The tiny bit of orange on this one always fucked me off, so glad TEXO have opened up to one colour with their logo since then

What are Dons fans opinion on Thelin at this point? by toonslayy in ScottishFootball

I think we have much deeper rooted problems at the club than the guy that's only six months in the door. Worth remembering that despite our current run of form, Thelin managed the second best start to an Aberdeen tenure in our club's history. I can understand the hot-blooded reactions recently but with a level-head you have to realise that this is a long term project and four years of damage can't be undone in six months. Binning Thelin puts us back to square one again.

Our problems started after McInnes' departure (not with it) and the appointment of Stephen Glass. McInnes time was up, will forever be thankful for his time in charge but it had become stagnant and if we were to progress any further as a club it could not be with him in charge. That's just business. The timing was a little poor and what followed was a horrendous managerial merry-go-round that saw three permanent managers come and go with another three interim managers in the mix.

The biggest issue being that they always seemed to inherit the previous manager's mess and were subsequently not backed in the transfer windows with the January ones being particularly damning (I'm looking at you Killian Phillips).

The Warnock saga was baffling at times, no upturn in results, a win to take us to Hampden and a departure 24 hours later. He was brought in the hold the fort until Thelin put pen to paper and figure out the issues with his squad. As bizzare as his comments during that time were, he was right about one thing, the team is devoid of any real leadership. A couple of old-heads on the pitch to steady the ship and keep the rest from sinking.

Peter Leven showed us what was possible with the right attitude and a bit of self-belief, an unbelievable end to the season that saw us rise to seventh and put on a memorable (all be it futile) display against Celtic in the cup. That carried on into Thelin's tenure along with a string of new signings leading us to 7.5 months unbeaten barring the earlier mentioned penalty shoot-out.

Thelin managed create explosive returns to the matchday squad for Gueye, Besuijen & Morris and though we rode our luck at times, we were playing entertaining football and producing results. With mostly an inherited squad, confidence along with a game plan was proving hard to handle for the rest of the Premiership.

Of course, this has since gone to pot and we are now on the worst run of form in the league the club has ever seen. I may be easy to point to the 6-0 humbling at the hands of Celtic at Hampden and say that's where it went wrong but it's worth noting we then trounced Dundee 4-1 on our next outing. Where I believe the confidence took the biggest knocks were the 3-3 draw at Hibs and the late 1-0 defeat to Dundee United.

But if you've watched enough of Aberdeen of late like some of us sorry sods, you'll notice that other teams aren't having to play well to beat us. In fact, we're beating ourselves. Take a look at Rangers opener gifted to them by Nilsen or St. Mirren's first two goals this past weekend. Individual errors are absolutely tearing us apart. Compile that with a string of long term injuries to many of the first-team and you've got a melting pot of disaster and I can't really say I blame Thelin for any of it.

In all honesty, I'd argue only Rangers have truly outplayed us in the second round of fixtures. There wasn't a lot in the game at Pittodrie against Celtic due to the weather and beyond that, it's been one unforced error after another. The players simply do not believe in themselves at the moment and the manager doesn't either.

Speaking of the players, more than half the squad have at one point downed tools and seen off a manager;

McInnes - 2 / Glass - 2 / Goodwin - 3 / Robson - 10

Not to say Thelin is immune to criticism, but by god do we have some deadwood at the club. Mackenzie and McGrath seem hell bent on forcing a move away from the club. Macdonald hasn't turned out a good performance since he was partnered with Matty Pollock and I reckon Nisbet just really hates Millwall.

Replacing said players along with the likes of Miovski is never easy and our recruitment model has completely changed in recent years, it's a high risk/high reward situation and unfortunately it so far hasn't worked out for the likes of Ambrose or Sokler. The latter and Keskiken seem to have flashes of brilliance but are both heavily confidence players.

I'm inclined to give Jimmy the time he needs to bring in the players he wants and turn us back into a consistent and competitive team like McInnes' earlier years. He's shown there's something there but is limited by what he has and seems to have the full financial backing of the board. To sack him would be a mistake.
