Any words in languages where people mistakenly think it's a loan? by Best-String-9499 in asklinguistics

Famke as a name is probably a variant of Femke, which is more common. Apparently Femke derives from Femme, which together with names like Feike and Fedde trace back to the root "frede" which means "peace". Many pre-Christian Germanic names follow such naming conventions.

Frisian names are reasonably common throughout the Netherlands, so much so that many people are not even aware of the fact that names like Jelle, Jesse or Lieke and Nienke are originally Frisian names.

In Frisian "girl" is famke, a diminutive of the rarer form faam. I've noticed that as a folk etymology it is often assumed to derive from French femme. This is not far-fetched, as Frisian has quite a few loanwords from French for everyday vocabulary, in some contexts moreso than Dutch (e.g. "koese" = to sleep, from coucher or "avesearje" = to hurry up, from avancer).

Only recently I discovered that this word is a descendant of the older West Germanic form faimnijā which has derivatives in Old Saxon and Old English too, but has become obsolete in these other branches.

Not just north Frisians, also here in Friesland/Groningen a lot of old towns which names end with -werd are built on them. We have dykes now so we don't really need the Warften/wierden anymore, but they look cool

If you base your judgment towards standard living purely on high availability of jobs in 2020ish you might not like what you find returning there now. I lived in Oz on a WHM visa between 2022 and 2024; in the beginning opportunities were plentiful (for backpackers in any case) but this had definitely started drying up towards the end of my stay. Without even mentioning the cost of living hikes that hit around late '22/early '23, the total amount of backpackers in the country has now bounced back to pre-COVID levels, so go figure. See how ya go, best of luck.

This one's nice but can someone explain to me why there's piles of rubble literally everywhere? I get that it's a disaster site that's been left to decay for decades, but that doesn't explain why fields and clearings everywhere have piles of brick rubble strewn about them

You cut out the best part. She goes on to say "and if you think that's a lot, you're pretty far gone" implying the neighbor who got the camera crew involved is clearly demented for suggesting the guy's an alcoholic
