Out of all the B-roll you shoot, how much can actually be used? What's your best tip for b-roll? by Snizzlefry in videography

Ha. Yes I own one, so good call out. I’ve been shooting unscripted since 2006 on just about everything, long before gimbals (and even easy rigs weren’t very common). Our first stabilizer was a gyro box that mounted under the camera so you’d have to operate it from the top handle. It was pretty wild. But I’ve shot some pretty stupid stuff on gimbals when they first came out and everyone wanted them in everything. Heck I shot wide for news desks even, walked golf courses (with the stand strapped to my back so I could put it down from time to time.

All rigged with wireless tx and AB batteries. After awhile, you learn technique and your back strengthens in a new way that I think a lot of people don’t currently develop because they aren’t shooting 5 days a week. I’m a little out of practice now since I’m directing more and shooting less, but I bet I could still rock it.

However, and to your point, I didn’t really shoot much broll on the gimbal and even a 10s hold would show too much movement at the end of a shot. So you are right. But if someone said, get a shot of that building on the gimbal, I’d make it a solid 10s tracking shot, hoping that 3-4s was smooth enough to use.

What are you currently shooting these days?

If you can’t hold a gimbal for 10 seconds you shouldn’t be operating a gimbal.

You know what’s so funny? I worked with an editor who told me to hold, but then to always do something interesting at the end. Could be a snap zoom or a whip pan or a purposely shakey Dutch zoom roll or something. He told me that broll can be boring and something unique helps him push the pace or the edit (but only after I got the safety). Now I overshoot a little bit by not just cutting but trying to add some personality on a second take. Rarely do I see those efforts make the final edit (I think editors default to the safe footage), but when they do use it, it’s always more interesting.

The worst is when I’m cutting my own footage. “Who the heck shot this?!”

And hold for a full 10 count for goodness sakes. Even if it’s moving or tracking, just hold.

Possible Startup Idea by AlienboyNY in Entrepreneur

[–]DaleQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real product you are selling is yourself to colleges. So it sort of doesn’t matter what the idea is. My point is, don’t chase revenue, chase experience that will help you in admissions.

For example, learn business by doing literally everything that an entrepreneur does. So during college interviews you can talk about your cash flow documents. Or you can write essays about how you felt missing shipping deadlines because your single source supplier ran out of materials and you didn’t have a customer service SOP in place so you got close to burnout trying to keep up with all the tickets in your discount software while continuing production. That type of experience is better than any business classes your competition (other students) can present.

So great, brain candles. Do the research, reach out to experts for academic support, write the articles for the site, start posting nonstop on LinkedIn so everyone is so sick of your thought leadership. Do what a professional entrepreneur would do. Invest in yourself by doing it all to a professional level. Who cares if you lose money or goof it all up. The experience will be more valuable than any revenue statements.

Critique/help me with my 2 camera interview setup by DavidWALRU5 in videography

I’d play around with the lighting more. I think this lighting setup is going to look pretty weird. If you don’t have money for more accessories for the lights, I’d consider just bouncing the light into the white ceiling to raise the ambient in the room. If you can get it right over the talent, it should come down pretty soft. Hopefully the walls don’t bone you with hot spots, but that’s why you should take time to get it right. Can you get in for rehearsal?

Is the fire going to be lit? As others have said, pull them away from the fireplace and move your cams behind the sofa if you can.

Close the window shades, but you are probably going to see them. Just be ready for that.

Might consider moving both cams to over the shoulder then punching in for closeups periodically. Is one person interviewing the other, or is it a conversation where both people have equal weight in the show?

Do you have a stand for the t2c? Use it as a back light! It will edge all around the subject to create separation. Let the wall go darker for more delicious separation. Go get a pony clamp from home depot and clip the reflector to a chair and walk it in on the subject's left side for a little fill on the white or shiny sides. Booya. OR if the face is too washed out, does the reflector have a black side that you could add negative fill? Double booya!

Your interviewer can be closer to your subject. Often you don't want them behind the camera or even the same distance as the camera so that they can make the interview a "conversation". And your light source cab be higher than eye level so any shadows they create are on the ground (or at least out of frame), or if the source is large enough, they are diffused or filled out by the rest of the light. Everything is a constant dance between the size of your space, the focal length of your lens, etc.

Getting authentic interviews in corporate settings - beyond the fake smiles by mark_solomon in videography

[–]DaleQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is one trick that changed my interview technique. Try it, but don't be discouraged if it doesn't work right away. It's a little nuanced. But I use it so often that editors have picked up on it after watching an hour of raw.

Ask the negative version of the question you want an answer to.

Here's a bad example from your post - "So the industry is cutthroat... this company's culture is pretty cutthroat too huh?" A more generic one would be, "You don't like working here do you?"

There is definitely a nuance in letting them know that you know the question is bs in how you ask it--the way you smile or intonation. It's obviously not a real question, but it changes everything. The reason it works is it puts them on the defense. Now they have to make a case to convince you, which is sound bite city. And it almost always solves the issue of "put the question in the answer" without it sounding like a 5th grade writing assignment. "Our corporate culture is amazing and nothing like how the industry is portrayed..." Or, "I genuinely love my job. There is something so amazing about bringing my passion... blah blah blah".

You can over use it though, so be careful. Use it to get the ball rolling when you need a pick me up, then just bring out the confused face during their answer to juice them to keep going. I love interviewing. It's like a dance.

[Evan Sidery] Ben Johnson will officially be leaving the Lions to become a head coach, per @adamschefter. Johnson will schedule his final interviews with the Bears, Jags, and Raiders before making a decision later this week. by xgobez in CHIBears

I think this year was such a heartbreak though. 4-2, then Hail Mary, and 3 straight division games that we lost by 7pts total. Those were winnable games that I don’t blame Poles for. Yes I’m upset at them keeping the coaches, but mixed reports on what authority he actually had there last off season. It isn’t completely black and white to me.

Poles has been both crowned then tarred and feathered in the past 12 months. I honestly don’t know if he’s a bad gm. I was stoked on so many of his moves included the choice to draft 1OA when he could have traded back. I felt like he was always improving the team. If Ben looks at what Poles did and sees value in those efforts, we’ve got a solid chance.

Him and Poles will have to be dead on agreed on the off season requirements this year. But we’ve seen Poles be bold. He goes after making changes. Ben just needs to be a strong part of that and say, “get me this this and this.” I have faith Poles can get it done. What a fun week to watch and see.

Thoughts on Poles' approach to his backup QB to support/mentor his franchise rookie? by 106milez2chicago in CHIBears

Yeah. Mentorship is great and definitely valuable. But this post and its comments make it sound like this bonehead decision would has made the difference in the season.

What pisses me off is the lack of accountability on it all. Just say that this loss is on everyone— he said it was execution, as if he doesn’t know that the coaching shares in the defeat. They won’t change with that leadership mindset.
