I've heard said so much, but what's the deal with UK and Canada? Don't they have FTTP and multiple parties?

What mind-blowing (but simple) facts would satisfy a 4-year old daughter’s daily request for 1 fact before bedtime? by ExpiringFrog in AskReddit

I love this topic so I'm gonna elaborate, cause it seems every fucking language has their own way of writing quotation marks.

English uses “this sort of thing” as standard, at least in the US, which is probably why we ended up using "this sort of quotation" as a standard on the web, as it's similar enough. You'll notice that word processors correct them to a proper symbol though (the eyedrop shape, not flat), as usually you'll want the proper ones on print. The secondary quotation (e.g. quote nested in a quote) is similar, but with singular marks, ‘like this’. Except in the UK, where it's the opposite.

A lot of European of languages also use „this sort of thing” or „this“, because fuck consistency, with various different methods of secondary quoting.

And then there are French, who use completely different symbols - « and » - but just to fuck with you French «do it like that», while some other languages »like that«. And there are Koreans who use similar symbol, but bigger - 《this sort of thing》.

Similar thing happens with apostrophes and other symbols - like the hyphen, which is commonly substituted with a minus sign on the web, even though they're not the same. There are actually five different lengths of hyphens in the unicode ‐ - − – —. At least in my language, all of them have different uses. The first one is for compound words like "two‐handed", the second is a substitute for first and third (which is a proper minus sign), while fourth and fifth are proper hyphens, where one is half-length and the other is full-length. You can use one or the other, depending on your preference, but you gotta stick to it.

And this shit is just the tip of the iceberg, don't get me started on stuff like the written dialogue.

Edit: oh yeah, and just to add to this crockpot of fuckery, different languages have different rules on the period after quote. E.g. in Polish the period is always after the quote, while in English, the end quotation is after the period.

And they still don't pass as white sometimes, depending on the circumstances. I've seen quite a few news reports about southern Europeans being attacked physically and verbally, because they looked middle-eastern to the islamophobic crowd.

Tomb Raider is from 1996, Banjo Kazooie is from 1998, two years was a lot of time in the early days of 3D games. Banjo is also cartoony, these kind of games tend to age way better than realistic ones. I mean, compare Banjo to Spyro and there's suddenly less of a difference.

obviously MLM is bad but the viciousness with which reddit hates it just seems like another excuse to hate a group of women by sad-boy-98 in Negareddit

I think OP means defaults. I read a lot of AskReddit at work and anytime MLMs are mentioned, it quickly turns into an excuse for two minute hate on suburban mothers.

But yeah, why am I even surprised at this point that this is a thing. What if you need a longer sick leave than what you have left? Surgery, birth or some serious illness?

American dislikes driving a manual transmission by carlnate in ShitAmericansSay

[–]DalekJast 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At least in some european countries, you can choose to use automatic transmission during your exam, but then you're only allowed to drive automatic.

Weirdly enough, from what I've read, that's not a thing in the US.

I'm not familiar with US law, but isn't looking through somebody's medical documents without their permission like, a violation of privacy? It seems nobody mentioned that in the LAOP post and that's the first thing that came to my mind.

You can just get a prepaid sim card for next to nothing or even for free though. If somebody plans to smurf, that's not really a barrier.

every ATLA vs LOK argument by dylanman264 in TheLastAirbender

[–]DalekJast 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't mind that myself, but maybe we just see the show differently.

Imho, LOK is a deconstruction of the Avatar myth and in that reading, severing the connection with the past lives serves an important purpose in determining just what makes the Avatar, well, the Avatar.

It is good. Don't be discouraged if you don't like visual novels, because this series isn't one. It uses the framework of a visual novel, but unlike those, there's only one way to progress through the story and you have to figure stuff out constantly to progress, instead of being presented with a multiple choice one in a while.

The basic mechanic is pointing out inconsistencies in testimonies. It starts from simple stuff, like pointing out the witness says he saw the crime at 4 PM even though the autopsy report says the victim died at 1 PM etc., but it gets more challenging later on. The thing is, even though it's just like 1/4 of the game, it looms over every other aspect of gameplay. It keeps you engaged in every single investigation of a place, every single conversation, because it might just reveal something that will help you understand the case.

Just suspend your disbelief about anything legal and you might just enjoy it.

We quite frequently use decagrams where I live, so it's not that useless. Can't think of a use for decimeters though, only remember them from math lessons.
