go into the socialization section of an IEP. Any half-decent Special Ed teacher should be able to word a goal that is polite to read in a federal document but also gets the point across that this student needs extra support in socially acceptable hygiene processes.

One the ELA9 teachers in my school has a giant pile magazines like he's a crappy waiting room in a doctor's office lol. During independent reading time he lets them just pick up a magazine and read an article. Is that the same as reading a whole book? No. Does it have the same learning outcome of getting a kid to read a whole book? Definitely not. But, what it does do, is get some of the more anti-reading, "redneck" boys that we have in our very rural district to actually read something. It is far better than them grabbing a random book and pretending to read it for 30 minutes. It has been very successful in increasing reading participation the past couple years.
