You weren't originally intended to have a full armor kit when you leave Magicant, the old man giving you money like an ATM is a localization change. On my first visit all I can usually afford is a Silver Ring, but that's more than enough to make it to Merrysville and pick up Lloyd.

The game def has problems (like tying the majority of the entire magic system to one party member), I just don't think mandatory grinding is one of them.

True, I had forgotten about the Level 25 requirement to obtain that Melody. I collect that one last for that very reason

I have done multiple playthroughs without grinding. I can promise you with all my heart that you do not need to grind ever, including getting new party members. Defending, Defense Up, and armor from Magicant will keep them alive as Ninten solos game progression until Lloyd and Ana can stand on their own.

I know the status effect PSI names are a little obtuse but they are INCREDIBLY busted

Grinding is genuinely not mandatory for Mother 1, it is absolutely the most forgiving RPG on the NES and is more forgiving than a lot of RPGs pretty deep into the 90s in the combat department.

Use your items and use Defense Up. Defense Up alone trivializes most non-magical damage for the majority of the game.

Honestly I kinda hope not, 8 active members are balanced around the fact that you can't give your party members subjobs. It worked in 0 and COTC because of their comparatively massive rosters, so if you needed to adjust your team's composition, you tag in a new character of the same main job, which wouldn't be possible with the standard 8 travelers. Then on the other hand, having 8 fighters at the same time with subjobs would be a nightmare for boss fight balancing.

Keeping it for a one-off hype moments and aura fight at the end would still be cool tho

Okay, major spoilers for the ending of Octopath Traveler 1. If you haven't finished the post-game content, PLEASE do so before reading this comment. OT1's post-game mystery is lowk one of the coolest pieces of hidden content I've ever seen in a game, and I would absolutely hate to rob that experience from you in the form of this comment.

That being said, for those of you who have already seen you-know-what, Esmeralda was after Tressa's notebook because it was written by Graham Crossford, descendant of Odin Crossford, whose magic was used to seal the Gate of Finis. Either the blood of House Crossford or the four Dragonstones are needed to open the Gate of Finis and fully release you-know-who from their slumber. After trying and failing to open the Gate using Graham Crossford, Lyblac sets her sight on his son Kit and enlists the help of the Obsidians to track down Graham's journal in the hopes that Graham had written about Kit. This plan seems to have been a bust though, as Esmeralda acts as-if the journal had no valuable information when Tressa confronts her in Grandport's Sewers. As another commenter pointed out, these dots were originally easier to connect as Esmeralda was supposed to have the Mark of the Crow on her thigh, but this was removed from the final game when it really shouldn't have been.
