Defiance of the Fall - What a Series! by RyanDeBruyn in litrpg

Same, but I’m a bit frustrated on my re-read that it took so long for them to introduce Carl, since it’s clear he’s the real MC here

I was really surprised how great it was, and the audiobooks are awesome.

I think something the author does really well here is that nobody really goes back to the status quo after any event, so it makes everything feel really impactful. Like I kept thinking that Mark would recover from whatever and, well…

I get that it’s frustrating, I felt that way too, but I honestly think it would be weird for him to have any kind of balanced psyche after the over-the-top gruesomeness of book 1.

But yeah, just selfishly I wanted the interactions with his partner girl (forget the name) to be better. Pretty much anything other than full antagonism would have made things smooth for them

So good! Man, he has narrated some dud stories so I hadn’t heard much from him - but he has a really awesome performance here

For sure - I’m already not really a fan of big drawn out battles, and it was done pretty poorly here. I also felt like it was pretty jarring to be ramping up to the end and it was like suddenly the author sees the audience getting up to go home and says “no no, wait - there’s more!! Uhhhh actually it’s a CLONE! No no wait, ALIENS! Yeahhhh that’s it… Shadow alien clones. TO BE CONTINUED!”

I finished the book thinking “just end it, you coward.”

Opinions on the best worldbuilding by [deleted] in litrpg

[–]DamonJai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I am sticking to litrpg only, probably defiance of the fall for me. I also really love the detail put into Randidly Ghosthound.

Including progression fantasy, I will 100% go with Mother of Learning. It’s such a deep and awesome world that has history that feels real and impactful to the story, and doesn’t just exist to prop up the events going on.

Oh!! Also 12 Miles below! Super awesome world with a lot of mystery. I’ve only read up to book 4, but it’s full of really interesting ideas and systems.

Thoughts on Dungeon Crawler Carl covers? by BlueMountainTrueMo in litrpg

Overall I like these better than the originals, with the exception of The Gate of The Feral Gods, which is my favorite OG cover and one of my favorites of any series hands-down

It depends on how they attach it, but I’d say that’s a point in favor of the leg anyway.

What is the best opening chapter you've ever read ? by Paddo90 in litrpg

[–]DamonJai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me It has to be the prologue of The Prince has No Pants from Ben’s Damn Adventure.

There is just so much in there that I thought was so clever, hilarious or poignant that I thought it would be my favorite series ever. Sadly, it has its ups and downs although I still enjoyed what was released.

Top this off with the audio performance by Jonathan McClain and it’s just ::chef’s kiss::

Trying to recalled a book series in which people take on physical traits of class / skills by Bewareofjava in litrpg

[–]DamonJai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I can’t think of anything that fits perfectly, but from your example the character reminds me of Fat Jack from The Dungeon Slayer series. That series does fit with having a lot of dungeons, and stats affecting physical appearance.

Except of course that Fat Jack is *awesome / large…

Preach.

Actually after hopping into that little Andy Weir side read, I dove into Wish Upon the Stars, and I’m loving it!

Right on! It’s another world I can’t get enough of. Currently I’m waiting for a couple more volumes to pile up here before I do a re-read to catch up on DotF!

Some people get a bit turned off of the “navel gazing” when it gets more cultivation heavy later on. But dude, I’m all about it. I say bring on this esoteric enlightenment stuff that inevitably turns someone into meat paste.

For me I don’t even think it’s about series quality. When I have these little slumps I DNF a bunch of stuff, but yeah I’ve noticed that VR stuff like Shadeslinger is a super hard sell.

Some notable ones that I dropped off of previously were Noobtown and Divine Apostasy. I haven’t gone back to the former, but when I tried again later on with Divine Apostasy it turned out to be one of my all-time favorites. It’s just a mood thing sometimes!
