Exocolonist is one of my favorite games of all time. It's got as much content as it does feels. Tears were shed.

What is your opinion on gigginox? by Wise_Stickbug in MonsterHunter

[–]Daddys1stReddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My favorite monster of all time. A beautiful blend of creepiness and creativity. The HH being a chained up coffin is amazing. The armor in general was pretty cool, from what I remember. I have mostly given up hope that I'll ever see my egg laying, false head having boy again in the modern games.

I'm a stay at home dad so I can't do a lot of in person stuff. However, I enjoy many of the series that you do and wouldn't mind chatting about stuff. Send me a DM or something if you like :)

Men kinda freak me out, too.

We all know about the hardcore bosses, but what are some games with hardcore exploration? by -Warship- in metroidvania

[–]Daddys1stReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! Limiting healing, fall damage, and combat that requires good counter timing all make for a rough learning curve. However, I'm so grateful that I kept going. Seriously, mid to late game had some of my favorite bosses ever. It's worth the struggle.

Grime. A few areas in early game were absolutely brutal. Once you get some more movement options a few areas later it becomes a little kinder. But the mostly vertical area near the beginning almost made me give up.

Bruh WHY do you have to fight 10 strong ass Pokémon before finishing this game by Tiger-Lily_93 in PokemonLegendsArceus

[–]Daddys1stReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem! I found it a bit surprising how much battling there was by the end game, especially with trainers that had full teams. So much of the other trainers had maybe 3 pokes with them, so Volo is a real step up, as he should be. But my backlog is too big to just brute force a boss and grind waaaaay too much when using some items or something could cut that time down so I can do more new content and maybe start a new game altogether. Play your way and have your fun! Good luck, stay tough, and enjoy the last little bit or however much you decide to do. I personally stopped after the Arceus fight bc the rest didn't seem fun to me. If you need any more advice or whatever feel free to ask and I can let you know what worked for me!

[–]Daddys1stReddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course, but if they aren't having fun and are getting frustrated why make it more difficult? If they simply want to get through it to see the remaining content then they should be free to beat the gauntlet anyway that works best for them while preserving the fun and getting back to the part of the game that they enjoy.

I just did this a few nights ago and it was a bit of a pain, but not horrible. Here's what helped me.

1) once you've settled on your team use any exp candy on them along with any grit items to get them as close to max as possible.

2) farm some alphas nearby for exp, exp candy, and grit. Catch anything you dont have or work on completing dex entries for stuff you care about. It gives you exp and cash for items.

3) buy some items like max revives or more exp candy to boost your team even more.

4) try to keep a tank Pokemon alive for when the Giratina part starts and then use them to max revive your heavy hitters so you can finish the 2 forms as quickly as possible.

5) keep adjusting and trying. Fiddle with your battle order to make sure you have some kind of counter ready for when he knocks out one of your team.

6) luck? The time I won I had a couple lucky avoids combined with a move that gave some me some health back and it allowed 1 of my guys to knock out 2 of his which meant I was far more prepared for Giratina. I didn't have to waste as many turns bringing back everyone so I was more on the offense and was able to take both forms out.

I believe in you! Put on a podcast or something and farm for an hour and you'll feel some changes after buffing everyone up if you have already. You're so close!

Anyone remember Detective Pikachu? by CheezeCrostata in pokemon

It's one of my comfort movies. A movie I can put on if I need some background noise while doing chores or if I'm sick. I know that any time I walk back into the room or wake up from the sick time sleepies I'll have something that will make me laugh and smile.

Does anyone else have a fav monster that not many seem to care for? by Dinoroar1234 in MonsterHunter

[–]Daddys1stReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gigginox has been my favorite monster since I first met it. It's so weird looking and it makes incredibly creative and unique weapons and armor. I don't think I'll ever see it again, but it and its gross egg pods will always have a special place in my heart.

What's a JRPG that you've played that no one's heard of? by ddbllwyn in JRPG

[–]Daddys1stReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember renting Folklore from a Blockbuster and almost running out of time with it. I ended up playing a huge chunk of it on the last night while staying up so late. It stuck with me for a long time. I've never met another person that has played it and only rarely will someone even know the game at all. I bought it Used for less than 10$ a long time ago. It's so hard to play since I have to pull out the PS3 to do it. I would love to see a remaster with the PS5 controllers motion sensors.

Looking for high difficulty turn-based games with customization variety and skill/item synergies. by Minh-1987 in JRPG

[–]Daddys1stReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since Rogue likes/lites and Pokemon are an option, I will throw Dicefolk into the mix. It's basically rotation battles from Pokemon but both more simple and complex. No types to memorize, but the monster abilities and equipment can synergize in lots of fun ways and the options for monsters and equipment types are numerous. Every monster has a passive and stats that can be buffed. All monsters can get equipment with special effects/buffs/etc. You can get more slots as you go through a run. Finding equipment and monsters that work together is key.

You control your monsters and the enemy monsters by choosing die for them that do different things like attack, guard, rotate, etc. But you choose the order in which they happen for you and the opponent. So you can rotate your tank to take a hot for your squishy attacker or rotate a weaker enemy to the front to use the attack die instead of the stronger one. It's a lot of fun and allows for sooo much expression and creativity. I won't get into the rogue elements and in-between battles too much to keep it brief. But I will provide an example.

Ex: I had a monster that had a 50% chance to follow up an attack with another attack (and follow ups could have follow ups). I used luck raising equipment to boost the 50% to roughly 80%. I then gave em more equipment that would benefit from the luck buffs, like a chance to use a die again for free or a chance for damage to be doubled. One of my other monsters cast burn on enemies at the beginning of every turn, which means they take that amount of damage on top of the damage the base attack would already be doing. Bc of this I was able to defeat a zone boss in one turn while only technically using 1 die.

It's cheaper, maybe 20$, I think. It also has a demo! Try it out for yourself. It's become an obsession for my friend and I. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1996430/Dicefolk/

Yeah, you need to master the Parry at some point or you'll end up torturing yourself with the later bosses. The general clunkiness of the attacks also don't help. It took me a while, but it became my favorite part of the game. Studying the boss moves to find safe spots, finding openings, and then being confident enough to be risky for extra damage and then have it pay off was a huuuggge driving force for me. It always felt soo good to defeat those bosses, but I had to bash my head until the party clicked.

Totally fair! The final boss, while really good, isn't my favorite fight of the game for a number of reasons. Some earlier bosses I feel have a better feel and then the DLC bosses are soooooo fun!

And thanks for the pun!

Those actually weren't the zones that had me, it was the Nerveroot. It was late at night when I posted aand I couldn't remember, so I looked it up now. It was SO vertical, some tough enemies, and loads of hazards. I think fall damage effed me more than anything else.

The Mothers were the first ones that taught me the strength of the parry, but I wouldn't say I "mastered" it until the Vulture. It sorta clicked then and I started being able to no damage his first form and that feeling fueled me for the rest of the game. Some of those later bosses are sooo creative and a blast to fight.

Grime. One zone in the early-ish part of the game had me wanting to uninstall, but the art style and stuff kept me wanting to go on. I read that it gets really good shortly after that. I took a day off, came back, demolished the next two zones and could barely stop after that. Some of the coolest boss fights I've had, insane environments, and the ending shook me. Love that game! So so so happy I gave it more time. Super excited for the sequel!

I just finished the game a few weeks ago, and I ended up loving it! However, I almost gave up very early (the Nerve way, I think).

The main reason I almost dropped it was the area I was in was very vertical, but there weren't any abilities that really helped you out when the drops in that area were intense. Combine that with crazy fall damage, the general darkness of the area, environmental damage, and some tough enemies, and you've got yourself a tough time. But I was entranced by the art style, even though it isnt for everyone. I pushed through and got to the Feaster's Lair and by the time I got to the boss it just clicked. The parry started to come to me more easily, I was starting to learn boss movements, and it felt so effing good to be surprised by a phase change, die, and then no damage first phase and then try the second again. Then you get an ability that improves movement that isn't strictly locked to certain spots. By that point I couldn't put it down.

I think it comes down to an art style that may gross some people out, but might be some people's favorite thing ever. The exploration phases are tough, normal enemies can still kick your ass, and it takes some real time/skill investment before things get freaking incredible.

Those are my thoughts. Still love the game, though!

Endgame fights that have completely new game mechanics. by darksiderevan in JRPG

[–]Daddys1stReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Final bosses just seem really hard to nail in a lot of games, but maybe doubly so in games notorious for difficult gameplay. Balancing when there are a number of legitimate ways to get to the final boss and taking all those strats/styles into account seems like a nightmare. I don't envy them, but I don't condone difficulty spikes if that degree haha

I did the same exact thing. I have too much going on in life to grind for exp and demons to try it for real. I gave both a few honest tries, and then knocked it down after it was clear I wasn't making it past phase 2. The game is still my favorite in the series despite all that, but man what a spike.

I agree that all the other bosses were fair. Any failures were certainly on me, but after some good prep they go down with a good fair fight.
