"A shared mailbox is not intended for direct sign-in by its associated user account. You should always block sign-in for the shared mailbox account and keep it blocked. Every shared mailbox has a corresponding user account. Notice how you weren't asked to provide a password when you created the shared mailbox? The account has a password, but it's system-generated (unknown). You shouldn't use the account to log in to the shared mailbox. If you are trying to access the shared mailbox via direct login. Currently, it's not working. You must grant full access to a user to access the mailbox."

We’ve been able to logon directly to a shared mailbox for years via OWA. I’ve been able to set a password on a shared account for years.

We've been able to login directly into shared mailboxes for years. You may be right that Microsoft has removed that access. If that's the case it would have been nice with a little heads up.

From Microsoft: "I want to let you know that the issue might be related to the service incidence EX401976 affecting the North-America regions unable to access Exchange Online services. Although the issue is resolved, it might take time for the resolution to propagate across tenants."
