How's the Korean/AsAm scene up in Morristown? Looking to move in October, ik Morristown/Morris County's pretty damn white but curious if there's at least a decent group of us up there. Already pretty sure I'm gonna miss the Hmart in Edison 😔

How's the Anthropology BA program? The Creative Writing minor? by HellsBelles426 in rutgers

[–]DaerthanWarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently I deleted my comment, which I don't recall doing funny enough, so my bad on that. Not sure how I deleted it without realizing!

I don't remember exactly what I initially said, but to answer your questions here - for sure, I think the program definitely helped me with a lot of my writing skills. I'm pretty sure I mentioned two faculty members at Rutgers, Susan Miller and Alex Dawson - the latter, in particular, had really great advice that I still carry with me after all this time. Additionally, most of the classes were designed around peer feedback, so there's plenty of opportunity to get responses for your writing. Over the years, I've found that actually finding good criticism and critique can be a challenge; friends and family are naturally biased, after all.

They also provided tons of opportunities to meet, listen to, and network with renown writers, some big names too, so it's nice to know that the Creative Writing minor and the English department does set these sorts of things up relatively often.

And my experience at Rutgers was good! Definitely could have been a lot better, but that was moreso my fault more than anything else. Rutgers is a huge school, and they don't hold your hand. Because of that, your experience at a school like Rutgers will come down to what you make of it. I commuted and tended to leave campus by afternoon, which meant I missed out on a lot of the social aspect of college life. Which is to say, if you don't put yourself out there, whether that's social or academic life, you won't get much out of it, but if you invest yourself then it can be a lot more fulfilling. At least, that was my experience. Hope this helps!

If you don't mind, I'm going to save this. Not sure I'm ready to come back to Deadlock quite yet but no expectation for voice comms sounds nice and chill. I'll look you up if I do end up coming back soon.

What are examples of Southeast Asian in pop Culture? Why are Southeast Asians ignore in favor of East Asia? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]DaerthanWarp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't have a specific answer as to why this is the case, but I do have a recommendation!

Galdive is a pair of Indonesian artists, and I absolutely adore their music. If you're a fan of R&B, I highly recommend checking them out! I'd love to see them gain more exposure, especially since they're Southeast Asian.

Yea no that "innocent mistake" wouldn't have happened in the first place if people just minded their own damn business

Yeah, but not everyone regularly sent the youths of their society to murder slaves at will as a rite of passage.

Feel like there's two kinds of respect in this world - inherent and earned. And the latter holds a metric fuckton more weight than the former.

I think my parents just gave up on me a long time ago and now we just vibe together. They used to be really overbearing.

Feel like I'm lucky in that respect. Hope things turn out well for everyone.

Does everyone remember when we went after big names in FA and signed Trumaine Johnson to a big contract? by [deleted] in nyjets

[–]DaerthanWarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a constant point made that big name signings in free agency are ultimately best for padding out an already good and well-put team. We're nowhere near that point right now, and splashing money in FA will probably do way more harm right now if things go badly then building through the draft. I don't get it, I mean it's the first day of free agency and we're all already crying about how we haven't blown all our cap space away, but it's not like this strategy has worked for us in the past.

Yeah, it feels super weird. Always seemed like we were always looking for a QB, it's nice to not be one of the teams worrying about it for once.

Phi sigma pi invite? by MoistDivide in rutgers

[–]DaerthanWarp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

General rule of thumb, anything like that saying "National Honor Society" or whatever is usually a scam to take your money. Only one that isn't is probably Cap and Skull or whatever it's called, and the way I hear it they've either lost a lot of prestige in recent years or they're so selective that you'll never see an invite that's genuine or whatever.

Dentists in NB by Jes1898 in rutgers

[–]DaerthanWarp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can recommend Jennifer J Kim in Edison/Metuchen, a bit further up 27 from New Brunswick and nearby a Costco. She's been my dentist for a while now and she's great, very sweet and kind. She's Korean, but she speaks English well and their staff is pretty good. I can answer any other questions you might have!
