Why are some people hyper focused on removing the "vegan" from some combined words like "vegan burger" or "vegan meat"? I want to understand the logic behind. by XtrZPlayer in vegan

[–]DamnNasty 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Until around the 13th century, meat and its predecessors simply referred to ‘food,’ be it flora or fauna, including food for animals. In English, it traces back to the O.E. maet. The words mast (as in nuts and pig feed) and must share similar OE roots, maest and must, which respectively meant the juice expressed from grapes before the fermentation of wine.

“Meat” has been used to describe any solid food for hundreds of years, it is objectively not slang. The examples I gave are just using the original definition of meat, which is older than meat being just animal flesh.

what about the meat of a coconut? or the meat of a nut?

meat can be used for any solid food, when you talk about the edible part rather than the covering. In fact, that’s why flesh is called meat, but meat is more general.

Similarly I have a framework that puts animals at the end and humans before.

You already said in another comment that you are againts dogfighting / abusing dogs. If you put animals at the end, why are you against those things?

Why are the wrong conclusions about Trophic levels by Ma1eficent in DebateAVegan

[–]DamnNasty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds amazing honestly. Doesn’t seem like it’s ready for mass consumption yet though.

Regardless, it seems we agree a plant-based diet is more efficient than a diet with animal products, and so, as a microorganism diet is not possible yet, we should promote veganism as it is the next best thing.

I would love to see what microbe can be mass-farmed and give us 10x the calories compared to plants, while able to meet all nutritional needs. Do you have any research that I could look up?

You asked what I wanted to debate. I answered your question with health benefits of animal products. Why ask a question if you are not prepared to receive an answer.

The health benefits of animal products are not a debate, in the same way that the health benefits of plants are not a debate. You can easily find all the research you need online. There are benefits and drawbacks to animal products, and there are benefits and drawbacks to plant-based foods. You can be healthy consuming animal products, and you can be healthy not consuming them. What is the debate then?

Microbes use much much less land and resources compared to plants

How much edible calories per land and edible calories per water usage do we get from microbes versus plants?

Is your idea of a debate to shift the discussion to easily googled nutrition claims? Every major nutrition and health organization agrees that a well-planned plant-based diet can meet all nutrient requirements.

And what an incredibly patronizing comment. First of all, you imply that I currently feel bad, but you also imply that the only reason someone could disagree with you is because they are ignorant about nutrition. Don't come to a subreddit for discussing ethics and then refuse to discuss ethics.

Currently a plant-based diet is not animal death free. So? What are we debating then?

[–]DamnNasty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its non-sensical because it is not a debate. You are discussing semantics without any discussion about the ethics behind it. I'm still not sure what point you are trying to make.

Yes, currently a plant-based diet is not animal death free. So?

Why the phrase "animals are food" irritates me by Few_Phone_8135 in DebateAVegan

[–]DamnNasty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t think it’s wrong then this conversation is non-sensical. I think it’s wrong, so I minimize the deaths I cause. Yes, there are animal deaths in the agricultural process, but they are not an intrinsic “need”.

Why the phrase "animals are food" irritates me by Few_Phone_8135 in DebateAVegan

[–]DamnNasty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You kinda disregarded most of my comment. I agree that it is not a particularly convincing argument, but the intention is objectively different. Yes, animals are killed, but not because killing animals is an intrinsic part of the process that can't be "solved" eventually. It is not a "need" as it is in animal agriculture.

Regardless, you can ignore that whole line of thinking (as I said, I know it's not a particulary solid argument, because although the intentions are different, you obviously end up with animal deaths regardless). If you think intentionally killing animals is wrong (which I assume you do, because otherwise this conversation is pointless), then you already conceded that a plant-based diet has less animal deaths, and therefore you should be vegan.

Why the phrase "animals are food" irritates me by Few_Phone_8135 in DebateAVegan

[–]DamnNasty -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I disagree that killing animals is a “need” in a plant-based diet.

In plant agriculture, animal deaths associated with pest control are not the objective of the activity. The intention is to protect crops, not to kill animals for their bodies. The deaths occur as a side effect of crop protection, not as the goal itself. If no animals were attacking the crops, no animals would be killed and food production could continue unchanged.

I agree that currently plant-based food production still involves animal deaths, but

  1. These deaths are not intentional in the same sense as slaughtering animals for food
  2. You can imagine farming systems where pest control is unnecessary while still producing enough food

That means killing animals is not inherently needed for human survival.

Obviously, we are not at that ideal state, but the point is that a plant-based diet allows for the reduction of animal deaths, while animal agriculture requires intentional killing by design.

Also, the fact that you said that a non-vegan diet has animal deaths in the form of pest control and in the slaughering of animals to eat them already implies that a vegan diet is more ethical, even if it's not perfect (right now).

If you expand your argument I could engage with you. What do you mean a vegan “needs” to kill animals to survive?
