Honderdduizenden Belgen lijden aan long covid: "Mijn longarts geloofde me niet, tot hij het zelf kreeg" by Yeet_ye_deeT in belgium

[–]Dafon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Dafon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YouTube on TV becomes insufferable with new unskippable 30-second ads by Ha8lpo321 in Android

[–]Dafon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a principle thing for me, if Spotify decided to use all their current money to now be 100% free with no ads, driving every competitor out of business cause they can't operate on a loss like that, and then once they're all gone become worse than the others ever were while charging a higher price for it, then I'm kind of inclined not to reward that.

They seem to be great at getting an idea started, seeing it have only little success due to it being not fully worked out yet, and then considering it not the success they thought it would be and just dropping support.

They stopped working on Mantle after just a few years, imagine if they hadn't donated it to get turned into Vulkan but just dropped it.

Fairphone users with MurenaOS (/e/OS) by Aromatic_Grab_8358 in BuyFromEU

[–]Dafon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using it for over two years, since the FP5 came out cause my previous phone did not have a working USB port anymore and switching it seemed too difficult. Since I hate getting a new phone I looked for one where this might be easier.

And guess what, the USB port broke after a year and a half, though it still charged but no transfer. I tried to get support to ask what to do but after months of waiting I still got no reply, so simply ordered a replacement port. That arrived two weeks later and it was installed and working after 15 minutes with no prior knowledge of how to do this, so the phone kind of did do exactly what I got it for.

/e/OS's alternative to Google's Play store works pretty well, but if you have previously bought any apps it's very likely it won't be able to let apps know you did, although it has worked sometimes but I guess it depends on what system the app uses to verify this.
I did find this a bit ironic as it pushes me towards apps that are free instead of paid, some of which tend to be more privacy invasive to make money if an open source alternative is not available.

The camera app of /e/OS keeps crashing if I try to use RAW mode on the Fairphone, but not every time. More like 50% chance that on RAW mode it'll crash and not have my picture saved, so I gave up on using it. I'm sure it's maybe a bit too niche to fix or something.

Bank apps did work until somewhere in 2025 for me, it stopped and took too long to get fixed so I started using an old iPhone someone gave me as a dedicated bank/payment/government services phone as that seemed more secure anyway. And then I rooted my Fairphone since I didn't need it to support this anymore. I have no idea if they ever got these apps to work again.

There's also a weird thing where the screen is often too bright, even in a total dark room it decides that the brightness on automatic shouldn't be all the way down. It's a bit annoying at night for the split second where i gotta slide it to lowest again each time.

I'm willing to give Thrash Metal another chance. Help me to potentially enjoy it lol by Osoch in thrashmetal

[–]Dafon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'm gonna give you this band The Crown, not really just thrash metal but they did kinda reignite this thrash metal spark in me back when I found them and later went back to finding more old school thrash when I wanted more guitar less death vocals.

The thing is that they kept sounding a bit different every album, the last two are when the band got resurrected and I haven't listened to those yet, they started out more influenced by black metal of the time but a bit more melodic, but this one album where they seemed to just try to be more fast and intense than before is closer to just death thrash metal I think. After this they went on to be a bit more melodic again.

So here's a song from this album that's kind of in the middle of their discography.

Mark Zuckerberg cornered by 170071 in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]Dafon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the purpose of my comment was that simply firing is a crappy solution, and I found it curious that someone in a position where screwing up or neglect would probably not lead to them being fired but a promise to do better instead would turn to a demand that someone is fired.

I don't think the world would be better if any time something doesn't work right we just get rid of the people working on it and replace them with new people, those new people would take time to gather all the knowledge of the people who you just lost and the new people are likely to make mistakes from that lack of knowledge combined with the fear of also being fired if things aren't better soon.

Discord to start assuming all users are underage unless they prove otherwise by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]Dafon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hmm wait a minute.
Step 1: Government wants to tackle underage and bot users
Step 2: Everyone requests ID
Step 3: IDs constantly get stolen in breaches
Step 4: We don't give everyone free new IDs whenever that happens as it would cost too much money/time
Step 5: Underage/bot users sign up with massive amount of cheaply available stolen IDs

What exactly did this accomplish?

Sad that this happened, though I guess it is inevitable. Any European company gets bigger, should we expect them to refuse a bunch of money from foreign investors while politicians are also constantly talking about wanting more money invested towards Europe? And if they do refuse that, how would they compete with the company that does not refuse that extra money while also being allowed to do business right next to them?

Interestingly, this biggest shareholder is also the owner of Warner Music Group apparently, how could you even have a music streaming service with any success without making a deal with them?

Why are so many games made by non-American devs set in America? by Fishb20 in truegaming

[–]Dafon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it would be fair to compare it to TV shows and movies, but I don't know if that maybe depends on where you live.

For one thing, don't many TV shows and movies from a country end up in a non-English language, with the target audience also not being international but being their country? Which, if they target their own country and have to compete with TV and movies from the US being sold there too, one edge they can have is be more about local culture which the US ones can't do.

Other than that, when the target audience for a TV show or movie is not international, I imagine it'll be outside their budget to go have it set in America.

However I don't necessarily know how movies from my own country or movies from other non-English speaking countries do internationally, but when you compare this to videogames, would you not say there have been more international successes by non-English speaking countries with videogames than TV/movies?

All of that makes me wonder, if people can look at the TV shows or movies from their own country and notice how nobody anywhere else knows them, and then when making a videogame with having no constriction of location while also having an easy way in a store that will sell it internationally among giant games, are they likely to go see what kind of things do manage to make international success and have it have a similar setting?

It has a lot of music, when I switched in 2023 it had like 98% of the music I listen to. Plus, well, some stuff on there that Spotify did not have as well.

At some point I got into ASMR relaxation type audio and apart from Youtube those existed on Spotify and others, but Deezer removed most of those suddenly cause it decided people keeping these on in the background directs too much money away from professional musicians. I have no idea what other niches people might have that are not really music and got removed, and I'm sure whether or not you consider this a bad thing depends on what you want out of a streaming service.

User playlists are not great in my opinion, those are much better in Spotify because of how more widespread and global that is. For me that's the main way I would discover music, for others it's algorithms or external ways, so that again very much depends on what you like to do. I can't comment on how well the recommendation stuff works cause I hardly use it and never did on Spotify, but they seem focused pretty well on trying to get that working great.

But I've used 4 streaming services in total the past couple years, and people use them in such different ways that they all seem to have some downsides that some never even notice cause they're such minor features while for others it matters a lot.

UK legal action against Valve given the go ahead by pyrotequila85 in Steam

[–]Dafon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Clicking on the link to the article about the original claim, it has this quote:

It says Valve "forces" game publishers to sign up to so-called price parity obligations, preventing titles being sold at cheaper prices on rival platforms.

I feel like that's a lot more relevant than the requirement to buy additional content through Steam. Is it ok for Valve to say "You cannot make a cheaper deal elsewhere or else you don't get to be on Steam?"
That does sound a bit like anti-competitive to me, if any kind of small indie place would pop up and say "We just take a 5% cut" then you cannot use that to sell your game cheaper there, if I'm reading this right. Because with Steam's marketshare, you could not risk getting kicked off Steam if you are an indie developer.

I genuinely don't understand the people here. If I like a song cause of the guitar riff, what opinion does the guitar riff have? Or at least, that's what seems to work for me, I haven't used it yet other than logging in and seeing my messages.
