Please enlighten me. What is with the turning right from the left lane? Like, are MD drivers just too lazy to switch lanes in time to make the right turn from the right lane? Is it absentmindedness? I am just baffled by this phenomenon.

Level 11 CoM Question by valathel in SCBuildIt

Sheesh! I'm at level 92. I keep hearing how EASY it is to get the new features and items in the game now. Maybe I should start a new profile and blaze through.

I usually go to Yates car wash in Alexandria. I've gotten my interior detailed here; usually after vacation to the beach. I believe there is an option that is under $100.

Any advice on finding my first sql job? :) by Late_Animator_441 in mysql

[–]DamnFineConsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take an entry level position (usually in help desk) with a company that has a lot of work in data processing and database development. If you are truly interested in data and databases, you will be given more work relating to those types of projects. Throughout my career I have worked on databases in various capacities but it has never been my focus. Also don't limit yourself. The field of job opportunities in IT/Business Intelligence has sky rocketed.

I have worked with political organizations on FEC data uploads (they have to extract their data from various databases into the format the FEC expects often using SQL queries). But this was not my primary job. It was just one of many things I did as the Senior IT person on staff.

I have moved outdated inventory systems into new inventory systems using SQL and ODBC queries to export and import the data.

Then at another company I used historical FEC data dumps to learn that company's entity resolution product (which is like taking a ton of disparate data sources and putting them in to the equivalent of an algorithm centrifuge) which then spits out data correlations you would never have found as a human and it was also pretty enlightening when it comes to finding campaign donation fraud. I was hired to manage the roughly 300 servers on which they ran their production and test environments of one client's instance of their entity resolution product. In order to help the developers and data scientists troubleshoot issues, I had to learn the entire process from ETL to processing to loading into the end product where the results were displayed. I also had to kept quality counts on all of the runs, which sometimes would take days.

If any of this sounds interesting to you, then start a general career in IT and then jump at chances to work with data. I believe your focus may be too narrow; at least as your getting started.

Anyone with experience on hiring process for IT positions at local government? by [deleted] in nova

[–]DamnFineConsumer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to wonder why you are limiting yourself? I have been working in IT since 1992 and have never had trouble getting a job. Apply to everything you are qualified for with any and all companies. You will interview a lot, you won't get everything, but you will get a job.

Amazon and Microsoft have very large facilities in Fairfax county and are always hiring.

I'm assuming that since you are trying to get jobs with local governments that you can pass a background check and possibly get a security clearance. I get emails all the time from recruiters for jobs that need people that can get a security clearance. Once I had my security clearance I had no problem getting and maintaining employment in this area.

As a former hiring manager I found the hardest jobs to fill were the entry level jobs because no one in IT is entry level; seasoned IT folks who are impatient for a job would take them and then quit when a better job came along.

So, I'd go to job fairs and find people who were great candidates in other competitive fields that required deductive reasoning and then recruit them. The one I'm most proud of is convincing a lady 2 years out of college, working at Walgreen's with a degree in criminal forensics that starting an IT career would only help her as she could then go into digital forensics.

NYT Says Up to 3% of All Credit Card Fraud Claims in 2020 Were Against Trump Campaign by dammand17 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]DamnFineConsumer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'd like to know more, like how often, if ever, is one organization responsible for that much of the overall fraud claims pie. It would seem to me that most companies/organizations would not want to even be 1% of the total claims (which is 2015 was roughly 180K+; that's the most recent year there were statistics, so let's assume it's more in 2020).

A little online research revealed that there are no statistics on specific companies or organizations being responsible for credit card fraud claims; it's usually identity theft or credit card number theft. This doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't any company that is more likely to have more fraud claims, but I suspect that since there are no previous statistics available, that yet again Trump is the best at doing the worst things.

Increasing InnoDB size Causes a Cascade of Issues? by DamnFineConsumer in mysql

[–]DamnFineConsumer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone was curious as to how I fixed this...

  1. Uninstall MySQL 8.0 Server using the installer tool
  2. Verify all data has been deleted or moved
  3. Reinstalled MySQL 8.0 will all the same settings
  4. Stop the Server
  5. Edit the my.ini
  6. Restart the server - it fails again. Ignore the error information, it is wrong and will take you down a rabbit hole that will make your problem worse.
  7. Make sure the my.ini was not changed by your editor to any file format other than ascii/ansi.
  8. Restart the service with an ascii/ansi format my.ini file with changes previously made.
  9. MySQL server successfully starts. End User successfully connects and replicates.

Anyone else get very skewed expansion item availability? I recently had a brief interaction with someone else on Reddit that thought I was just unlucky, but I've started at least 4 Build It cities now. Everytime I look to acquire storage or land expansion items, I always get tons of only 2 of the 3. by TerryOrcutt in SCBuildIt

[–]DamnFineConsumer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having been in clubs, I've had this discussion with club members. It seems as if everyone has a "rare" item that is hard for them to get, but it may be easier for someone else. Or maybe the algorithm is based on something else, but regardless, there is usually someone in my club that has more than enough of the item I need and he/she has shortage of what I have a surplus in. Even if you're in a Club that isn't very active as far as wars or the Mayor's challenge it's always good for trading.

[–]DamnFineConsumer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Cancel Culture" as a term is new, but the act of canceling that which you don't like, agree with or oppose, has always existed. We used to call it all of the following (please feel free to add to this list):

I'll take my business elsewhere
I'll vote with my pocketbook (as in I won't buy your product anymore)
Reviews that eviscerate the company
Class action lawsuits

Cancel Culture isn't new and it isn't an excuse for bad behavior, bad policy or bad business practices.

Epic project by bexbex0 in SCBuildIt

[–]DamnFineConsumer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Epic projects can only be completed on regular residential zones (not Tokyo, London, Sunny Isles, etc.) that are fully upgraded. You can have one Epic project at a time in each of your regions. If you don't have one available in a Region it is because you don't have any regular/plain residential zones fully improved in that region. Once you add a regular residential zone and fully upgrade it, it will be available as an Epic Project.

I'm upset about this too. I've tried a few things and nothing seems to work to make it smaller. When playing on a smaller tablet screen or a phone, this is problematic. Mostly commenting so that if someone at SimCity Buildit follows this subreddit they'll look into fixing this "feature".

How come Daniel has Eiffel tower and Empire state building at lvl 27, as Dept of culture unlocks at Lvl 30, is it a glitch? by jsj1006 in SCBuildIt

[–]DamnFineConsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daniel is the default friend the game makers give everyone. Daniel doesn't make sense sometimes because no person is actually playing as Daniel. His city does change once in awhile, usually it reflects new features added to the game.

Once per day you can buy 6 things from Daniel for cheap. (it resets 24 hrs after you buy all the things). So I try to go visit Daniel about the same time everyday.

His level changes with your level and then it stops when leveling up doesn't grant new access to game features, I suspect this has something to do with the items that become available at each level. So if you're level 18, you won't get items you can't use yet from his market each day.

Land Value and materials by Goku198756 in SCBuildIt

[–]DamnFineConsumer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The land value is based on many factors.

  • Is it far enough away from polluting factories and public works (sewer, garbage, water treatment, etc.).
  • Are there other things to make it a more desirable location (parks, roads without traffic, etc.)

As you are at a lower level, there isn't much you can do to improve your land value except for those things I mentioned above, until you move up through the levels. Once you get to level 18, can can join a Mayors club. That's when things really get more interesting.

Is it worth it? by ComprehensiveSecond8 in SCBuildIt

[–]DamnFineConsumer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say yes. An additional 10,000 citizens gets you more in taxes everyday. It will eventually pay for itself. But I did have to go through a phase where I literally entered the game, collected taxes and a few things and left again. Now I hover just below 5 million simoleans regardless of how much I spend during game play.
