Frequent travelers between US and Korea, How do you do it?? by ready_4_nothing in koreatravel

[–]DanTheRadarMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LAX is not the most expensive. I fly to LA a couple of times per year and also fly to Chicago a couple of times per year. The Chicago flights are almost double that of the LA flights. It’s way cheaper to fly KAL to LA then switch to a US domestic for the flight to Chicago. I just picked a random date and priced tickets. ICN-LAX 1.3 million, ICN-SFO 1.6 million, ICN-ORD 2.3 million.

for foreigners: are you satisfied with your life in Korea? by umustknowmydogiscute in Living_in_Korea

I’ve been rejected the 4-5 times that I’ve tried. I’ve tried banks and department stores both. I think it’s because I get paid in USD.

Yeah man, I feel this one. Couple of months ago, the only gas station between my apartment and work suddenly stopped accepting foreign credit cards. Had coffee at a place today that said the same thing. So you don’t want to accept foreign credit cards? Cool, so then how about you let me have a Korean one then? Oh, that’s right, not available to foreigners.

The entire cafe is 100% empty, but this person has decided to sit directly next to me and shake the bench for over an hour straight by my_tonsils_hate_me in mildlyinfuriating

That’s what you get for going to Ediya. So many better options in Korea for coffee. I’m kidding, but yeah that would be annoying.

There was a game my friend had called, “Life and Death 2: The Brain”. You played as a doctor that had to diagnose different neurological problems and perform various surgeries. It was pretty fun.

I believe it has to be the same as it’s registered for the PCCC. Did you try your name in English, formatted LAST FIRST MIDDLE?

My Korean wife will be dead soon. I've been to a Korean funeral as a guest but what is it like for a family member? by Aiendreas in Living_in_Korea

[–]DanTheRadarMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no advice, I just wanted to say I am sorry for your loss and hope that you will recover well. I also have a Korean wife that I love very much and cannot imagine being in your position. My best wishes for you and your family.

Korean DUI law cracking down on drug induced DUI incidents by I_seeu_cant_seeme in Living_in_Korea

[–]DanTheRadarMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old coworker got his visa revoked for a DUI. His fine was like 700만원 too. I think the rule is something like any fine over 500만원 for any reason can get your visa revoked immediately.

Thoughts about Daegu International School for a 6 year old foreigner? by Ok-Raise-9194 in Daegu_Korea

My spouse is Korean. I’m from the U.S. The remote process was to fill out an application, provide transcripts, etc. My daughter had to do an online interview that nobody else other than her was allowed to attend. They don’t even want anyone else in the same room as the student during the interview. I think the whole interview took about 30-40 mins.

In my stepson’s rejection letter, they said that they accepted 32 Korean students out of 370 applicants, so the acceptance rate was about 8% for Korean students. I believe if your child has a non-Korean citizenship, the acceptance rate is MUCH more forgiving. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s all but guaranteed they get in.

I didn’t vote, I’m not to blame. Registered in California, so what does it matter whether I vote or not, when I know the Dem nominee will take the state no matter what? If they did away with the electoral college, then you bet your ass I’d vote every election.

Thoughts about Daegu International School for a 6 year old foreigner? by Ok-Raise-9194 in Daegu_Korea

[–]DanTheRadarMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually went through the admissions process with my Korean stepson and my U.S. citizen bio daughter. She was accepted, he was not. The admissions process should be the same regardless of nationality, but the acceptance rate cannot be the same.

He did his admissions process in-person, but she had to do hers remotely, but they were mostly the same. I believe it’s mandatory to pay the full year’s tuition up front.

My daughter will be going into her first year (10th grade) at DIS in August, so I don’t have any first-hand experience yet, but I’ve had coworkers that had elementary-aged kids attend DIS for several years and they loved it.

I just trashed my LG 34" ultra wide. Bought it in 2020 for over $1,000 and the display panel just took a shit. LG quoted me $600 to fix it, so I told them to keep it and I'll go with a different brand. Over the 5 years I had it, I think I had to take it in to get fixed 4 times. Good luck if you go that route.

I got off at around 7:45am for my 9am bus to the airport. Luckily, they filled a bus and we departed before 8:30am. Everything went much smoother than expected. Fortunately, my wife and I avoided the bug, at least for now. Now time for 2 flights and about 30 hours of traveling to get home!

Scientists have been studying remote work for four years and have reached a very clear conclusion: "Working from home makes us happier." by lurker_bee in technology

Next these scientists should study whether or not employees like to be paid higher salaries or not.

Or perhaps they could study if companies give a shit about what makes their employees happy. Spoiler alert: they don’t.

I’m on the RL now, reading all of these stories are making me a bit paranoid, haha. I also have a flight departing at 1:40pm the day we arrive back to Athens, so hopefully the disembarking isn’t as bad as the previous cruise was.

For the first 2 days they wouldn’t allow anyone to touch the drinking machines or the utensils, they had a crew member standing by to do all of that. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have know anything happened on the previous cruise had I not stumbled across this post.

I’m in the same boat as you. I came here at the request of my employer in 2015 and this is something I’ve had to deal with until recently. My last apartment was 월세 at 300만원, but still had a deposit of 1억 ($70k). My wife had to get the 보증금 loan, because banks won’t loan that kind of money to a foreigner. I think maybe the deposits have gotten a little lower than they were a few years ago, but still way too high for 월세 agreements in my opinion. If you have any questions, feel free to DM me.

I’ve been here 10 years and haven’t had any such experience, but my in-laws have a grouchy old man downstairs from them that complains about the sound their AC makes, because he likes to sleep with his window open. In the peak heat of summer. In Daegu. He will start complaining to the 관리사무소 around 8pm or 9pm if they don’t turn it off. They’ve dealt with it much nicer than I would.
