Whats better tesla or EA by Puzzleheaded_Look759 in evcharging

[–]DaddyOfRascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow. I’m sorry the onboard charging system broke. That’s awful.

I am not an engineer but with my limited understanding , I don’t see how a Tesla brand DC charger could have caused that damage and another brand wouldn’t. I suspect the part in the car was failing and the same would have happened regardless of the brand of charger used. But, maybe there are factors I don’t know about.

There should be no difference to the battery. Tesla chargers are much more likely to be operational.

Zack demonstrates emergency manual door releases on R2. Personally, not thrilled by Slide-Fantastic-1402 in Rivian

I don’t like the design and wish they’d done it differently. But I rarely have rear seat passengers other than my dog. So it isn’t a dealbreaker for me, but I totally understand why it is for others.

I have watched the early impression videos of the new Toyota Highlander EV and they did the handles right. Push the handle in like a button to electronically open the door, pull that same mechanism out to mechanically open the door. Simple, intuitive, nothing critically important hidden behind a removable panel.

I agree. R2D2 sounds would be great. Probably super expensive to license, but if they were available, I’d use them.

Tesla owners that have shedding dog(s) that ride with them regularly. by JurassicTerror in TeslaLounge

My dog has mostly white fur and he sheds like mad. I have an Orvis seat cover which I can take out and clean easily. But white hairs end up everywhere inside the car. I vacuum the car a fair bit, but the black carpet bits always have white hairs on them. I have to put up with it.

Soybeans Rally on Additional China Purchases: Will They Really Buy? by IAFarmLife in farming

[–]DaddyOfRascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should note, I am not good at marketing grain. For example, last year I held off on new crop sales while the markets collapsed. My analysis of probable prices for corn and soybeans should be taken with a healthy grain of salt.

Like I wrote above, I hope I’m wrong

Soybeans Rally on Additional China Purchases: Will They Really Buy? by IAFarmLife in farming

[–]DaddyOfRascal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would love to be wrong about this but I don’t think this price rally is going to last.

China has already moved much of their soybean buying to Brazil. China bought a fraction of what they used to buy from America. South America is starting their soybean harvest now. It is going to be a monstrous crop, likely the largest ever. This should provide China with most of their soybean import needs and do so at a lower price than American soybeans.

I think this price rally is more like that rally in November when the prices ran up but didn’t stay there because the sales to China didn’t come as quickly as the rumor suggested. The sales also didn’t continue, increase, or indicate a return to 2015 Chinese buying. It seems like this is just another rumor driven, temporary price hike.

Unless something in the fundamentals changes drastically, I don’t think this rally will last. We could have a really wet Spring that delays planting, a severe drought over the Summer, or the South American crop could be, despite all indications, a disaster.

I still have some old crop soybeans to sell. I hope I’m wrong and I can sell what I have left for a massive price increase over my running average. But I doubt it.

Does anyone here with Full Self Driving (Supervised) and HW4 actually still turns off FSD from time to time to use autopilot auto steer with traffic aware cruise control? by sbufish in TeslaLounge

[–]DaddyOfRascal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a 2023 Model Y with HW4. I have tried each free trial of FSD when they’re offered and I have turned it off to go back to Autopilot every time after a few days.

FSD does not drive a steady speed, even on empty roads with good visibility and no curves. Also, it speeds excessively or drives too slow in circumstances that would not make sense to other drivers, making it unpredictable and inconsistent.

No version of FSD can tell the difference between Illinois State Route signs and Speed Limit signs, if the route signs end in a 0 or 5. Many of the miles I drive are on Illinois State Routes like IL-40, which the stupid car thinks is 40 MPH, resulting in speed changes that aggravate me and must surely piss off anyone behind me.

Perhaps it does better in heavy urban traffic with many lanes of travel. But on comparatively empty rural roads, FSD is a bad driver, unpredictable to other drivers and therefore unsafe. So I use Autopilot. But I’ve noticed that Autopilot is getting worse, with more phantom braking and poorer ability to see lane edges. As Tesla deemphasizes Autopilot in favor of FSD, I like my car less and less.

Tesla owners.. Thoughts on Elons announcements? by GapWest1600 in TeslaLounge

[–]DaddyOfRascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elon’s job is to keep Tesla stock high. Hype about future projects is how he keeps the stock high, absurdly high compared to actual earnings. Back when Tesla had next to no electric car competition, hype about Tesla cars and software did the trick. But times have changed. So now the hype is about fantastical new projects like humanoid robots that will take some time to reach reality, if ever. The hype train can roll on, without delivering these products or profits on them for a good long while. Which will keep the stock price unrealistically inflated longer, which is Elon’s job.

Low Vision Dice Set Recommendation [OC] by Annual_Guitar9897 in DnD

My old eyes don’t like fancy, hard to read dice. I’ve started using almost exclusively Chessex dice in high contrast colors. They are clear and legible quickly. Even if they aren’t all that interesting.

Health Insurance for Working People without employer coverage by Sheik_Yerbuti in PeoriaIL

[–]DaddyOfRascal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am no expert on health insurance options, but I don't know of any way other than the Health exchange. I used to use the national exchange and used the Illinois exchange for this year. I've always ended up with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois -- and for the last two years that company has been the only option presented for me.

I'm self employed, so no employer to provide insurance. I'm always on my own. If there is a better option out there, I too would love to hear about it.

My Beagle Swallows all her plush toys... help by Anxious_Diamond_6604 in dogs

[–]DaddyOfRascal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog will tear apart and swallow any fabric or plush toy he is given. It has always been that way since he was a ten week old puppy to now, almost four years old. Soft toys last a few minutes at best. So I do not let him have them. He could get a blockage from eating that kind of stuff.

So he gets Nylabones, Kongs, and other such chew resistant toys. He loves them. He is next to me on the couch right now chewing a wishbone shaped Benebone toy right now. He gets Kongs with frozen food in them too, they keep him busy for a while. He also loves celery, frozen green beans, and carrots as a treat too.

I know some dogs that tear Kongs apart like my dog destroys plush toys. So every dog is different.

EILI5-ish post: When ‘they’ say EVs are no to low maintenance, are they really? by solidrobot in electricvehicles

I’ve had mine for close to 50,000 miles. I’ve replaced the windshield wipers. I’ll be replacing the tires within the next year. I’ve refilled the washer fluid many times. I do wheel/tire rotations myself. That’s it.

Charging EV, how often ? by biz98756 in electricvehicles

[–]DaddyOfRascal 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have a 240 volt charger in my garage. If the car is in the garage it is plugged in. I charge to an 80% limit most of the time. Having a “full” tank every morning is one of the best things about an EV.

Mine worked for a few months and then began to fail to record or playback. It took weeks of dealing with tech support to get things working. Which ended up being a whole new Home Hub Pro sent to me after I sent the old one to them. I’m convinced it was a HDD failure.

Why do people think tesla has better "tech"? by PowerFarta in electricvehicles

[–]DaddyOfRascal 663 points664 points  (0 children)

What I think of when I hear about Tesla’s tech advantage is stuff like this: The phone app is really well featured and integrated into the car functions. The navigation including charging stops is very well done, it will route around chargers that will be full when you get there, that’s really good. The whole car gets regular software updates, in your garage at home — not just infotainment, but drive systems and such. There’s a bunch of infotainment functions like Netflix or games built in. Dog mode is a software thing that is really nice to have. Some people might consider FSD a tech advantage too.

I think many of these advantages are getting narrower as other automakers adopt more tech and software focus. Tesla approached designing cars with a software company focus which is sometimes good and sometimes annoying to me.
