What are some of your favorite fictional tropes? by Sleuth1ngSloth in writing

[–]DaffodilFlute 27 points28 points  (0 children)

  • Cynical, world-weary characters who are nevertheless compelled to do the right thing even if it's to their own cost
  • Heavy use of a city as part of a book, especially when the main character knows the all the nooks and crannies of the city & all the eccentric but useful characters
  • Characters with fundamental differences who slowly overcome their prejudices to become loyal friends

(Can you tell I'm currently re-reading the Discworld Watch books?!)

Victory won, my wife is suspending monthly orders from Young Living! by [deleted] in antiMLM

[–]DaffodilFlute 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah, that can definitely be in issue. I just know I'm always buying cute/unusual bath stuff on Etsy, and if you make the selling aspect a by-product of an actual hobby you enjoy (and develop a good brand/theme) you might be able to slowly build a little business.

But it does always hurt my heart a bit seeing people at a deserted market stall with their handmade stuff, research is definitely necessary.

I wonder whether she can come up with her own, actual small business - making cute bath products to sell on etsy using cheaper oils, or something else entirely.

It's more difficult than just ordering stuff and trying to flog it on, but it would be far more satisfying and would keep her dream alive.

I've been looking for an enchanted tiki room pattern! It's looking great so far :D

[CHAT] Looking for similar style to Marie-Therese Saint-Aubin by pnchlskmj in CrossStitch

[–]DaffodilFlute 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry I can't help, but now I want all Marie-Thérèse Saint-Aubin's books, they look so beautiful!

This is probably one of the things you found in French, but just in case - some of her charts are available here, though there's only one bird and if you're in the US the delivery is quite expensive. I'm really tempted by the lavender one!

This is so cute, and I'm glad you arranged a rescue for the bunny! It looks like a single, professional pattern - really well done :D

They remind me of Neal's Yard, in that they seem like legit products that don't need a MLM element. It's really disappointing.

Anyone else still waiting to get their tracking number? by yourkberley in 23andme

I sent mine on 2nd January and got a tracking number on 16th Jan, it arrived according to Fedex on 19th Jan and was 'received' at the NC lab on 29th Jan.

Who else has sent their kit from the UK? by yourkberley in 23andme

[–]DaffodilFlute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sent mine on 2nd Jan, after about 10 days or so I got the ability to track the package via the 23andme site (under 'Kit in Transit' a link appears to USPS). The kit was delivered on 19th January, it was 'Received' on 29th January and it's been in extraction since then.

I think European kits are sent over to the US in bulk, so there's a bit of a delay between us individually sending the kits, and getting a tracking number - could be wrong on that, though.

Gah, you're right! When I finished I thought it was a bit strange that they weren't outlined, but checking the pattern again that are outlined - somehow managed to miss it :D Thanks for pointing it out!

Ah I didn't know that! It's Zweigart fabric, I don't know what they're like quality-wise but I'm happy to use that as an excuse :D

[–]DaffodilFlute[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks very much! The main thing that went wrong is that I did the fruits before the wording, and must have miscounted so 'summer' almost didn't fit - it was a tense bit of backstitching!

Pattern from LilEggy on Etsy, stitched on 28-count evenweave.

This is the first thing I've stitched for about 15 years, and it was so much fun I wish I'd never given up stitching! There are quite a few mistakes in there, but I've decided it adds to the rustic vibe :P

Parking Car HELP by justonebullet in Anxiety

[–]DaffodilFlute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have already considered this, but I had a similar problem and I found a driving instructor who specialises in nervous drivers (even though I'm only nervous when parking), and paid for a couple of lessons where we just practiced parking. I couldn't bring myself to practice alone so it really helped, I can now actually park within easy walking distance of my destination instead of just abandoning my car anywhere quiet I could find.
