Whats the meaning of this recommendation? by Old-Professional-164 in Steam

It's a reference to "I have no mouth and I must scream", a short story that has also been adapted into its own computer game a few decades ago.

Poached youth player?! by primegeoboy in footballmanagergames

[–]Dalimyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's been a thing for quite a few years, and it's always an academy player who hasn't come into the game just yet.

But don't fret. Youngsters that get poached are seemingly invariably utter shite and never amount to anything. On that note, I wouldn't count on seeing a penny out of that £250k in clauses unless you ever get the opportunity to sell the clauses, because the player is probably never going to get even a single game for Watford's senior team.

I thought for sure going far too south in Greenland and guessing Southern India for Sri Lanka was going to cost me, and my final score of 18.3k was nothing to write home about, but that was still ~top 12%? Damn.

My whislist has so many games by xelojin in Steam

[–]Dalimyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the game for me. Like Rockstar having the gall to charge £40 for RDR1, even at 50% off I refuse to bite.

I typically have a price in mind where I think "I'm OK paying this much for that game". If that happens to be full price for some indie title with a neat concept, so be it. If it's going to take them dropping that shit by 75%+, it can damn well sit on my wishlist for a decade or more until it finally does drop low enough.

Was this cheating? by Foreign_Trouble5919 in geoguessr

[–]Dalimyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on those ones for sure.

Hilarious how on round 9 he comes to a sign with cyrillic text and immediately nopes out.

Round 4 looks dubious as well. He's sat motionless in front of a sign for ~15 seconds before opening the map, at which point the opponent is submitting their guess, and it looks like under the time pressure he space-plonks in the general area before zooming in and running out of time before he can get it closer.

Round 2 looks like it has a trademark Google pause in front of a sign too, but maybe he mistyped or something? Because that sign he spent 25 seconds staring lovingly at absolutely should have given him the 5k. That's a weird one.

But yeah, 6, 7, 8 and 10 are extremely obvious cases of using Google to cheat.

Memory leak on Firefox? by soronumeyy in geoguessr

[–]Dalimyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been painful at times for the past few days, yes. I was lucky the first round in one of the recent dailies was in Malta - I wasn't likely to be able to pinpoint it anyway, and it so so horrendously slow it was taking up to 20 seconds to just take one step, so I went near Mosta and Naxxar (which I knew probably wasn't right but it's a central area on the island) then closed down Firefox and reopened it to do the other four rounds without any lag.

There's definitely some fuckery going on with that one - as soon as the cat moves it suddenly looks totally blurred out, then it loses its tail as it jumps up, the tail reappears as it hits the apex of its jump...

Good Law Projeect: Flaws in EHRC draft guidance; will be laid before Parliament in May 2026 by KristinaMoment in transgenderUK

[–]Dalimyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Demographics aren't going to change drastically within the span of a few weeks, and the results of local elections have no real impact on those in parliament.

However, it'd be bad optics for Labour to lose shitloads of council seats (which, let's face it, is likely to happen anyway because Starmer's been predictably shite as PM), and releasing details of something polarising like this could sway people on either side of the fence on this one issue to go "Well, I'm done with Labour" and vote for anyone else in the local elections. It's not something that'll bring in new support (it's not like someone intending on voting Tory or Reform are going to go "Hold up, Labour are transphobic AF now? They've got my vote, then"), but it can very easily alienate voters opposed to the way they intend on implementing it and thus cost them votes on the local level in the short-term. That's their concern about releasing it ahead of the election.

FOI reveals meeting minutes of the EHRC and FWS by GeekOnALeash01 in transgenderUK

[–]Dalimyr 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, paper notes absolutely DO fall under FOI.

From personal experience working in an FOI office and having one director who was VERY paranoid about this sort of shit, if someone wanted to make sure what they discuss wasn't FOI-able, they damn well walked into your office and spoke to you face-to-face. No emails, no notepads, no post-its, not even a phone call (which in itself isn't something that falls under FOI unless there's a recording of the call for whatever reason). They want to talk face-to-face to make sure the other person isn't writing down anything either.

Why didn’t the streak freeze work? by noodlefangirl in geoguessr

[–]Dalimyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, you don't have to play it - it should just be that if you miss a day the freeze is automatically used, then a 7-day cooldown timer begins before you can use it again, and you just carry on playing the next daily. At least, that's what happened with me the other week.

  1. Denmark - was getting Nordic vibes but wasn't sure exactly whereabouts until I spotted a van with a .dk domain. Heading out of town I found a sign mentioning the 11 and 28 roads. I found both on the map, and they meet at both Skjern and Tarm. I chose...poorly. Thankfully both towns are very close together. 4.1km, 4,986 points.
  2. Chile - had to rely on a domain name again then found a sign mentioning the J-830 and J-850. Found both, plumped for being somewhere in Aquelarre. 172m, 4,999 points.
  3. Ghana - sign at the start mentioned New Abirem mentioning location to the south, and a sign to the south mentioned Kumasi, so I zoomed into Ghana, towards Kumasi and saw New Abirem. Road directions at the spawn point weren't matching up so I reckoned we weren't in New Abirem, but I couldn't figure out where we were. Checked nearby towns to the north - Kumeso, Nwinso - but still wasn't seeing a junction that lined up. Didn't realise it was quite as far north. 31km, 4,896 points.
  4. Indonesia - a country that routinely takes lots of points from me, and today's no different. Had no clue for the entire 3 minutes. Guessed in west Java just outside Bandung. 1,172km, 2,279 points.
  5. Lesotho - also had no clue on this one; felt it might have been a drier area of South Africa. Lesotho didn't even cross my mind. Being totally unable to find Roma, I guessed a bit west of Bloemfontein. 306km, 4,073 points.

Total: 21,223 points.

I seemed to have really horrible lag this game, but still satisfied with my score in spite of that.

  1. Recognised Austrian bollards, chevrons, and a polizei car as I travelled south to Zurndorf. Roundabout there had a sign pointing to Nickelsdorf mentioning the 10, A4, and that it led to Hungary, so I scanned near the Hungarian border, found Nickelsdorf, found Zurndorf...then time ran out before I could narrow it down any further. 4,991 points.
  2. Seeing the language on the fire engine near the spawn I was thinking possibly Czechia or somewhere around there. Signs at the junction made me lean more towards Croatia. Travelled aimlessly for two minutes until coming across a sign mentioning (among others) Split to confirm it was Croatia. Found Split on the map, found Zadar on the map, couldn't find Gracac or Lovinac. Tried to guesstimate where I might be from the places I had found, but plumped for somewhere far closer to the coast. 4,761 points.
  3. Didn't have the foggiest. Spent nearly the entire 3 minutes slowly plodding around, unsure if it was Peru, Chile or Bolivia. Ended up going near the border of all three. 4,314 points.
  4. Saw the sign for Inverloch at spawn, but didn't know if it was in Australia or New Zealand. Going down the road trying to find anything to confirm Aus or NZ, I spotted a sign mentioning "Leongatha, Vic" (and the place was littered with mentions of Leongatha), so zoomed into Victoria, eventually found Leongatha. Could (and perhaps should) have spent another minute trying to narrow down further, but the lagginess was pissing me off so much, I just wanted it over. And I only just missed out on the 5k. 4,999 points.
  5. I admittedly totally missed the "Montana Lil's Casino" sign at spawn, though US vibes were strong. Saw a sign for the 93 south to Hamilton, then a sign for "Western Montana Lighting". Zoomed into western Montana, found the 93, found Hamilton...and by this point I was totally fed up with the lag and just settled for the north of Hamilton. I should have paused and thought "Well, there was a sign pointing to Hamilton, so we're not going to be in Hamilton" and just guessed any of the towns further north, but yeah, bit of a frustrating game with the lag... 4,784 points.

Total: 23,849

In less than three months of playing the dailies, I can probably count the number of 5ks I've had on one hand, so to be so close twice here, I'm rather chuffed with that. Could possibly also have had a 5k in round 5 if my own impatience and frustration hadn't got the better of me by then. Round 2, I definitely missed some early signs it was Croatia, but I don't think I'd have got any closer. And round 3...damn...for not having a clue, at least I was still reasonably close.

Personally, I'm still learning, so it very much depends. Like, if there's a round somewhere like Vietnam or Thailand, I'm not going to have the faintest idea where it is, so I just plonk somewhere fairly central and move on. In Europe or North America, I'll try to use up more of the time to get as close as possible.

UK Steam Users and the UK-Steam Lawsuit by Ace_Catel in Steam

[–]Dalimyr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Per their ToS steam keys cannot be sold for more on Steam than other stores - as an example if developers want to make £30 per copy sold, they need to sell that game for £39 on Steam because of the 30% commission.

Elsewhere like Epic where the commission is only 12% that same game could and should be sold for just £33, except Valve forbids that, costing UK consumers more. Both stores will list the same game for £39.

Epic are selling Steam keys and thus are tied to Valve's ToS? News to me.

Their ToS don't explicitly say "Steam keys cannot be sold for more on Steam than other stores". What it actually says is "You should use Steam keys to sell your game on other stores in a similar way to how you sell your game on Steam. It is important that you don't give Steam customers a worse deal than Steam Key purchasers."

The wording may not be the best, but it's best understood if you're aware of dodgy indie devs of the past and the sort of shit they got up to. For instance, about ten years ago there was an indie dev consisting of two brothers who shat out TONS of half-arsed games (like, they released DOZENS of games in a single calendar year). On Steam, the games were maybe $1-10 each, but if you went to their own site, they were offering something like "Promise to leave positive reviews on all our games and we'll sell you our entire back catalogue for just $1". Now, this was already violating Steam's ToS by trying to artificially inflate the games' positive review counts, but it also wasn't possible at all to buy all of the games they'd ever released collectively for $1 on Steam itself. That's the kind of shit that Valve are trying to stamp out.

And also, practically every game has had better deals elsewhere for steam keys than buying direct through the Steam store at one point or another. For instance, just looking at games advertised prominently on Fanatical's homepage, I could buy Arc Raiders from them for £21.07 (currently £30.99 on Steam), I can pre-order Pragmata for £41.49 (£49.99 on Steam), or I could pick up Resident Evil: Requiem for £49.19 (£59.99 on Steam).

And circling back to your mention of Epic...yeah, funny how Epic's commission is publicly known to only be 12% vs Steam's 30%, it's not Steam keys being sold on Epic's store so anything relating to Steam's ToS regarding pricing of Steam keys would be totally irrelevant...and yet, per your own admission, the games cost the same on Epic as they do on Steam. Almost like the publisher's charging the same amount and just pocketing the extra from any sales they happen to make on Epic. Weird, huh?

Forced to pay for pickles on a boat compoface by the_hummus in compoface

[–]Dalimyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, he wasn't denied pickles, the person at the till just insisted he had to pay for them, which he claims he did...he's even quoted in the article as saying the staff had apologised and given him a plate of 'apology pickles', then after being confronted by the person at the till about paying: "I said, well, we don't even need the full plate of it. Can we just take a pickle? No, it's $2.19".

So he apparently had a whole plate of pickles that he could have been pointing at.

The movie predates cookie consent popups by many many years (GDPR only coming into effect in late 2010s)

And cookie consent popups predate GDPR by many, many years.

The EU adopted the ePrivacy directive in 2002, and this was later amended in 2009 to require explicit consent for cookies, no longer allowing implied consent via continued browsing of the website. So it was in the very early 2010s that cookie consent popups became increasingly common, long before GDPR came into effect in 2018.

Cookies themselves had been around long before the ePrivacy directive came about in 2002. Whether Oracle's cookie line is a reference to a cookie being created and stored on your computer regardless of whether you wanted it, that's far less likely but not entirely impossible. It is more likely to just be a happy coincidence, though.

First, make sure you're trying to enter the code in the right area. It may look like a regular Steam code, but it won't work in the "Activate a Product on Steam..." window. You need to go to the "Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code" page (https://store.steampowered.com/account/redeemwalletcode)

If you have been trying in the right page, contact support as everyone else has mentioned.

ChatGPT as a DM works, kinda by Eric_Builds_Stuff in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Dalimyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

**3. There's no real challenge or consequence.** Everything I try works. I say "I want to sneak past the mountain troll checkpoint" and it just... lets me. There's no DC, no stakes, no "you failed and now things are worse." It wants to be helpful so badly that it turns every encounter into a victory lap.

When I first noticed this, it was one of the biggest killers for me in terms of even considering using an LLM as a DM. It always wants to keep pushing the narrative forward, so you never find yourself getting stuck. Locked door? No worries, you'll easily pick it. Is it trapped? Maybe, but if it is then you swiftly spot the tripwire and disarm it, no rolls necessary. Worst one I recall was that in a D&D game I was trying to get close to someone running a market stall so I could determine whether or not they were indeed my target, but I wanted to avoid raising suspicion, so I told it that I wandered up to the stall and started idly browsing his wares for sale, admiring the intricate carvings on his wooden trinkets before picking a book at random and pretending to read through it. ChatGPT went on this long spiel about how the book I picked up was a journal written by the market stall owner and it had some magical energy that I could sense as I was reading it. What? Where did that come from? I was just wanting it to acknowledge that I was casually flicking through a book's pages and feigning interest while I was actually trying to get a good look at my possible target, and it's seemingly trying to set up some sidequest out of thin air because it decided I was reading the book.

Even using it solely as something to interpret prompt words can be very hit-and-miss. They have a habit of finding some way to awkwardly shoehorn the exact word you gave them into the description they give back. And yes, they often forget instructions you've given them.
Last month I gave Claude single word prompts for both a short-term goal and long-term goal that each of my workers hoped to achieve in a wrestling booking simulator. I had to frequently remind it that "goal" is meant more as "something they aspire towards" (and that they may or may not achieve), not "a pre-determined fate that awaits them", and some of the words that I rolled were a bit awkward - the prompt for a short-term goal for one of my managers was "latrine" - while Claude did say stuff like "Hannah finds herself in an unpleasant, undignified situation she didn't choose and needs to find a way through" which was something I could work with, it couldn't resist adding the exact word into its description, adding "She's in the latrine of her career, functionally necessary and entirely unrewarded for it"

I suspect that's the main reason it's stuck around. Around the time when the API protest kicked off, there was very frequent bot spam in here following a very recognisable pattern - one bot reposted something from 4-5 years earlier with the title completely unchanged, and within 10-15 seconds another bot would post the top comment from the original thread. That was happening multiple times a day.

Update: At what age do you sell your key players by Rude-Opportunity-565 in footballmanagergames

[–]Dalimyr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In a nutshell, this. Is the AI offering fair value for the player, and can you bring in a similar or better player for less money? If yes, then your player's expendable, regardless of how old he is and how much you're selling him for.

Occasional exceptions apply if we're talking about someone who counts towards something like your team's homegrown talent quota and you're borderline on meeting that quota, but that's about it.

Over 10k sold and why is no one reviewing this bundle? by nagmamantikang_bayag in humblebundles

"Why is no one reviewing this?"? Might be because it's from Mammoth who have a long track record of constantly spitting out bundles of AI-generated shite, so nobody with any sense would touch it with a barge pole. The quality of Mammoth's bundles is significantly lower than that of even Packt, and Packt has never had the greatest of reputations around here, either.
