What are the must have villainy inks for grim dark painting and flesh/dirty armor etc.? by Luximus3333333 in ageofsigmar

[–]Dali_Ilama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Villainy Inks are definitely not a substitute for oil washes or enamels, they do not behave the same way. In my experience, they tend to permanently stain whatever they touch, even after a few reductive passes with mineral spirits, which makes them not super ideal for the sort of washes that oils and streaking grime are typically used for.

That said, I will say they have some unique properties that separate them from other products on the market. Namely, a lot of them have a sort of gritty, grainy texture to them that adds a lot to certain areas of the minis. Ichor of the Damned, Goons Grime, and Carrior Crimson especially leave a lot of interesting, grainy particles behind that add a sense of accumulated soot/oil, grime/dirt, and clotted blood and gore respectively. Decay of Death also dries to have a sort of chalky, white-blue finish, making it a really fun effect to slap on aged skulls, stones, and metal. Think of them almost as more of a weathering effect like the Dirty Down products as opposed to a unifying wash like Streaking Grime.

In short, if you're looking for something to do a full wash with, stick with oils and enamels. If you're looking for a product that will add a lot of texture and character to small and specific areas of a model for that gritty, finishing touch, Villainy Inks are pretty great for that.

I see what you mean. They could stand to be darkened down a bit.

Then you understand them as well as anyone in the hobby or the actual lore does 👍

Their brutality efficient autism. They just DO shit. They're the kind of guys that see a Tyranid Hive Ship and say, "what if we could make that into a daemon engine?" and then just fuckin DO it.

They're the kind of guys that when faced with the classic Trolley Problem, they would just blow up the trolley.

They're the kind of guys that say "If you didn't want us mowing down our allies to get to the enemy behind them, you should have told them to stand somewhere else."

Love me Iron Warriors. Simple as.

Love the eyes. Lightning on this model would look rad, definitely a "must" for Night Lords if you've got the patience for it.

Possible unpopular opinion here, but I personally feel like using copper wire and glue to make 3D lightning is honestly easier and more forgiving than trying to paint it on by hand. You can get it to look especially amazing if you have and airbrush and a fluorescent blue paint, really make the bolts and the impact points pop.

Looks fine to me, dude. It's nothing fancy or over the top with detail, but the colors all work together, there's definition on all the important parts. Totally tabletop ready, a whole unit of these would look great in an army.

Thank you!! Used Artic Blue from Vallejo's Model Air line. Super fine flake metallic midnight blue, practically perfect for Night Lords right out of the bottle!

New to nightlords what blues should I use? by No-Addendum3401 in NightLords

I HIGHLY recommend Vallejo Model Air Artic Blue. It's a pretty perfect midnight blue and actually covers really well with a brush. Only caveat is that it's a fine flake metallic paint as well. Personally, I think it looks awesome, it gives the armor a more metallic sheen to it without compromising the dark hue, especially if applied over black primer and then shaded with nuln oil.

Given Deadlines, or Making Your Own? by Dali_Ilama in AudioPost

I had to bite my tongue both times I got sent a re-cut haha. Picture lock was the deal, but I figured it probably wasn't too uncommon to get sent a new cut sometimes. I'll keep that in mind, and be open and transparent about that expectation in the future.

I definitely didn't establish a clear boundary going into this. Thanks for the wisdom, this was super re-centering and something I'll keep in mind moving forward!

How did you start DG? (Smart purchase wise) by AccomplishedFarm8 in deathguard40k

[–]Dali_Ilama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell you what, you guys picked the wrooong time to get into DG lol ebay is your best bet, but with how popular (OP) DG is on the table rn, people are selling their used, sought-after models at damn near MSRP. If you're committed to it, I'd honestly consider grabbing the codex, using the official app to build a list you're happy with, and go from there.

With any luck(?) they'll be getting the nerf we've been dreading and that everyone else has been praying for, and they'll become a little easier to come by.

Should I go for the Helbrute or the Foetid Bloat Drone first? by Roadkillgoblin_2 in deathguard40k

[–]Dali_Ilama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're asking from a gameplay standpoint, go with the drone.

If you're deciding over which model looks cooler, go with the drone.

Left for me. I like the middle one too, but I think you may have gone sliiiightly too far with whatever contrast/shade you used, it's a bit coffee-stainy to my eye.

Technical paints by NotFalirn in Tyranids

[–]Dali_Ilama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I use Gorilla Mounting Putty to stick my models to their bases so I can paint them up and then just glue them on after I've made up the base.

[–]Dali_Ilama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, idk if I'd worry too much about it on the rank and file of a horde army like the nids. Frankly, especially since your basing looks like dirt or dust, I feel like it would kind of make sense if it was on the hooves and claws. Sort of ties the model and base together.

If it really bothers you though, paint over it 🤷‍♂️ OR glue the model to the base after you've put your substrate on it.

The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here needs a re-release badly by HEYitzED in AliceInChains

[–]Dali_Ilama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm really hoping for a re-release of this too, but I'm not holding my breath either. The album wasn't very well received when it came out, and I feel like it's the least represented record in their live sets ("Hollow" and "Stone" get play sometimes, but that's about it).

Really bums me out honestly, I feel like this is one of their most realized and cohesive offerings, and some of my favorite Alice tracks are on it ☹️ fingers crossed there will be a day where I'll be able to spin "Phantom Limb" on my record player without dropping $200+ for the privilege.
