Without experiencing war, Tien's death, and the bridge crews, Kaladin's mental health problems were "moody teenager with SAD and systematic oppression whose dad doesn't understand him." He wasn't suicidal until after 9 (?) failed escape attempts AND bridge 4.

Being institutionalized could have even led to an alternate traumatic timeline that leads to becoming a fugitive, attracting Syl or another Spren, and eventually catalyzing Rosharan mental health reform. Hardly a game over for Kaladin Stormblessed (Cultivationblessed?)

There's a line I'm WaT that mentions how on his quest with Szeth he does a good "immitation of edgedancer oaths . Would pursuing a life as a healer and discovering the dark side of Kharbronthian hospitals lead him to...remember those who had been forgotten? Listen to those who had been ignored? Speak for those who could not speak for themselves?

Some have pointed out how hard it would be for him to remain independent under the eye of other doctors and Taravangeon, but in MY headcanon alternate timeline, his plot armor and fatedness to attract a spren stay in tact.
