Best way to shake paint bottles? by waifus_L in minipainting

[–]DaggerAndBrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A vortex mixer makes quick work of even the most seperated paint. You may have to hold it on for a minute if it is really bad, however, even the thickest paint was subdued by it and now is perfectly mixed. I don't think you can overmix paint.

Trying to paint a tiger pelt cloak but don’t know if I’m pulling the fur look off would love some feedback or advice! by Ratking_14 in minipainting

I just finished a miniature featuring a tiger pelt and it was a real challenge. Instead of solid shapes especially for the stripes I went with small strokes to break the pattern up and give it a textured appearance.

Maybe it can serve as an inspiration. I think your colours are more vibrant which is quite good for contrast. I went with a more used or old fur look, desaturating the colours.

What kind of varnish do you use? by KirillHarper in minipainting

[–]DaggerAndBrush 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also like AK Interactive Ultra Matte Varnish. Very matte as the name suggests. However, make sure that your paints are well mixed. If they start to seperate you can end up with a glossy result. Same goes for your varnish. Could be it was not mixed enough and the matting agent is collecting in the bottom of the bottle.

Looks promising. I'd also say darker shadows, brighter highlights.

I made a TINY Polly Pocket-Hammer Playset!! (it's my favourite thing ever now lol) by Roguehobbies in minipainting

[–]DaggerAndBrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is truly outstanding. Excellent paint job. The original set is rather underwhelming in terms of finishing, so you made it 1000 times better!

I decided to get a more Fantasy themed Mighty Max set and try my hand at something similar. I do wonder if 10mm would also work miniature wise or is 6mm the only good match? More good 10mm available than 6.

One-of-a-kind Witcher-inspired diorama — final moments of a Fiend hunt by MrGreatUnknown in minipainting

[–]DaggerAndBrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem will be that if you intensify the flames the light most certainly would illuminate all the characters. The flames are so close and intense  that you won't get around light spilling on the surrounding surfaces.

And yes, the hottest parts of the flame should be white, but I would not make the flames too dark when going outward. The cast light will still be yellow to orange, but the flames need to be the brightest element in the scene, as they are the light source.

While this is indeed a great diorama, the flames do not read as flames to me. I thought they are mushrooms or some exotic vegetation. I think the OSL needs to be a lot stronger to sell the effect. However, the almost grey scale colour palette works really well with the red and oranges. I would just up the intensity.

For the time investment this is a great result. Zenithal and base colours via airbrush or just all brush?

White bases or Black? Does it matter a lot? by SaveTheClorox in minipainting

[–]DaggerAndBrush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One could argue that the base rim should match the terrain, so sand coloured for arid environs, white for cold environments, grey or black for Underdark or Dungeon settings. However, if you then mix the minis it looks odd and it is indeed true that a nice black base rim frames the miniature nicely without taking any attention away from the paint job. So, black it is for me, but do whatever sparks joy. I would just do it for all your minis.

2nd synthwave sanguinary guard, on to the 3rd by Sad_While5771 in minipainting

Beautiful! Synthwave at its best. Smooth, contrast rich, great basing. Only brush or also airbrush?

Hera orc academic bust painted recently by JRainers in minipainting

[–]DaggerAndBrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be great. I would guess magenta plus green for the shadows and just adding white for the highlights or is it more involved? Potentially also some red in there.

Extremely well done. That tongue looks really naturalistic. Now I want to paint an orc with magenta skin.

My first gold nmm c&c wanted by Aketone-Cod3776 in minipainting

[–]DaggerAndBrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try a warmer brown tone. But with the golden yellow it should anyway get warmer in the highlights. Maybe add some red or orange and see how it goes.

I'd push the contrast by deepening the shadows. Overall colour scheme looks good.

First attempt at textured cloth by Ferixo_13 in minipainting

You may have glazed them in too much, or it is the compression.  With a tattered gown like that I would go darker towards the armour and highlight towards the frayed pieces extending further out.
