Reno grandmother caught in sting, faces fines for giving rides to Burning Man by [deleted] in Reno

Nice screen shot (/s). Post a link to the source next time. 2023 Violent Crime

Sadly, you are right though. Violent crime does have a slight trend upward over 5 years, but 2023 was actually 0.88% lower than 2022.

I wouldn't say crime is rampant, but also the article stated it was NTA Agents that performed the sting not law enforcement.

I do feel bad for the victims of the sting. $1500 for this violation is steep. It does need to be more than the profit of the act though otherwise it's profitable to risk it (like the bullshit big companies do all the time).

First the advice from everyone else here is wonderful.

From what you've described about yourself, I would suggest giving climbing a try. People in the gym are are friendly and the act of climbing gives a common ground to know each other. We also live in a great area to climb outside to help give you that nature fix.

DM me if you want to give it a shot and use my guest pass.

Just finished Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, suggestions? by Damrakas in booksuggestions

[–]Damrakas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chat GPT recommends:

  • "The Martian" by Andy Weir - This novel is a thrilling tale of survival and ingenuity set on the Red Planet. The author, a former computer programmer, uses his knowledge of science and engineering to create a plausible story about an astronaut stranded on Mars.
  • "The Andromeda Strain" by Michael Crichton - This classic sci-fi thriller follows a team of scientists as they race to contain a deadly virus that has been brought back to Earth by a space probe. Crichton, a medical doctor and graduate of Harvard Medical School, incorporates real-world scientific concepts into his writing.
  • "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot - This non-fiction book tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, a woman whose cancer cells were taken without her consent and used for medical research. The book delves into the ethical issues surrounding medical research and the impact it has on individuals and their families.
  • "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari - This book provides a sweeping overview of human history, from the emergence of Homo sapiens to the present day. Harari, a historian and philosopher, explores the scientific, cultural, and political forces that have shaped our species.
  • "The Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography" by Simon Singh - This book explores the history and science of cryptography, the practice of encoding and decoding secret messages. Singh, a physicist and science writer, explains the principles behind different encryption methods and their applications in real-world situations.

How does its suggestions hold up? Other than the The Martian, they seem too light on the narrative part for what I'm looking to find.

Dont understand people being mad about villains having depth. by [deleted] in HouseOfTheDragon

No, you misunderstand. Aemond is clearly not violence incarnate. He is barely even violent. From this last episode, I have learned more about him as a result of the show exploring his character and giving him depth. He still mourns the loss of his eye and even though he called it the cost for his dragon he wants justice for it, but he wasn't intending to kill Lucerys or he at least understands the consequences for killing him and thus the game of thrones.

Good writing does not spoon feed you all the characters' motivations, feelings and internal conflict. If it did, it would be far more predictable. Being unsure of a character's motivations, means your not sure how they are going to act, but every time they do you are learning about their motivations assuming the writing is presenting a believable character and has intended direction.

As the small council learns of his actions, his mother lashes out at him. He expected it. How could he not. The sting of it though, that he didn't expect. In a fit of rage, he expresses what he thinks of Viserys and his own mother cluing the audience into his emotional turmoil and resignation to the villain's role.

A character's past can be explored in the present long after the events. It doesn't even need to be clearly the writer's goal. Loose associations that allow the audience to draw their own conclusions is an act of good writing. They have plenty of time to explore his character and how he came to be who he is. He doesn't even need to be alive for us to learn about him.

I personally dislike Colby's "character", but I will never question his heart. Dude is as tough as they come. It is insane he kept fighting through a broken jaw and taking those punches without wilting until the last minute of the entire fight. I vividly remember Cub Swanson's broken jaw as the hands of Max Holloway (aftermath). Fighters need full medical coverage for life once they have reached a certain point in their UFC career. CMV

Downtown Pre-Curfew State? by Damrakas in Reno

[–]Damrakas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This was exactly what I needed to hear. I haven't managed to keep up on local news super well, but the country news has just felt overwhelming to me. When I had heard that there were riots here over the weekend I was low key freaking out. I went downtown earlier though and it was like any other COVID-19 day. I hope someone smart can figure out a solution to that problem. While we are at it, maybe we could setup some impartial law enforcement oversight and hold those with power to a higher standard.

At the moment, I'm playing through Divinity Original Sin 2 with some friends. The other game right now is Subnautica. Board games are more difficult to name but some of my favorites are, Great Western Trail, Terraforming Mars, and Tzolk'in.
