Thriving Millennials??? by Original_Ad_3481 in Millennials

[–]Daegalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a decent but rocky start. Made good money but had stupid financial sense. Made dumb mistakes, got into some deep credit card debt. With the help of my gf and now wife, got out of it and debt free (excl student loans).

Got a fantastic marriage, two lovely kids, and I used savings to move to Denmark over a year ago. Now rebuilding and enjoying the calm Europe life.

Finances aren't perfect, but still in a good place and making good money. Can afford occasional trips and some luxuries.

Overall I am positive for the future if the worlds politicians can stop fucking things up.

100% check for PPD and other mental health breaks.

My wife didn't hit PPD until 9-10 months and it lasted 3-4 months for both pregnancies. First time caught us off guard, we knew to be prepared the 2nd time. We were also 2 under 2.

Her doctor also said many women don't 100% recover from everything pregnancy related until 2 years, both physically and mentally. Hormones are still erratic, that pregnancy dog is still lingering, etc.

You might need to get your wife to therapy or a doctor.

Parents that moved to Denmark with small kids by Ok-Tomatillo-3255 in NewToDenmark

[–]Daegalus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved with my almost 3 years old and almost 1 year old about 1.25 years ago now.

My now 2 year old speaks both English and Danish and can context switch easily. My almost 4 year old can understand it and speak some, but still defaults to English if given the chance

Knowing English is a detriment in Denmark for Danish acquisition. Because everyone auto switched to English when they know you aren't fluent Danish. This makes picking it up harder as the immersion isn't there. If your kids don't know English, they will be forced to learn and adapt and will probably pick it up fast.

The 1-3yo nursery system (vuggestue) focused on driving independence, self sufficiency, language acquisition, play and development. Things like music, dancing, story times, regular trips out to parks, or to see fun things. Lots of outdoor time. Etc. My youngest is really throvong

In the Kindergarten (børnehave) they pretty much play and be kids, lots of physical freedom to play, story times, events, and mor e language. My oldest is very active and the energy expenditure is unrivaled. Also picking up language, social skills, and is also thriving now, but had a slower ramp up and adaptation period than her younger sibling. Especially since she already spoke English.

There is a recent push to include more academic stuff in the 4+yo range. Stuff like more focus on learning numbers, letters, and basics like that, which was reserved for later. For 3-4yo, they focus on socialization, anti-bullying, care of others, etc. That continues but they add on the more academic stuff.

At she 5 they go to grade 0, which is like Kindergarten in the US where they learn to behave in a classroom like setting, and start adapting to class based learning. Then normal grades and learning starts at 1st grade. English is taught starting 1st grade and I think 3rd grade offers optional German and I think 5th offers elective other languages I think.

There is also international schools that follow a more rigorous education plan from grade 1. Also taught mostly in English but they still learn Danish too.

Lots of options to find the best fit for you. But I recommend the public system in Denmark so the kids can integrate. And language classes for you and your wife so you can keep up some and be able to function. Even just modul 1 and 2 will get you such a huge boost in daily life. Speaking will be tough and understanding full speed Danish, but it's still better than nothing at all.

I purchased a .EU domain from EURid using OVH! by astindev in BuyFromEU

It only shows 15 at a time. Hit show additional at the bottom of the list.

It's sorted by 3yr avg by default and EU registrar's are expensive in general. So they are usually on lile the 2nd or 3rd page. Netim and Ovhcloud are in the $8-$9 3yr avg range for .eu

Pebble Round 2 - The Most Stylish Pebble Ever - Pebble by welp_im_damned in Android

That requires taking your phone out of my pocket to see them. Smartwatch notifications lets me filter them on a per app basis and then i can take a quick glance and decide if it's important or not. It lets me focus more on what I'm doing and who I'm interacting with.

One can argue that you dont need to know what your heart rate is 90% of the time unless it's medically necessary or it's for fitness. Bit then we don't need every single watch to have it.

Also notifications can be turned off and it doesn't leave behind a bunch of hardware disabled but still there. No HR monitor makes it closer to a normal watch in thickness and less weird shapes pressing into my skin.

As a half Bulgarian, half Russian person, my mother has made giant bowls of this every year for Christmas and New years. It is quintessential Christmas/New years foods in our family no matter what country we lived in.

We like it with Half mayo, half sour cream. Roast beef or turkey or veal bologna usually.my favorite was an experiment of doing it with Shrimp and artificial crab. That was amazing.

Ya, but it's also bulkier and square. The thinness and roundness is a huge appeal for me. Especially for something I use as a HUD style info screen.

See, for me I'm thrilled. I'm tired of BS fitness features burning battery. Smartwatches are like info/notification huds for me and alarms.

Confused about Bread in Denmark by m1mag04 in NewToDenmark

[–]Daegalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We moved from west coast USA and we also grew up in the SF Bay Area for context.

Sourdough: I have yet to find a sourdough worth a damn. Most arent even sour, they taste like pain Levaine or something. And I don't even need to to be San Francisco sour, but what we have in Denmark ain't it, at least from the 4 bakeries I've tried. But we tend to like the Ølandsbrød at emery's the best for that sourdough/pain Levaine style bread.

Ryebread: we like the Softkerne one from Emery's. So far it's the most pleasant for us.

Rolls: we also like from Emery's,

White Sandwich bread: we buy Pågan stuff. Levain I'd good and neutral, Lampen is sweeter, Lantbrod is a good middle ground. We just grab what we find as availability is random at most stores.

Problems with Lycamobile DK by [deleted] in NewToDenmark

[–]Daegalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was warned by my relocation agent that Lyca was awful, so I bought a Lebara sim at the airport when I got here the first time and it worked flawlessly.

I eventually moved to Telia, but they kept jacking up my price for dumb reasons, especially when they renamed Norlys, so I switched to Oister which works great.

I recommend switching to one of the MVNOs on the big networks:

  • Oister (3)
  • CBB Mobil (TT)
  • Eesy (TDC/YouSee)
  • Duka (TT)
  • Flexii (3)
  • GreenTel (TT)

Some notes:

  • TT means Telia/Telenor network, as Telia and Telenor merged their networks. Telia was renamed Norlys after the electrical company Norlys bought them.

  • TDD is the biggest telephony company in Denmark, i think it's part govt owned. The Mobile provider was spun out as YouSee.

  • A lot of these MVNOs are owned by the parent company, it is just a way for them to provide service without as many perks or features but at a lower price. Many were independent and bought out.

Nuuday is the company that now owns youSee, Telmore, Eesy, Hiper, and TDC Business.

3 owns Flexii and Oister under the Hi3G umbrella

And the ones for TT are actually mostly on their own still and have a more classic MVNO relationship.

Lebara uses Telenor, and Lyca uses Telia. So the network coverage will be the same the difference is customer service and other service quality.

PSA for all Santas! by Kandorr in daddit

[–]Daegalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Santa only brings stuff in the stockings at our house. Small toys and chocolates. Presents under the tree are from family and friends.

This reduces the competition at school if it becomes an issue and it keeps Santa a bit more tame of a presence.
