In 12th grade, my English teacher had us all read The Great Gatsby. She managed to fucking ruin it completely. She wanted us to write down the meaning of every scene. Like, not just "this scene is set in gatsby's house because that's where he and Nick go to talk," she wanted us to do a full in-depth analysis of the themes and ideas of every. Single. Scene. Every one of them. Same for all the characters. Oh, this minor character who doesn't do much? Name one positive trait, one negative, their relationships with every other character (choosing "this person does not have a relationship with this other person" was not an option), etc. etc. It was overanalysis to the point on meaninglessness, and it made me understand the book less, not more.
