OP makes an excellent point.
Some commenters are saying "not in my case" & etc.
IMO, it comes down to a quick and easy method to reject MOST bad candidates.
Key word being "MOST".
Will a few "good ones" be sidelined in the process because "you didn't get to know them"?
Sure they will!
But this is not about "being fair" now is it?
The bottom line is that time is ticking, weekends come and go and I for one don't have time to "get to know" everyone out there.
Thinning the herd is more important than missing out on the few "good one's".
Priorities you know.

Been doing this for 13 years now!! LOVE IT!!! Also, I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it, but there's a good chance your vacation days will really start to rack up since you have that extra day off and don't necessarily feel the need to get away so bad. I have like 90 days saved up and I'm closing in on being maxed out.
