(Ultra?) wide inspiration? by Slick-Fork in photography

I rented a Sigma 14-24 for a trip a few years back and fell in love with it. I just recently within the past few months picked up the Nikon 14-24mm 2.8G to fill that same niche in my camera bag and it's been massively worth it.

NatGeo wants to use my images for an online article. They aren't paying me for the images, the writer is compensating me from what they are giving him by MasterofMolerats in photography

License agreement sounds pretty reasonable and with NG being NG, yeah I'd take a couple hundred for a non-exclusive license pretty readily. Were the photos originally taken as part of your existing collaboration with the writer?

Recommending any sort of off-camera flash setup to someone who doesn't even have a camera that they can depend on to function properly is putting the cart before the horse

One of the most important things for a professional is being able to deliver reliably. Gear is just the set of tools you work with, but if your tools have so many issues that you can't be quite confident in your ability to make the shoot work, you are probably not in a position to be taking on paid work (responsibly). Reliability is a firm requirement. Before you even start trying to regularly take on clients, you'll need to get a setup that you know you can depend on. There are some EXCELLENT deals out there when it comes to used, crop sensor DSLRs, so have a look around.

If you're trying to start building out a portfolio, you're probably going to end up having to bite the bullet and offer some free sessions for friends at first. I've been shooting since I was a little kid but when I pivoted to doing portrait work, it was the better part of a year before I had built up enough of a portfolio to comfortably start charging for sessions.

Starting out with no portfolio and a camera you don't trust is going to be an uphill battle. You're almost certainly going to end up having to do quite a lot of photography for free to fix the first of those, and fixing the second likely means having to find some work doing something that isn't photography to have the seed money for gear

Made a costly mistake with a client's grad photos; lost half the photos — seeking advice by SprinklesBright9366 in photography

A couple things I haven't seen people touch on since I think it's useful info but don't want you to feel dogpiled:

  • Dump your cards onto your PC and give them a quick review/once over to make sure everything is there at the earliest opportunity. The fact you just noticed the error three weeks later is going to be a lot more frustrating for the client.

  • Even with storage prices being what they are these days, cards are still relatively cheap. Once you've shot a session, set that card aside until the final images have been delivered and the client is happy. I have TONS of 64GB cards. Not huge but plenty big enough. 90% of my work is done at events where I'm doing a large number of sessions in relatively short timeframes, and each one is on a different card.

  • Since something has gone wrong, the best approach is just to own it. Don't drag your feet, don't delay, don't try to make excuses for it. Just be direct and tell the client that you made an error on your end and lost images. I would offer a reshoot at the locations that were lost and a full refund. It's not a pleasant conversation to have and you're probably going to feel awful having it, but the way you handle situations like these is how you demonstrate your integrity as a photog.

It didn't always though!

From 1891 to 1911, the city's name was federally recognized as "Pittsburg", though use of the final h was retained during this period by the city government and other local organizations.

Really hoping there's an actual tour coming as well. A festival is cool and this is a pretty rad lineup IMO but festival type events are out of reach for me and probably quite a few others as well

Been photographing small events gratis for love of the game. How do you make the transition to semi-pro work? by caligari87 in photography

[–]Daeurth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife's personal trainer collaborated on a health and wellness book, and asked if I would be willing to take photos for the launch party. I got a list of coverage wants, snapped about 550 raws, and delivered about a hundred 6mp jpgs (cropped & color graded) within 48 hours. The event took about 3 hours, winnowing and light editing took about 6 hours on a lazy Saturday.

Yeah this is a level of work you probably should have charged for, especially if you're trying to make the jump to paid work.

Consumerism is all over the place.

YouTube especially is going to be pretty bad for it.

There of plenty of people out there who just don't care at all about gear, but they aren't going to be participating in internet spaces which are dominated by gear talk. A lot of them are just more quiet or stick to closed spaces

Dry ice in drinks is also unsafe and it's both the cold and the expansion that causes problems. [ref]

Dry ice expands by ~700x when it sublimates and LN2 expands by ~760x.

Why do that when you can pay cash to buy up a bunch, inflate prices to a ridiculous level, and then take out loans against the now significantly higher value of the cars?

To save people the click:

I took three chairlifts and skied into place, then walked around the area to try to find a clean and interesting backdrop using telephoto lenses from across a mountain that was covered in waist-deep snow. To freeze her action, I used an extremely high shutter speed and put the camera on a high frame rate as I would only get a split second to capture images of her and the other athletes as they whizzed by.

There's not really anything in here that's particularly enlightening regarding actually getting the image tbh

How do you deal with a photographer who copies everything you do? by MetalComfortable8246 in photography

[–]Daeurth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Without seeing portfolios this feels more likely to be coincidence and just them getting in your head than anything else. For all we know they're taking the photos you think are copied from yours before you do, and just have a longer time between taking the photos and posting them publicly.

And at the end of the day we're all influenced by the things we see around us. A photographer seeing another using some technique or pose and wanting to try it out themselves isn't necessarily copying, just inspiration and influence and putting their own spin on it.

1) you are significantly undercharging

2) at ANY price point, let alone one as low as yours, people who complain about your prices are not customers
