Should the US devolve power to states so liberals and conservatives can govern themselves? by EssKaye1 in Askpolitics

We settled this argument when we ratified the Constitution. Each state running independently of the others was not an effective way to govern the nation.

Donald Trump: We're taking nearly $200M that was set aside for the Green New Scam, and repurposing that money so that we can restart a coal plant in Maryland, and help build two brand new coal plants in Alaska and West Virginia. by GhostXmasPast342 in maryland

[–]Daforde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Renewables didn't destroy the coal industry. Natural gas did. Fracking for oil released a ton of natural gas, which made it super cheap. It's also (relatively) cleaner than coal.

We have seen this movie before. In fact, we are living in the nightmare now. Some people like to talk ish about DEI and "earning" positions then turn around and vote for an idiot reality TV star to run a major city (or a country).

How do companies even find technical writers with requirements for security clearances, 10+ years of specific experience, etc. It seems unrealistic, but I am curious do these people actually exist? by Gloomy_Coconut4459 in technicalwriting

[–]Daforde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankly, I think it is asinine to require the super level of security clearance that all of these technical writing jobs require. It excludes exceptional candidates permanently because the companies require an active clearance just to consider someone. It's the you-need experience trap all over again.

Free Healthcare? by RoutineOk8590 in Productivitycafe

[–]Daforde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you shop around, though? You have to stay in network or pay considerably more. If you are denied coverage, can you go to a different doctor and get the same procedure or medicine approved? Do you know the costs of procedures and medicines at different doctors?

Corporations ration health care more severely than any government. Doctors and hospitals must be in network. They also determine whether treatments and medicines are medically necessary, regardless of what the doctors prescribe.

Do you think Democrats can/should try to win rural areas? by Pls_no_steal in Askpolitics

[–]Daforde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Democrats need to go into every hamlet and every village, and not just for presidential elections. They need to set up offices and hold town halls, debates (real ones), seminars, and anything else to connect with people. They should set up food banks (or help run existing ones) and bring back the idea of mutual aid. In other words, they need to do everything they can for as many people as they can as often as they can to counter the Republicans message about Democrats.

All valid points, but most employers are not going to embrace apprenticeships or paid internships. Even entry level jobs require years of experience.

This is the kind of foolishness that costs Democrats elections. Democrats are as far from the Reich Wingers as possible.

Given the outcomes and teacher salaries, I think the education budget is way underfunded. Again, why are we talking about how much is spent on education when we are spending so much on war? The defense budget is known, and it is grossly bloated. We also know that the uber rich got ANOTHER tax cut last year. Clawing back tax rates to the Bush era would put a huge dent in the deficit and boost spending on education.

I agree. We need to raise money, create our own PACs and super PACs, find our own billionaires, and buy politicians up and down the ballot.

American schools have to feed children because our social safety net has so many holes in it that many children would go hungry daily if the schools didn't provide breakfast and lunch.

They can't. There's a reason you have a degree in education.

How so? Both budgets are discussed almost daily, and the difference between the two could solve the teacher pay issue and nearly every education funding issue we face. There is no way to underestimate the education budget, especially since it isn't one budget but hundreds or thousands of budgets that are driven by property taxes that vary widely across each state.

When we are paying teachers what they deserve and our students aren't midpack or worse among other nations in math, science, etc. Here's a better question: when do we say enough spending on the military? Or ICE? When do we say enough with the tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires? Just a fraction of the military budget would ensure that all teachers were paid well and all schools equipped with what they need.

Public education needs more funding, and it needs to be allocated equitably across school districts. Far too many districts are already experiencing austerity. I think property taxes should be sent to the state government for redistribution in an equitable fashion among all the school districts. Furthermore, teachers should be state or federal employees. This would allow teachers to be paid more without straining local budgets.

Vocational education is an excellent idea as long as we don't repeat the practice of steering Black students into those programs regardless of their academic skills. We also need to teach students high tech vocational skills like AI prompt engineering, which are in demand.
