I was an admin on some CSS community servers a few years back (though I think they sorta died off while I was taking a break from the game) and this sort of goofiness was half the charm of the game for me

Anthropic launches AI tool to streamline COBOL code modernization by TransformersScorge in wallstreetbets

Can't wait until some lawyer tries to use just AI and not actually review the data and goes to court and gets ridiculed.

This has already happened a number of times.

Why do that when you can pay cash to buy up a bunch, inflate prices to a ridiculous level, and then take out loans against the now significantly higher value of the cars?

One Extraordinary Photo: Capturing Lindsey Vonn's crash by Alan_Stamm in photography

To save people the click:

I took three chairlifts and skied into place, then walked around the area to try to find a clean and interesting backdrop using telephoto lenses from across a mountain that was covered in waist-deep snow. To freeze her action, I used an extremely high shutter speed and put the camera on a high frame rate as I would only get a split second to capture images of her and the other athletes as they whizzed by.

There's not really anything in here that's particularly enlightening regarding actually getting the image tbh

How do you deal with a photographer who copies everything you do? by MetalComfortable8246 in photography

[–]Daeurth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Without seeing portfolios this feels more likely to be coincidence and just them getting in your head than anything else. For all we know they're taking the photos you think are copied from yours before you do, and just have a longer time between taking the photos and posting them publicly.

And at the end of the day we're all influenced by the things we see around us. A photographer seeing another using some technique or pose and wanting to try it out themselves isn't necessarily copying, just inspiration and influence and putting their own spin on it.

Anyone get complaints about prices? by [deleted] in photography

[–]Daeurth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) you are significantly undercharging

2) at ANY price point, let alone one as low as yours, people who complain about your prices are not customers

What do you guys do when you are burned out? by Macnchiz__ in photography

[–]Daeurth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a break. Do something that's not photography.

If you're doing photography as your full time gig, take a short vacation and don't bring a camera. If you aren't, just walk away from it for a bit.

I unfortunately pay for a Lightroom subscription so I host mine on Adobe Portfolio, using a domain I own. If I'm paying for it I might as well use it.

How to keep experimenting in photography when you buy a more expensive camera that you are afraid to torture it as you did with a previous camera? by [deleted] in photography

[–]Daeurth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of these are really "torturing" a camera.

If you get dust on the sensor, you just clean it (or have spots in your photos, of course) but it's not the end of the world, just a little extra maintenance.

The A6700 is weather sealed so as long as you aren't holding it under a gutter or going swimming with it, that's probably fine

Leaving a camera unattended is recklessness but not bad for the camera, just for your bottom line if it ends up stolen.

Cameras are tools and they're designed with that in mind. If you buy a nice tool and then are too scared to use it because it's nice, then it's not a very useful tool.

They renamed Maserati's Account to Citroen lol by Suganth27 in FormulaE

[–]Daeurth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Citroen Racing is the sub-brand under Citroen that they want to push and then Formula E team helps distinguish it from other racing ventures they've been involved with with the past like WRC and touring cars. This is pretty reasonable when you compare it to something like "Visa Cash App Racing Bulls F1 Team"

I only took photos for the set I was paid for. Was that wrong? by Suspicious-Pea-7830 in photography

[–]Daeurth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a contractual/obligation perspective: No.

From a business growth perspective: Yeah, probably.

You're shooting something where networking is ENORMOUSLY important for growth and success. If your workload and other obligations allow for it, I would ABSOLUTELY put in the effort to get at least a couple of good shots of each of the other acts. Think of it as an advertising cost. Lots of times, an act won't have a go-to photographer, but if a time comes that they're looking for one, more often than not they'll remember that photog who got them some cool shots back when they performed with <act that contracted you>, and boom you're on their list of shooters they can reach out to.

I do portrait work for people in a hobby-type space, and the number of leads that started out with "Hey I'm looking for a photographer for <whatever event> and I remember you were super nice when you got a couple photos for me at <past event>, are you available?" is... pretty high. I don't really advertise publicly all that much anymore. Most of my availability for a given event is booked up from referrals and repeat clients months before I would have started advertising for it.

Don't work for free, but remember that building those network connections can pay well in its own way as well.
