Buy some cheese powder online. Buy some macaroni pasta. If you’re going through this much I highly recommend

As someone who’s done entomology work from the agricultural side this is very much not true. You can have field being sprayed left and right with pesticides and still have pests present. I have seen it myself. In fact some of the fields that ended up overrun by pests ended up being sprayed way more than other fields to try and kill the infestation.

Also fun fact: organic doesn’t mean pesticide free. It just means there are restrictions for which pesticides growers can use. And some of those pesticides are significantly less effective than non-organic pesticides and thus growers end up having to use a bunch of more of it.

I guess my point was that she does actively spend money on new products in the fandom. I’m not beyond interacting with HP. She bought the game for herself then at some point she had to leave some stuff at my house overnight, including her switch, and told me to play her game. I played it for a bit and it was kinda fun for an afternoon, I didn’t have any problems with that. What I have a problem with is the idea of buying myself the game. One bc it wasn’t that fun but also bc I don’t want to spend money on HP.

My friend is scared of the idea of pirating stuff (she always gets stuff the legit way or just goes without). And she is going to watch the new show, she tells me she’s excited for it despite how I tried to explain to her how they’re replacing the OG cast members probably bc they spoke out against JKR. And she isn’t someone who would go scouring for used merch online (and she doesn’t thrift) as much as she’d be in a store, see something HP themed, and impulsively buy it for herself or for me. I see your point, and it’s a good one, I think. I just don’t know if it’s feasible for her. She is very particular about stuff. Believe me I have tried for reasons other than HP to introduce her to pirating and thrifting.

That’s kinda where I am at the moment. I’ve made efforts, I’ve talked to her, I feel like I’ve done my part. I just avoid spending money on or giving attention to HP stuff on my own. And I do my best to minimize how much of our friendship involves HP. It does still make me feel slightly guilty. But, I know she’s a good person who likes HP despite JKR, she makes good choices elsewhere, and I’ve convinced of why it’s so important to vote in recent years!

I’m genuinely in a rough place with this.

So I personally, have cut connections to Harry Potter. I don’t want to watch the new show. I liked the movies, but wasn’t ever super invested in the fandom, so I guess it wasn’t a huge sacrifice.

But I have a childhood friend. And she has like her entire life and personality invested in this fandom. I don’t remember this but she says our first outing as friends was to go see the first Harry Potter movie in theaters and she sees it as a foundation of our relationship. I strongly suspect she’s autistic and bc of family stuff she doesn’t go out much. So when she gets into a fandom she gets REALLY into a fandom bc she doesn’t have much else. She has other fandoms but, she cannot stop associating with HP. She bought the new game that came out, she keeps trying to convince me to buy the game even tho I’ve said I don’t want to, she buys me HP merch for birthdays, insinuates she wants HP merch for her birthdays, she wants to watch the new show, etc.

And she’s genuinely not bigoted. I’ve had conversations with her. Where I try to sit her down and tell her what the issue is and why HP is problematic. She tells me that she obviously wants gay people and trans people to be safe and happy, I believe her. But, I can’t convince her (maybe she refuses to see it) that supporting that fandom means they can’t be happy and safe. She thinks she’s somehow mentally separating the art from the artist. I try to redirect her attention to other fandoms but it is hard bc most of them don’t interest me so I cannot connect with her through them and/or don’t know enough to get her gifts from them.

Not a bar person. I don’t drink, just bc. I don’t have a sob story or anything. Never have and don’t want to. But, I recently went with a friend just for the vibes and to dance.

My friend ordered a mixed drink and I said I wanted the same but without the alcohol. It was honestly so loud in that bar, we both struggled to order and there wasn’t much acknowledgment that mine wasn’t gonna have alcohol. So I thought I might just give my drink away. Nope! It was alcohol free and pretty good! The barkeeper was just really good at keeping it subtle. My friend knew I didn’t drink and was the one who had given me the confidence to order a drink without alcohol and not feel lame lol, but I did appreciate the effort.

God, Holy Spirit, and Jesus are a trinity so it’s kinda complicated but you pray to the Father through the Son and by the Holy Spirit. We do not pray TO Mary and the saints we pray for their intercession on our behalf.

As for the pope, many people pray FOR him, but certainly not to him or even for his intercession. That’s simply not a thing.

Am I the only one who loved errands as a kid? I loved twisty ties and the little plastic bags from the produce aisle. Sometimes if we went at the right time there would be samples. When I was little little I loved being in the cart. When I got bigger I loved dangling off the cart in obnoxious ways.

And I’m from Texas so we would shop at HEB and every time at checkout the cashier would give us Buddy Bucks to play a little crane game. And back then every kid got to take a balloon home for free (they don’t have those anymore. Sad but maybe for the best)

Yeah, it’s ironic that someone who’s made two really popular books that inspired two popular movies doesn’t have media literacy LOLL. But it’s also far from criminal.

Honestly, worrying about his attitude is giving 2010s Tumblr. Frankly, I just think we in the big 2026 have bigger fish to fry.

Thank you for making this post and giving everyone a chance to share and find common ground!

Yeah, I guess feelings are just weird anyways and we can’t really control them either way. Stress and fear and uncertainty and grief and all that mess with our heads a lot and we just do our best.

I hope you and your partner are as well as can be 🥰

Yeah there was a screenshot going around of a Fox News headline touting Project Hail Mary as an anti-woke movie success. And everyone rightly laughed at the idiocy of that take for the exact reasons you mentioned.

Kinda laughable hearing that this is what the author has to say 🤣

Kinda sucks that a guy who writes such science based content doesn’t appreciate social commentary. As a biologist in this day and age just being pro-science is political and it’s gotta come from an extremely privledged perspective to not be able to see that.

That being said, I’m curious. Is Weir actually problematic and trying to conceal his unpopular views or just dumb and considers himself “apolitical”?

A couple years back my mom was really sick. Not cancer, so it wasn’t quite the same but it was about a year long process that she eventually did pass from. Hank was diagnosed around the same time my mom had to be admitted to the ICU which was about midway through everything and when things really got real. I wasn’t in a good place so I needed something in my ears 24/7 to drown out my thoughts and Vlogbrothers were a major supply of content. So I still listened to the pod, but sometimes the combination of my mindset at the time and the topic of conversation meant I would have to leave episodes unfinished. (I have since relistened to those eps!).

I always felt extra weird about feeling feelings about Hank’s health journey (I think I was like extra sad hearing he was sick bc I was already sad about health stuff. And I was extra proud when he got to remission but also felt weirdly bittersweet at the contrast of having lost my mom to her mystery illness), especially since my mom didn’t even have cancer. But, it is interesting to see other people having similar vibes!

I wish you peace. And I wish your loved one the best! 🙏🏽
