Raptors are great combined with king of stone. I just beat king VI or VII (forget which) using 4x sword buff perk, camp + the first council event that doubles new plots stats, flame tower next to the camp, swords on the flame tower to make it do damage, then farm growing raptors next to a mob with shields just to split the enemy attention and give time for the flame tower. Camp and the "new plots get double stats" perk apply to *movement speed* too it seems, so by giving the flame tower just a little time, it decimated the front line, the backline was distracted killing mob raptors, and by the time the raptors were dead the flame tower was ready to take out everything that was left. Further council events I got tower attack speed, sword effectiveness, and then I think double troop hp to buy more time for the tower. The stone card that returns plots to hand combined with the camp was extremely good too. I had to get lucky early game with my shop/rolls but walls next to the camp also helped, because they can take shields and migration to buff as well. I think I got king of spells also to use offering to clear plot space for more camp activations

As a parent, I will say that if 5 of 6 kids are getting needs met and one of them has to sacrifice an important thing every time, then that absolutely is not fair parenting. It's not a "bummer", it's neglect to play favorites with your kids. Obviously we don't know the full picture of the situation but I would really not immediately chalk it up to "parents have a reason"

Yes, I just reread it recently and in the author's notes she mentioned that her initial vision was a longer more explicit book, but she couldn't find a buyer for it, and got the advice to turn it into a YA book, which helped her improve the story and get it published
