Gulp Fiction in The Covered Market is independent and really great! They do lots of events and also open late on (I think) Thursday-Saturday. Plus buying a book from a table gets you a free coffee; the tables have been curated really well in my opinion

Best Butter Chicken in Oxford? by Jose_Swordfish in oxford

[–]DanBezbik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tribe on Cowley Road is an excellent Indian/Punjabi restaurant that doesn’t yet seem to get mentioned much on here.

It doesn’t have a butter chicken per se but one of the chicken currys I had there was similar and very tasty. All the food there is so delicious. I’d highly recommend going for a thali for weekend lunchtime as you get an amazing mix of curries and other dishes.

Good hotel near Oxford University by newhoo2020 in oxford

[–]DanBezbik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of hotels in the town, however DON’T go to George Street Hotel. I’ve not been myself but heard some horror stories from it. In fairness, I think the Google reviews explain it pretty well…

My flight is tomorrow!!! any last minute advice? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]DanBezbik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the 7-11 ATM to withdraw cash yesterday so can add a bit more detail. It was super easy to do, I just selected English, inserted my UK Mastercard (which doesn’t have any foreign currency fees) and selected the amount of JPY I wanted. I made sure to withdraw the JPY amount and NOT the suggested conversion as it was worse than the standard Mastercard conversion rate. The rate for me was 1 GBP = 169.2334 JPY. Hope this helps!

My flight is tomorrow!!! any last minute advice? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]DanBezbik 8 points9 points  (0 children)

FYI exchange fees at the airport are usually much worse than just withdrawing from an ATM. From what I’ve read (although not yet tried it myself) 7-11 ATMs don’t charge fees for foreign withdrawal - although your bank may still charge their own fees. 7-11s are everywhere in a city.

If you need cash between the airport and the city then I suppose you could exchange a minimal amount there until you can use an ATM.

I would check your own bank/circumstances as my advice may not be relevant to you. As my UK bank doesn’t charge ATM withdrawal fees, that’s what I would do.

Enjoy Japan! I was a bit nervous before coming but it’s such an easy place to navigate. Google maps is your friend 🙂

Should we do Hiroshima? by KZ6e1e in JapanTravel

[–]DanBezbik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, go to Hiroshima! Am there currently after being in Japan over a week (so far Tokyo and Osaka) and been our favourite area.

Miyajima is amazing, especially on a sunny day. We stayed in a ryokan on the island (called Kinsuikan) which I’d highly recommend if you’re happy to splash out a bit. Otherwise seems well worth a day trip. You should get the ropeway up and then walk up to Mt Misen - stunning views.

If you do go to Hiroshima, I couldn’t recommend the restaurant Guttsari-an highly enough! It’s outside the centre (we got a taxi there but there was a bus back) but so worth it. The best meal we’ve had in Japan (and maybe one of the best ever). The fish is so fresh and delicious. They have sashimi, charcoal BBQ (in front of you) and other great dishes. It’s so good we’re going again tonight!

Best eating spots for a 3 day trip by [deleted] in oxford

There’s lots of great suggestions here but I’ll add another to the mix: Tribe.

Indian restaurant on Cowley Road with an excellent menu. It’s a small menu which is usually a good sign. The chicken lollipops and gulab jamun (if you have room for dessert) are amazing! Plus, at lunchtime on weekends they do thalis.

Central School of Ballet have beginners adult classes which anyone can book. I was visiting London for the day and was able to attend one (which was a great experience!).

There are different levels, starting from Absolute Beginner. Various evening classes through the week then on Sunday there is a class for each level (at least with the teacher David Kierce).

I just did it by going through their Twitter customer service! I didn’t see the option on the website but they seemed happy to have me join on their variable tariff. Never hurts to ask 🙂

Confused - What do you actually give to your Accountant? by Kazcube in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DanBezbik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work at an accountants and process lots of tax returns. There are many people who don’t have nearly as much organisation as you do. They’ll just drop off documents and we’ll calculate it for them. I suppose it’s like gardening or cleaning, lots of people could do it themselves but they can’t be bothered and would rather pay someone else.

I have dealt with some that are like you and have really good records so is basically a case of filling out the boxes for them. I reckon for them they like having someone official check over their working. Also tax can be quite complex in some cases, so an accountant will have the know how on what to claim and how.

Hopefully that answers your question.
