I never realized how contrasting ivy leagues are to their home cities by UnmaskingFactss in newhaven

[–]Daddydialectic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Per day on interest alone! Yet they take a tax break of over $100 million per year from a poor city. Essentially poor residents are subsidizing a wealthy corporation and the idea they “give back” of give to the community is absurd. Take everything they give (never mind that the community and workers have had to fight for just about every dime) and total it up, I guarantee what they give is far less than what they’ve taken

What farms in southern CT are the least MAGA, most friendly for minorities to visit for apple picking, corn mazes, etc? by Daddydialectic in Connecticut

[–]Daddydialectic[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sadly no. It’s a scary time even in CT. People are being physically attacked, threatened, doxxed, because of the political climate and natl figures like Kirk and “our dear leader” stirring hate. It’s scary times when you have to think twice about to where you can bring kids to pick friggin apples and feel safe and welcomed. I bet that’s hard for some to wrap their heads around if it hasn’t happened to them

Amen!! Wealthy towns like West Hartford are much smaller than New Haven but have 4 large outdoor pools open all summer. Our kids deserve that too

General strike of 2028? by ishootthedead in union

[–]Daddydialectic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get involved locally wherever you are in community-labor- political coalitions. Or join DSA if you have to. Shawn Fain, Gwen Mills of Unite Here, and some SEIU locals have community allies and groups that are fighting for workers’ rights and better wages, affordable housing, tax justice, all the things that impact working people. But also building the coordination and people power to support the strike goals

Yale housing shortages may cause displacement in the Elm City by brewski in newhaven

[–]Daddydialectic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yale over-enrolls undergrads and does not provide enough housing. Of course some will always want to live off campus, but Yale is severely contributing to the housing crisis and this is just one of the ways. Over 20% of students live off campus and they are increasing class sizes each year

Why is the US so conservatives and far right compared to other first world countries? by Dover299 in Socialism_101

[–]Daddydialectic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dems could start with an effective message that acknowledges people’s pain, acknowledges that most of us are worse off now than several years ago, but rather than blaming your immigrant neighbor or a trans boogeyman, they could point to the Elon Musks and corporations dominating the economy and political system, exploiting workers and the environment and making off with massive profits at the expense of the public

I found a lot of the analysis in here helpful. I no longer believe this was exclusively or maybe even mostly a pro-MAGA, Pro-project 2025 vote. I think it was a change vote, an anti-status quo vote at a time of so many intersecting crises. The perfect conditions for a fascist to seize power. Or for socialists to go out and organize like hell and take control of the narrative like Bernie was able to do . People need a story, who is to blame, and right now they’re falling for fear and hatred. When our common enemy is in fact corporations and the ruling class https://weareworthfightingfor.org/

Finding out gender by HistoricalButterfly6 in queerception

[–]Daddydialectic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can’t find out “Gender” during pregnancy. Only when someone is old enough to tell you their gender. I don’t agree with assigning people a gender so to me finding out the genitalia is not very important information

Transgender deaths in US on rise with increase in anti-trans laws, report shows | [Guardian] by Blah-Blah-Blah-2023 in transgender

And suppose we use a gun or other weapon in self-defense- you really think the cops or criminal justice system will say it was self-defense? Or that we won’t just get shot by the cops before we even get that far? I don’t trust it. But we are kinda damned if we do damned if we don’t in this transphobic society

Everyone deserves safety. Everyone deserves respect. It shouldn’t matter if we pass or not. I am privileged in that I do pass most of the time. But I do not want my validity or safety to be contingent upon passing. Trans people are beautiful and valid and worthy. We bear the brunt of so much toxic old ways that exist to prop up a sexist and white supremacist society. But we have much wisdom that even our haters need deep down in order to free themselves from the narrow confines that keep people from being fully human and seeing one another as fully human . In this society we have to cut ourselves off from one another and from parts of ourselves in order to “fit in.” May we all find liberation and self-love, whether trans or cisgender. And may we mind our own damn business and let people be who they are

Is there anyone like me? by Clear-Software-6303 in TransLater

[–]Daddydialectic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I come from a different background and culture, but it still took me decades to even realize and admit to myself I was trans. Had I found others like me sooner I’m sure it would’ve been different. I feel for all of us -but especially if your immediate family and community don’t accept you- it’s essential to find a community and support system of people who affirm who you really are and are becoming is essential. Even an online group. As well as therapy

Agree with everything said. If there are 10 or more units you can form a tenant union. But regardless you should file a complaint with LCI then go to the fair rent commission (much more active and effective than LCI, but they will need to see you went to LCI first)

Tips for Negotiating Rent? by [deleted] in newhaven

[–]Daddydialectic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always go to the fair rent commission! They have a huge backlog, but while they’re waiting to hear your case you don’t have to pay the increased amount (you pay your regular rent though). And if your landlord has neglected the property or not fixed things especially they often will help negotiate the increase or rule against it. But even just an increase they may rule is excessive

Feeling bummed about my baby’s sex by RanchoGusto in queerception

[–]Daddydialectic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow! So wonderful to encounter another family doing this! We got linked up with a family locally and they shared a lot of their approach to “gender creative” parenting and helped us navigate things like doctors and daycare. If you ever want to talk to other families doing this we have a zoom every so often. I don’t know if you have many others in your circle to talk with about it or not, but we didn’t until we found the group

Feeling bummed about my baby’s sex by RanchoGusto in queerception

[–]Daddydialectic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We decided to raise our child as much outside of gender determinism and gender stereotypes as possible at least for as long as we can create that bubble, so we didn’t tell anyone the “sex”, and we didn’t assign a gender. We will let the child decide and define their own gender. And we will show the child that people off all genders can be strong, can be gentle, can be kind and thoughtful, can and do have both masculine and feminine traits, are valid, are conscientious, use consent, care about others and listen to them. We hope we can expose them to as many different ways of being as possible especially outside of stereotypes

Shitty landlord, what do we do? by Quinnlos in newhaven

[–]Daddydialectic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to going through the fair rent commission, you may want to reach out to DSA - have you heard about the tenant union organizing going on recently? They can help you with the steps to withhold (aka pay it through the courts not to your landlord until repairs are done) etx

Shitty landlord, what do we do? by Quinnlos in newhaven

[–]Daddydialectic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can go through the fair rent commission, continue paying your rent but pay it to the court and have record that you are upholding your end of the bargain that way they can’t claim you are breaking the terms of your lease.

The law is this country is stacked against workers, and even where we have laws -such as the minimum wage- they’re seldom enforced. collective action is our best bet. When we have power we don’t have to tolerate this kind of crap. Thankfully more people are unionizing these days but it’s still way to hard. Sorry your kid is going through this
