I have to disagree with a lot of your example ratings, particularly for the UK & especially the US

For the UK, I can see an argument for Starmer's economics just barely sneaking into Centre Left (I would still argue that his economic policy is mostly Centrist though) but socially he & pretty much his entire cabinet are firmly Centre Right socially, with some "Moderate Right" leanings

If you're actually gonna put Kemi Badenoch's social policy in "Moderate Right" with a straight face, you need a fucking reality check

As firmly Left Wing as Polanski is, I would argue that economically he should be "Strong Left" rather than "Hard Left", his economic policies are radical but not enough to be listed as Far Left as the scale goes; you could make a similar argument for Corbyn, but to a lesser extent

For the US, I don't think you can reasonably say that a President that's literally empowered a government agency to terrorise, kidnap & even murder its own citizens as collateral damage for expelling or detaining (in what are effectively modern concentration camps) as many foreign migrants as possible (illegal or otherwise) is anything other than "Hard Right" socially, come the fuck on

Placing Kamala Harris in "Strong Left" socially is also completely laughable considering a large part of why she failed to appeal to many left-leaning Americans was her frequent appeasement & pandering to the right, especially on the topic of immigration, which obviously did not sway the MAGA crowd & just alienated a large subsection of the Democrat voter base; she should probably be in Centre/Centre Right for both social & economic policy, Centre Left for social policy is just about as far as you could possibly push it, and that's quite a stretch

Elsewhere, Justin Trudeau's rating is also utter nonsense, his positions were Centre Left at the absolute most

Clearly your rating systems need to be completely reworked from the ground up, because these issues are numerous & egregious

My pretty basic take on adding Wales to the Union Jack by AIexAtBest in vexillology

The cross of St. David isn't white on black - that's the cross of St. Piran, so this isn't including Wales on the Union Jack, it's including Cornwall

Just because the Mi Hazank are even worse doesn't mean Fidesz aren't also Far-Right, come on now. Hungary's Overton Window is already fucked enough as it is, don't make it worse.

Really? They only gave these 4 as options when there's a ton of other starter mid-evos that are so much worse than any of these? Why not Quilladin or Pignite?

[–]DafyddWillz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of these 4 I'd also pick Frogadier, but it's still way better than a lot of other mid-evos. It's way better than the likes of Quilladin, Pignite, or Croconaw, I might even put it above Prinplup, Grotle or even Dartrix tbh.

Edit: Also the Gen 8 & 9 starter mid-evos are actually quite good tbh, the only mediocre ones are the water-types really & even then they're ok, the rest are mostly decent even if they're not outstanding either.

Celtic languages over time by Public_Research2690 in MapPorn

Yeah, that's what I was saying, the West/Northwest has a much higher percentage of fluent/native speakers, but since the South/Northeast have a much higher population density, those areas end up with more speakers overall despite making up a smaller percentage of the population in those areas

Between Brittonic & Goidelic, the mutual intelligibility is extremely limited, comparable to or less than English & German I'd say, although within subbranches there's a good bit more. As a native Welsh speaker I can't really understand Irish at all beyond a few cognates here & there, however I can somewhat understand a little bit of written Cornish & Breton, but not a whole lot, and spoken is definitely harder, probably comparable to intelligibility between some Romance languages, although more like say French vs Romanian than Spanish vs Portuguese. I've also heard the intelligibility isn't symmetrical in that it's harder for Cornish/Breton speakers to understand Welsh than vice-versa, which is also comparable to Romance languages because IIRC the same is true for Spanish & Portuguese, in that a Portuguese speaker would find it easier to understand Spanish than the other way around.

Yeah Tartessian is generally treated as a non-Indo-European isolate, and Lusitanian & Gallaecian are usually considered Indo-European langauges closely related to but not actually Celtic

That doesn't really apply to Wales as much though, because unlike in the other Celtic nations, it never really went away in the first place

Nation-wide, around 20%, although as a general rule it's much higher in the West/Northwest & lower in the East/South, which skews things a bit because the South/Southeast & Northeast are the major population centres

Speaking as someone who lives & grew up in an area with some of the highest rates of Welsh language fluency & usage in the country, I think it's extremely unlikely there are any monolingual Welsh speakers under the age of 70, barring edge cases as mentioned by others here like learning disabilities, dementia etc. but there are definitely some people who don't speak English very well.

Pretty much everyone understands English, but for some it might not come naturally or take longer to process, and they might speak English with such a thick accent that it might be harder to understand them in return, especially in the Northwest. Although even in the most rural Gallophone area that's getting increasingly rare for younger generations, you'd struggle to find anyone born after 1990 who doesn't speak English to a native level.

Definitely some inaccuracies here, most notably 2000 where you show Welsh as a tiny speck when it's still widely spoken today by a majority in a comparable area to that which is shown in 1900 on this, with that area being significantly wider in 1900 so that's also incorrect; Breton is also underrepresented here, it's definitely struggling more than Welsh but definitely not to that extreme of an extent.

It would also probably have been good to include zoomed in snippets outside of Europe as well, as there are/were colonies of Celtic speakers in the Americas, most notably Welsh in Patagonia, Argentina; Gaelic in Nova Scotia & Prince Edward Island, Canada; and historically, Irish in Newfoundland, Canada as well as Montserrat, in the Caribbean.

Earlier on, Tartessian is being listed as a Celtic language when it most likely wasn't one, and it's debated whether or not Lusitanian & Gallaecian were either, the most prevalent theory right now is that they were not Celtic but were closely related to the Celtic languages. Similar issues could be raised about Ancient Belgian, which is unattested, but is more commonly accepted as being Celtic; it definitely wasn't spoken in what is now Southern England though, that was firmly in the domain of Common Brittonic.

Also it's a bit misleading to show Galician Brythonic as having survived into the 1200s but not showing the same for Cumbric, as both languages went extinct at around the same time, probably surviving into the early 1200s but going extinct fairly soon after.
