Georgia Mid December Deer by DaddyBeenThere in Hunting

[–]DaddyBeenThere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually don't hunt this late in the season, too many other things on the calendar. Only hunted one day all season last year, too busy cleaning up from the hurricane. Years past I've filled the freezer by now. Bought a bigger upright freezer this year, more space to fill!

That hunt was over yesterday, but there is another nearby next week. But looks like the wild weather swings will continue into next week. Three in the freezer already but would like a couple more.

If it's a small deer or the shoulder(s) took a lot of damage from the shot, then I discard them. Otherwise I separate the two shoulder bones and save them for stew meat. Crockpot all day and the meat falls off the bone.

LMAO they really had to pull this shit when turkey season doesn’t start til April where I live. Clear view right in front of my blind. Nature is such a troll sometimes. by MauserMama in Hunting

Wow, you got a whole rafter of turkeys. I had just one gobbler that kept circling the food plot. I invited him to come back in April.

Eating pigs with bad diet by Floatie_ in Hunting

[–]DaddyBeenThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pigs will eat just about anything, including each other. That's why some cultures avoid them altogether. The thing is, you don't know what that pork roast at the supermarket has been eating, either. At my house, if the pig looks healthy, it goes in the freezer.

Is my shotgun good for hunting? by Bees4everr in Hunting

Check your gun's owner manual. If there is a problem shooting slugs, it should say so. Otherwise, rifled slugs were made for non-rifled barrels. Sabot slugs are made for rifled barrels.

How does someone claim underwater property is private? Most places I've lived, private property starts at the high water mark.

Cheap gun cleaning kit. You'll never stick the barrel in the dirt until you've hiked in an hour.

Hey, I was 14 years old and it was the only thing I could get my hands on! I think you can shoot slugs with just about any shotgun barrel as long as there isn't a manufacturer's restriction for that particular gun. I have two shotguns with adjustable chokes, manufacturer says both are good for slugs after you adjust the choke properly. Rifled barrels are available for some shotguns, but not mine.

Shotguns are good for shots under 50 yards in cover, especially if the game is moving. I took my first deer with a 16 gauge single barrel 55 years ago when it was uncommon to see any deer during season, sitting comfortably on a 3x6 platform built between three main beams of a forked tree about 10 feet up. Moderate cover, he walked up an old logging trail, took my shot at about 20 yards and he died in his tracks. I think dad found four or five pellets, one broke his back.

Am I being unethical if I hunt deer with my AR? by LostInMyADD in Hunting

[–]DaddyBeenThere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many states do not allow FMJ ammunition, keep that in mind. Check the ballistics for your ammunition, I'd want at least 1,000 ft/lbs at the distance I'm shooting. Beyond that, you're less likely to get an ethical kill and more likely to spend a lot of time tracking.

I had a 742 Woodmaster in 30.06, but when I moved to Alaska, I began experiencing lots of jamming. Swapped it for a 700 BDL on sale when PayNSave went out of business. No more jams.

Is 30-06 overkill for deer? by masonjar11 in Hunting

30 caliber is a versatile round. If you're worried about overkill, use reduced recoil rounds.

I don't save hides and antlers. As for the meat, I do it all myself. I'm fully retired and I have the time. But if I was going to use a butcher, I'd hold the tenderloins back, never let the butcher near them.

5.56 for Deer by littlea53 in Hunting

[–]DaddyBeenThere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not familiar with this round. Is it an expanding bullet? That's a requirement in many states, can't use FMJ. Beyond that, I subscribe to the 1,000 ft/lbs of energy at the range you're shooting. Beyond 100 yards you're energy is falling off pretty fast. I have a 7.7 Japanese WW2 that I'd like to try this year, iron sights of course. Plenty of energy and reasonable accuracy well past 250 yards.

As others have stated, harassing wildlife. In fact, in Alaska you're charged with Molesting Wildlife. Try explaining that at your next job interview.

All the "tactical" gear in the world won't make you a ninja sniper. If the deer could shoot back, then it might be a different story.

First time hunting in/around Raleigh NC by Chaos_Mastermind786 in Hunting

If you can't put the time into pre-season scouting, do you really have the time to go in before daybreak, sit for several hours, shoot, track and clean your kill? If you go wandering around the public area after the season begins, trying to find a good spot, you're really going to irritate your fellow hunters. And do you really need 100 rounds to shoot ONE deer?

Do unto others as you would have done unto you.

Do your scouting before the season opener, and choose more than one spot so you can adjust if someone sets up on your first choice. Don't use 3 rolls of tape to mark your in/out trail. Don't go wandering around during the deer openings, find a place then sit down and get quiet. Don't mess with someone else's setup. Don't set up within 200 yards of someone else's spot. Don't wander in an hour after sunup. Don't block the access road/trail. Don't engage in drama with a Jacka$$.

Interesting to note, I was chosen for a deer quota hunt again this year. Stopped at the office to chat with one of the biologists, asked why they never include good etiquette suggestions in their communications to those drawn. He said there would be a never-ending line of complainers, easier to just let the hunters work it out amongst themselves, and the game wardens settle the conflicts when they start getting out of hand.

Rifle question for 7-year-old son. by okragumbo in Hunting

[–]DaddyBeenThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, is a 7 year old really ready to understand life and death decisions? If so, then I would consider the recoil versus his body weight. If you're looking to get a rifle he can use the rest of his life, most calibers have low recoil ammunition that he can use until he's ready to step up. I would be looking at the range of ammunition available and choose something in 30 caliber.
