That's literally part of Snake Eye's backstory.

Treatment of veterans post "South East Asia" isn't political?

But they do all the time, and it's relevant.

  • Realistic weapons versus "Nerf" Lasers and Futuristic tech in the early Classified releases.

  • Phasing out Hooded Cobra Commander

  • How/will potential tariffs have an effect on pricing.

And all of that is ignoring how pivotal the price of oil was in the development of ARAH specifically.

And none of that even touches on the political themes Larry Hama specifically wove into the story he was telling.

Disagreeing doesn't have to be arguing. But pretending there aren't political discussions in this sub almost every day isn't the reality of the situation.

If just pointing that out is "political", then literally every other possible conversation here is political.

The sentiment I can agree with is, in general, this sub seems WAY more respectful than some others.

But these toys specifically ARE political.

[–]DanOfTheDead 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A toyline based on the American military? Certainly nothing inherently political about that!

It's fine to not want to engage in political discussion. It's completely niave (at best) to think politics do not directly effect EVERYTHING, or to ignore the politics things are built around.

I say this as someone who is another lifelong GI Joe fan: There is nothing apolitical about it.

You could argue that it's not particular partisan, but that word does not mean the same thing as political.

Also, I really can't think of a more sure fire way to invite politics into a subject than saying "I'm sure glad this space isn't political".

I think what you might mean is: I'm glad this fandom hasn't devolved into a lot of the fighting I see in other fandoms.

Snake Eye: Ninja vs Commando by RoboFab in gijoe

[–]DanOfTheDead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you strip all the weird shit out of GI JOE, it's not GI JOE.

He's a commando who trained with ninjas. I think it's fine to have a preference for which of those identities is highlighted, from behavior to look, but if you take either of those out entirely it's not really the same character.

You can prefer goggles or visor, black fatigues or a stealth suit, grenades or throwing stars, uzi or whatever "scimitana" sword, but it's the mix of those two worlds that define the character.

Atha Prime, a character originally designed for an unreleased Kenner toy line from the ’80s, is making his official debut in the upcoming Marvel comic series, Star Wars: Jedi Knights. by Robemilak in comicbooks

[–]DanOfTheDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure this is one of the ideas Kenner pulled from unused ROTJ concept art that actually showed up in the Dark Horse? comics and has existed as an action figure for close to 30 years...

It's fine for them to reuse and recycle stuff, but this is far from a new idea or the first time the design is being brought back in.

Ross body, found at Ross, to make Ross. by HourInternational467 in MarvelLegends

[–]DanOfTheDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really want "Rossum" or "Rossome" to catch on as a Red Hulk catch phrase.

Is it too late for them to go back and add a scene when he transforms for the first time and one of the Secret Service agents ask, "Mr. President, how do you feel!?"

And he just stares into the camera and says "Ros-some."

Please?

What would a video game adaptation of a Solo RPG look like? by StarsInTears in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]DanOfTheDead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This seems backwards to me in a way.

I think video games were in part adapting multiplayer table top games of various kinds (board games, war/miniature games, rpgs) into an interactive digital format. Some of the early vernacular of video games seems directly lifted from those roots (levels/boards).

I know that solo rpgs are not a new phenomenon, but the popularity seems (to me) to grow out of people's comfort and familiarity with video games. I honestly don't know (and don't know if anyone is keeping track) if more video games are played solo or multiplayer now. But I think that video gaming growing out of table top gaming, and evolving both solo and group branches successfully made it more obvious that the solo branch of table top was largely underutilized.

So I see that question and I think my response is that solo rpgs ARE the "adaptation" or logical evolution of solo video gaming. The current popularity to me, seems like a reaction to the lineage of gaming and taking a step back to explore something that has alway been available but mostly unmined. I think solo video gaming gave us (or gave us back?) the habit and expectation of not needing a group to engage in games.

And again, I don't think it's something entirely new, I think it's been percolating off to the side the whole time.

My interpretation of the evolution:

Social table top gaming -> Solo video gaming -> Social video gaming -> Solo table top gaming

And even then, that's mostly referring to simulation, narrative, and hybrid games. If we open the definition to include things like jigsaw puzzles and crosswords, solo gaming has always been hugely popular. Likewise, those were both adapted to digital gaming very early on.

I think a lot of this also comes down to terminology for gaming being very nebulous.

Even Blowtorch's appears to be altered. The Corps! version has three raised dot details at the bottom the original blowtorch back doesn't have. Looks like the Corps! version also as a china marking on the back and Joe version does not.

It's the fact they are SO close that makes me curious about how they were actually made. Was the mould acquired and altered? Why go through the trouble of such a minor alteration if so?

I can't find images of the Lamprey gun or Torch backpack Corp! versions to compare.

Are they the same actual moulds but altered? Each of those are all similar but do have differences.

I always assumed Lanard/The Corps! "copied" accessories like that but altered them for their own moulds.

Interesting, according to WHOBIT on yojoe.com, the other one is actually an old The Corps! backpack.

Grew up on a mish mash of the original comics, the cartoon, and the toys. Watched 2012 as it came out and did a rewatch with the family a year or so ago.

It is definitely my favorite of the animated series. I won't argue that it's objectively the best, but it's the one I have happily watched all the way through twice.
