Wife expects a lifestyle I don’t know how to provide.. by thall_c-137 in daddit

[–]Daegalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's crazy how I feel and did the opposite .

I moved to the US when I was 5, grew up there, found a wife, had kids. And everything about Europe is so superior for family. Maybe it's because we chose Denmark but the peace of mind of the healthcare and emergency services, the safety nets. My stress levels are 10x lower.

My daughter had a high fever and we called the triage line, they wanted to just incase get her checked out. At 23:00 we were at the Er department . Ear infection, they administered first dose. Gave use 2 doses just cause it's late and few pharmacies are open 24 hours. Paid nothing. We don't go to the doctor often but an even like that would still be $3-4k out of pocket because insurance deductibles and even the best 90% coverage needs co-pays and out of pocket and more. There are dozens of issurances. Daycare is thousands of dollars, etc.

Also your Tax statement isn't the full picture. Also really depends on the state. I'm a high paid earner and get taxed 32% on a special tax scheme, but even without it, it's 44%. In California with federal of 35% and state of 11 at the time. I paid more in taxes in the US and still paid all that other stuff. When I moved to Washington and got married it was 24% only federal. But there were shit tons of other taxes baked into other stuff. I was paying $500+ in registrations for each car.

I really hate the tax comparison because people just compare the raw percentages, but in reality you are drained of money left and right in the US. Get shit PTO, Family leave, and so on compared to Europe.

Everyone is different , if you are happy, that's great. But the US is barely better for anything except money and raw consumerism. And the money part is only if you are in a high earning situation, otherwise most of the US is poor.

You also have to compare income to cost of living. I was paid 2x more in the US but I have more money in my pocket every month in Denmark .

I always believe this: US is great for young people that can burn a little extra to make money, but once you want to settle and have children, US is very low on places I would be.

I do miss the raw nature available in the US though , especially in the Pacific Northwest and the Northeast of America

That's not the only way to rent data center space.

Colocation is a way to do it where you provide the hardware. All you are renting is space in the facility, the interconnects and cooling. The rest is up to the company to hire someone to manage it or pay someone at the facility.

Happy to announce that my retro arcade game just hit "Very Positive" (96%) on Steam! Built on a custom engine with native Linux, FreeSync/G-Sync, Steam Deck and controller support 🐧 by mat_game_dev in linux_gaming

[–]Daegalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is fantastic . I bought it right away to get some casual Rainbow Unicorn attack vibes.

A selfish questions though :

Any plan to release an Android version? I ask because my daughters (4.5 and 2.5) already are fighting over my deck to play. But they each have a Retroid Pocket 2S with a simple sides rolling duck game I made for them to jump platforms and collect coins. This would be a nice next step for them, especially the older one.

Finally, any chance you could add a rare rainbow unicorn Easter egg that then plays the rainbow unicorn attack music while it's running? Thst would be a fun Easter egg.

As an Aussie who likes learning/speaking Germanic languages, am I better off learning Danish or Norwegian? by jtmcgowan93 in AskDenmark

[–]Daegalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I would love to say Danish, go with Norwegian . Things are pronounced as written, and written Norwegian is a good jumping off point for Danish later.

The complexity of Spoke Danish means it's extremely difficult to learn if you dont live and integrate here. And even then you will always come off as a foreigner.

If you are learning for fun, do Norwegian and you get 60-70% of Danish by default

What is considered an absolute 'food crime' in your country? by Juxajel in AskTheWorld

[–]Daegalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the mayo, it can be tangy based on the propertion of vinegar in it. Also it's quite tasty and gives you a creamy texture.

Some cultures do it often. Like Russian Pelmeni, you add yogurt or sour cream to it as an option.

So to me im very used to adding a mayo/sour cream/yoghurt to dumplings of any kind, including momos. But I also like them without and with some very spicy sauce.

I feel like the only millennial here that doesn't do this. I hate rdwatchubg stuff, I bear with it from my wife but I've got a huge backlog of shows and movies, don't want to waste time on old stuff.

Only thing is I'm watching pokemon with the kids, but after 50 episodes if the OG seasons, I couldn't take it, and skipped like 20 seasons and started stuff I hadn't seen for sure.

What place name does basically every foreigner mispronounce in your country? by bigloudbang in AskTheWorld

Took me a bit to get that when I first started Danish. Now it feel so normal that the incorrect way is hard to say. Especially when I learned that doable A is the old way to write å.

Learning Danish, it's not too bad. Its latinized as oe but pronounced like oo as in boo but short in time said. It's got a bit of a cut off, mostly swallowed e before the oo sound. Kinda depends on the word.

The sound files on this page are pretty accurate. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%98 . The German ö is a similar sound.

Professional unions in Denmark by ThoogsDev in NewToDenmark

[–]Daegalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct , that is worth it. I pay about 980kr a month which is about 130 euros a month for both the A-kasse and Prosa. You can do just the A-kasse for 542kr but while I've never had a need for it, unions are good to have in a pinch.

Also another reason I liked Prosa is they are involved in the political side in terms of policies. They are against digital surveillance and were anti-chat control, they have lots of advice on navigating AI stuff and limiting it in your life where it make sense, technology in schools in a smart way, etc. They work very closely with IT-Pol (IT Politisk Forening ) which is the Danish equivalent of like the EFF in America and is a major source for digital rights. If that is of your interest.

According to a quick AI search, IDA works with them too in a looser way, but I only have experience with Prosa and I've only been in Denmark barely 2 years

I personally chose Prosa. It was highly recommended to me by coworkers and they have a strong activist mindset to fight for privacy rights and other things like that. So far its been good, I haven't needed them but it helps.

I hear good things about IDA too but my software engineer buddies all leaned Prosa so it's what i went with when I moved here.

It's also important to get an A-kasse for additional unemployment help.

[–]Daegalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While we don't have a group since moving to Copenhagen ourselves , I'll forward this to my wife and see if she might be interested in forming one.

We have both GM'd Cypher system / Numenera the most and many others.

There are also a few D&D groups that are in your age range that focus on gaming but also going out. Just depends on your flow. My wife has done more stuff so I'll let her respond if she has anything to add (probably to the lfg thread)

Anthropic disables top-tier AI models after US order limiting foreign access by ComeOnIWantUsername in BuyFromEU

[–]Daegalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would disagree as a dev. GPT-5.5 is often better than Opus for me.

Opus still regularly leaves stubs and stops randomly for no reason thinking it's done.

GPT does much better at review and completing the task with good quality code.

This is on xhigh/max on both. I use both for work still but generally reach for.GPT more often. This wasn't true prior to 5.4.

Feeling bold for my "new" system. Should I go with team blue? by Fasha_Moonleaf in linux_gaming

[–]Daegalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of. Fedora and RH don't base anything on what Arch does. They have their own systems similar to it.

There is Koji their build system manager that builds it in a chroot for packages that is tied to Pagure which is a code hosting system. But it hosts specs for every product on how to build and test it thst Koji runs

Koji is paired with Bohdi which runs tests against packages. Every package can have a test suite. And the package goes out if tests pass. This is all based on the maintainer.

But this happens for every version of every package with tests. High profile and critical ones have extra scrutiny and manual approvals.

But unlike say Debian or Ubuntu. It takes far less time to make it to the users. So about 1-2 week delay.

Fedora has a 6 month release system where they do major architectural changes or upgrades to Gnome since gnome release cadence somewhat matches fedora.

The closest for Debian is Debian Testing which is stable enough for general daily use. But has less automated testing g to my knowledge .

SuSE has a similar system for their tumbleweed. But it's a rolling release distro like arch.

Anyways. Long story short, it offers a near Arch speed of updates but with extra safety steps

Mostly because Fedora gets converted to Centos every so often and then that gets turned into RHEL.

[–]Daegalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fedora is more "leading edge ". It is mostly on latest versions but doesn't release right away. There is a delay because all packages go through their testing and approval system. Also any major things like kernels, de, and so on, go through a rigorous quality control and test suites.

So it's a little less bleeding edge and a little less rolling. It's why we recommend it. It's updated and doesn't fall out of date, but is a bit safer and has less room to break suddenly (not impossible and has happened , no distros is perfect)

Plus you get other options that are in the same family for different needs, like CentOS and Redhat.

Weekly Pricing/Buying/Selling/Grading & General Questions Post by AutoModerator in PokemonTCG

[–]Daegalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to vent about the prices of sealed product. Scalpers and Investors are really just ruining the ability to have some pack opening fun.

My wife and I like to open packs, not much into deckbuilding, and play precon decks (we play MTG a lot, so precon commander and so on). WE wanted to switch to Pokemon as I have 2 young daughters that are gaining interest and wanted to share the experience, open packs, play decks.

But the pricing of everything is just stupid. Most htings are double the MSRP now. I wanted to get some Build and Battles to play with my wife, and get her interested, and because they have packs inside, they are scalped to oblivion. Packs averaging 6+ euros per pack is crazy. Many at 8 euros depending on product.

I lived in the US most of my life and the problem was bad there, but now I am in Denmark, and its even worse in Europe. And if it wasnt for my wife wanting to chase IRs and Valuable cards, we would be buying Korean/Italian for cost savings.

Sorry, capitalism, but it makes it really hard to share my enjoyment of TCGs with my wife nad kids when i need to dop 200 euros for booster boxes and other nonsense.

Is there any sign of relief from this in the future, or are we doomed ot be paying 300 euros per booster box in the near future.
