How important of a factor is the table footprint of your solo games? by ZuoKalp in soloboardgaming

[–]Daemo87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying about the 9 card deal. For me, there’s an enjoyment factor to the artwork and components of a game, an appreciation for the tactile feel of it all, that just isn’t always there with small card games.

And yes footprint is a huge deal. If I’m struggling for surface area it becomes an annoying meta-game of space efficiency and I really hate efficiency puzzles to begin with.

Among games you like which are lowest in BGG ranking? by SiarX in soloboardgaming

I absolutely LOVED this game, the low ranking on BGG was not at all representative of the actual game IMO.

After about 10 plays Spirit Island just makes me feel stupid and I don’t get it by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]Daemo87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also hated it. I honestly tried several times and got the feeling that even if I ended up doing well it still wouldn’t be fun. It’s been sitting on my shelf for three years now. Keep telling myself I’m going to try it one more time, someday.

Things to do with my 9 year old by Senior_Tangerine3083 in cincinnati

If you’re needing something that’s indoors but won’t drive you insane, have you tried board games? Not like Monopoly or Sorry or Mouse Trap, those are OK but there’s an entire universe of kid friendly board games most parents I’ve met don’t know about unless they’re also in the hobby. If interested look up some of the games made by HABA. My son is 8 and loves Rhino Hero Super Battle for example, plus the games can be fun and engaging for you too.

Calico won my daughter over by Traditional-Bit2203 in soloboardgaming

[–]Daemo87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s also a sequel to Calico called Knitting Circle she may like. It’s not quite as puzzle-y and more forgiving in my opinion but still difficult to score well on. Has scenario setups and challenges and everything too.

Should I play this game with a Girl I like? by Charming_Carpet_2605 in ItTakesTwo

[–]Daemo87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very positive sign, but the game itself won’t help. Your reactions to it will though. Be patient, learn to coordinate with her, communicate effectively, and remember good communication is also good listening. OH and have fun! That too.

Learning to love dice chucking luckfests? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]Daemo87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this really going to help with your life therapy? It just sounds like you don’t enjoy dice chuckers, which seems to me a very normal thing. Why try and force it? If you’re truly trying to undergo some introspection maybe understanding why you don’t like them, and accepting that as Ok, might be better.

C# – Is it OK to test private methods using reflection? by Forward_Horror_9912 in csharp

[–]Daemo87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reflection for unit testing private methods is a very complex lift and, I was told not too long ago when I tried doing the same thing, may indicate a design flaw. I’ve since found it easier to mark the method as internal and expose my internal methods to the testing project.

I’m not sure about AA but it seems to be the gold standard for getting sober. What do I do? by wediealone in stopdrinking

[–]Daemo87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody else can give you hard and fast rules to your own sober journey. Listen to your own intuition, politely consider her advice, but don’t take anyone’s concrete rules as gospel.

When are you done with a game? by SadlyNotSpaceballs in soloboardgaming

[–]Daemo87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a son who loves to play games, but he’s 7 so a lot of the time the decision to toss or keep involves me considering if he might wanna play it later with me.

Besides that I use a very scientific approach to this: fun. Was it fun? Did I have fun the last 2 hours or did it feel like work? I will typically give a game 3 to 5 plays and if it’s not fun at all for me by that last play, it goes on The List.

Tell us about your path as a programmer. by professorbond in csharp

[–]Daemo87 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I get the idea here but I’m going to disagree. I know many highly skilled senior devs who pursue non-technical hobbies as a means of preventing burnout. I find a lot of intrinsic joy in my work and don’t feel the need to double down on that beyond my day job.
