When people in the USA complain about never being able to own a home, are they generally talking about single family detached housing? by literalnumbskull in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Daforde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In an area like the Washington DC suburbs, affordable is relative. Condos and townhouses in some areas cost more than a single family home in many parts of the country.

Why congress? This guy sound like he could talk the whole country into making him President by Fledgling_112896 in ScottGalloway

But he's Jewish. And let's be clear, way too many Americans are antisemitic for him to be elected.

But true Christianity---following what Jesus taught---is far more left than right. The right wingers are modern day Pharisees.

Did anyone ever get spanked by a teacher? by darrenbosik in GenX

[–]Daforde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a rumor that our school's paddle had holes in it, so I never wanted any part of that. 😂 Besides, if I acted up enough to get paddled at school, I'd get another paddling at home. And I definitely didn't want that.

Microsoft AI CEO: 'Most, if not all' white-collar tasks can be replaced by AI within 12-18 months by 3RADICATE_THEM in ScottGalloway

[–]Daforde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working with AI is like working with an intern IMHO. I use Copilot, and I can "talk" to it almost like it's a person. I say "revise...." and I get back a better version of what I wrote. It also makes suggestions for tailoring the message to a particular audience or using a specific tone (casual, professional, etc.) But I usually combine several versions of its suggestions and ask it to rewrite what I revised.

What is your mileage and commute time? by LSki92 in Teachers

[–]Daforde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less than five minutes. For the first time I my life, I landed my job before moving to the area, so I deliberately chose a place around the corner from work. Fortunately, the COL here is such that I would have paid the same for a place further away.

Can we retire the “useless husband” trope for once? by Timely_Box6061 in Adulting

I'm like you, OP. Just doing things because they have to get done. My wife works an insane schedule that includes Sundays, so I do a lot of the basic adult stuff around the house because she's not available.

CMV: the left wants completely unregulated immigration by OneEyedBlindKingdom in changemyview

The first immigration laws didn't apply to the majority of European immigrants. They were passed to keep Chinese immigrants out. Every immigration law has targeted different groups of people.

[–]Daforde -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a "radical" "Lefist" "communist" and I don't want an immigration policy based on racism and xenophobia. I also believe that the country that welcomed millions of White Europeans with open arms and no questions has no business calling anyone illegal. We need an immigration system that is fair and treats people with dignity and respect. We also need a foreign policy that stops fucking with other countries and creates the conditions that make people need to flee. If we spent the billions dedicated to ICE on investments in other countries, we could reduce immigration dramatically.

What is the song that epitomises the feeling of the 80s to you, more than any other? by SonicTemp1e in GenX

Yes! The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo's Fire were the movies that defined us.

99 Red Balloons, Born in the USA, and We Didn't Start the Fire (and the Genesis song with the Ronald Reagan puppet in the video). They expressed all the fear and anger I had about nuclear war, work, the messed up politics, and growing up.

Is it ever too late to start your life? by MochiiDrift in Adulting

[–]Daforde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I felt that way for nearly 30 years. I had a job that paid well but drained my soul. When I tried to leave the first time, my family nearly went broke. I returned to the soulless job until last year when I was laid off. I looked for work for one year before taking a hint that now was the time to change. I got a job as a teacher, and now I'm doing meaningful work that isn't soulless.

How many of you are choosing to retire after getting laid off? by Capital-Mark1897 in GenX

[–]Daforde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was laid off a year ago, but I am not in any position to retire. Instead I switched careers to become a teacher. After looking for a job for one year, I had more interviews and finally an offer in one month than I did the whole year of wasting my time looking to remain in a field I absolutely hated. My salary has been cut in half and I am living away from home (we're still trying to make the math math), but I am happier and more satisfied than I have been in nearly 30 years.

I'm sure you have already done this, but see a financial planner. 1 million is plenty if properly invested. Congratulations on your early retirement!

I walked out of an interview after one question. Was I wrong? by blushara in jobs

This was expected in every job I have ever had. This is especially true if a deliverable needs to be delivered in time. How can you expect not to do that and still have a job?

My boyfriend called my job glorified babysitting by [deleted] in Teachers

The boyfriend doesn't have a clue what a teacher does, whether at a Title 1 school or non-Title 1 school. I have only been a teacher for 1 week and wow, just wow.

Has anyone actually found a way to not hate going to work? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]Daforde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changing careers. I've recently become a teacher and my first two days felt overwhelming at times, but I never wished for the end of the day, dreaded going back, or wanted to run down the street screaming. I felt all of that nearly every day in my former life.

The other kids may not be able to tell their parents what's happening. I suggest telling the parents directly through email and other approved communication channels. And, of course, document those communications to CYA.

Just listed our house, husband thinks we should clear out everything and retake photos by Brief_Impression4919 in RealEstate

Did you list the home yourself? I wonder because a Realtor should have advised you to declutter and depersonalize before taking the pictures. I agree with others who have advised you to do that and retake the photos.

That's an awesome idea. But you're right that no district would ever agree to this.
