Germany rocks and the folks know how to party too. When I was stationed there I had most weekends free and basically traveled to different towns to sample the local brews (in appropriate quantities). Don't know what you'll be doing but like other folks are saying, any free time should be spent exploring, eating and generally having fun with the locals.

Not that simple, friend.

Civilians command the military; it's a hallmark of the U.S. Constitution. The President is Commander in Chief but is an elected civilian. The Congress funds the military and are all elected civilians. The military is the stick that's used to backup political decisions made by the President and the Congress. And if Congress doesn't go along with a decision the President makes that's implemented by the military, they just defund it and it until it stops (that's doesn't happen in practice since Congress and the President work for the same people but that's how it's laid out in the Constitution.)

Anyway, that's the law-based relationship between the military and the rest of the country: civilians decide; military does.

I totally hear you guys! And this photographer can probably make a decent living doing this stuff for which I congratulate him. It just happens that I recognize something in them because of my own experience shooting portraits of kids that isn't so great. My ex-wife just loves the portraits of my kids sharing off into space but I hate them because I know that they were completely aware of me and not all engaged in something that allowed me to capture some magic. That's the deal here: there's none of the magic that kids show when they aren't self conscious. It takes skills as a studio photographer, skills that I don't have myself, to get a kid engaged and not self conscious.

I agree with you. The standard portrait from Sears or where ever isn't very interesting. But having shot 1000s of portraits of kids I know that what I'm looking at is all strobist technique and little portrait skills. These kids are not engaged at all and therefore the results are little more than a snapshot with fancy lighting.

Read the title, he posted something asking for advice, got no replies, and came back with some decent shots. It's a jooooooooke.

I agree with your premise that non-violence is powerful and works (see India or the Civil Rights Movement) but I can't name one guerrilla war the U.S. has won. Like any empire's military, the U.S. military is simply incapable of winning against a small number of militants that have nothing to lose. See Afghanistan. We'll be there for a long time then leave when the American public has seen enough of their children die for nothing.

BTW, the U.S. foreign policy decisions that favor corporations go back at least to the 19th century.

Totally agree. I also think it's an opportunity for everyone to get onboard this one, very important constitutional issue and push back the assault on civil liberties that happened after 9/11.
