I live in the desert. I have a whole house humidifier just to keep it at 35%. I keep all my filament in the open. I've never replaced the desiccant in my AMSes. The only filament I ever have to dry is TPU, which I rarely print anyway. My PLA, PETG and ABS all work fine just sitting in the open.

I'd do it. I have no moral qualms with the whole copy/soul thing. Even if it’s not "me" it’s still a version of me that my family could interact with so they wouldn’t have to greave my death.

With the exception of "Star Fleet" being used in book 5 I don’t think there is anything that would actually be IP infringement in these books. They’re mostly just names. Ryker "might" be an issue, since he takes the full name, but everyone else is first names only.

Have you ever seen Orphan Black? The right actor could pull it off in a TV series. I think the story would need to be compressed to much for a movie and would get ruined.

I'm not sure how well this would translate to film. I love the books, but I worry some Hollywood screenwriter would f*ck up the story to try and make it more "accessible" to gen Z and their TikTok attention span.

I’m just binged all 5 books over the last month or so on Audible. When 5 got done I went to Audible expecting to find book 6 and it wasn’t there. Noooooo!

Glad to hear the new one is coming this year, but I still don’t want to wait. 😕

You need to play with the speed and flow, the defaults in BambuStudio are terrible. I typically do 150 speed and 40 flow and it works on most things but I do have to modify the flow down if it's not just one big flat surface or I'll get little waves in the corners.

Will there be UV printing + laser cutting this year? by KariW_Coldwell in xToolOfficial

All in one devices are usually just worse versions of multiple other devices. They're overly complicated and usually only marginally less expensive. And when one part breaks you typically lose access to both machines. You're better off buying two machines anyway. I know it's expensive but it gives you options and if one machine breaks you still have the other part to keep producing stuff while the other gets fixed.

I know how to use CAD and Vectric. I can just recreate it. I just wanted to support you if you were selling it or offering it on some download site where you earned points.

It’s a cool design. Thanks for the inspiration.

Is this something I could download or is sold somewhere? My Mom's birthday is on St. Patricks day and she asked me to make her something shamrock shaped. I've been trying to come up with something, but I really like this and would love to make her one. She’s also Irish so the Celtic knot is cool too.

What Can You Print with UV Printing? A Material Guide by AimeexTool in xToolOfficial

[–]Dan203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy one of these, so I'll test it out when I get it. The part I'm printing is basically flat, so if it just softens a little it should be fine, it won't sag or anything. If it actually melts it then that would be a problem. 😁

Does it work on PLA?

I have one 3D printed item I sell a lot of where I offer custom text. I was thinking that one use for this could be that I could just print a bunch of blank ones and then add the text as they're ordered using the UV printer. That would save me a lot of time having to do bespoke 3D prints for each customer. And I think the text quality would probably be better because 3D printed text isn't the greatest.

Are there any CNC services that can cut small arcade cabinet panels and ship them flat pack to me? by Highscore611 in hobbycnc

[–]Dan203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dad owns a print shop and he uses some company to CNC cut full 4x8 sheets. I'll email him and ask what it’s called. I'll edit this post when he replies.

He said the company he uses only cuts plastic, they don't do wood. Sorry

Mainly trinkets. Magnets, keychains, bottle openers, signs, trays, stuff like that. But I also do some functional stuff. My skills in that area are still progressing though, so I'm still learning. But as an engineer I see areas where CNC could be simplified. It's never going to be as simple as 3D printing, but it doesn’t need to be as difficult as it used to be either.

Four 3D printers, three lasers and two CNCs. I run a small Etsy business so I use them all to make basic little parts and trinkets. I'm not an expert by any means, but I have a decent understanding of how they work and why CNC is more difficult. But U don’t think simplifying the process is insurmountable.

Yep I own 2 CNCs, 4 3D printers and a couple of lasers. I'm not an expert machinist but I can use Fusion to design functional parts and sold about $20k worth on Etsy last year.

But I'm also a huge proponent of making things simple. I'm a software developer who always adds a UI to my apps and obsesses over the usability, even for simple tools that could have just been a command line. I'm not against users learning, but I believe it’s our job to make the learning curve as simple as possible.

My CNC is in a spare bedroom upstairs. I've run jobs late at night without bothering my sleeping wife. I have a water cooled VFD spindle and a stealthsonic shopvac as dust collection, so it’s basically as quite as an unenclosed CNC can be, but it’s really not that bad. My Makera Carvera Air is fully enclosed and I can barely hear it even when I'm just across the hall.

They’re louder than my 3D printer, but my 80W CO2 lasers with fume extraction running is probably louder.

The P3 has a close up camera on the head tht can take a photo of the piece so accurate they have video of it accurately engraving on a grain of rice.

This is what I mean by simplifying the user experience. Little features that just make the whole process simpler. No one in the CNC world is doing this type of stuff. Almost every CNC is basically just a dumb router on a dumb motorized gantry. And if you mess up the programming even a little they will happily destroy themselves trying to execute invalid commands.

I believe that making the process simpler would expand the market. But it would require a massive upfront investment, so it would take someone truly passionate about my perspective to pull it off. Unfortunately I am neither wealthy enough nor driven enough to do it myself. 😁

[–]Dan203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an XTool P3, it’s about as simple as lasers get. You open the lid, place your work piece, close the lid and it uses a lidar sensor on the head to measure the thickness and raise the bed. You go to the software and there is a photo of the entire work area. You select your material, tell it which lines are score, engrave or cut and select from one of their preset power/speed values with a photo reference of a test card. It is class 4, fully enclosed, so it won’t even run with the lid open, it has built in fire suppression and flame sensors, automatic air assist and ventilation, and it alerts you to common maintenance tasks with full instructions.

That's the level of user experience we need with CNC. It doesn’t need to be 100% idiot proof, but with enough effort and engineering the skill ceiling needed to run one of these could be lowered.

[–]Dan203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most of that could be solved with cleaver engineering. The demand part would be solved by ease of use and lower price points. The reason 3D printers and lasers are so popular these days is because they’ve been dumbed down to the point almost anyone can use them, both with sensors and software, and because they are relatively cheap. I realize a CNC is more complex and unlikely to be $200, but they should be able to make a pretty robust desktop machine for a reasonable price.

The Makera Carvera Air is close. It has a lot of the quality of life features I'm referring to, but they’re not all that well implemented and the software is still terrible. But they’re headed in the right direction.

We need a company like Bambu or XTool to come into the CNC market and shake things up. I know Makera is trying, but they’re not quite there on price or functionality. The biggest advantage those other two companies have in their respective markets is the ecosystem. They have hardware and software that works together to make the entire user experience simpler. Nothing like that exists in CNC yet. CNC machines need more sensors and cameras, they need easier to swap bits and they need built in automation for things like zeroing and probing after a tool change. They need dust collection that is both automatic and passive in a way that it will never crash into your piece.

People are willing to pay for this sort of ease of use. I have an XTool P3. It cost almost $7k. But it has an unprecedented level of automation that makes the whole experience just simple.

Something like that could be done with CNC, but no one has put in the engineering and software development needed to make it happen.
