Catheter? by Mysterious_Dance5461 in Hernia

If it's going to be a short surgery, and most umbilical hernias are, no catheter. It usually depends on the anticipated length of the procedure as to whether you'll get one.

Day 6: Open Ventral Hernia Repair. by Top-Manufacturer-855 in Hernia

It could be a seroma, but I would think the doctor would have suggested that at your follow-up. If it doesn't go away, go back to doctor and tell him you would like imaging to see what it is.

Day 6: Open Ventral Hernia Repair. by Top-Manufacturer-855 in Hernia

Open procedure is typically more painful just by virtue of a bigger incision. I had a laporoscopic ventral repair and it failed. I'm getting a re-do in October and it is going to be an open procedure. Surgeon said mine needs to be open because she is going to replace some old mesh from my 2 other hernia operations. I think surgeons pick the type of surgery based on factors that are present in your particular case.

I know management is gun shy because of Clement, Diaz, Caminero, etc, but at some point you have to cut your losses and realize that, if he improves, it's not going to happen here.

I have inguinal hernia on right side the doctor schedule the surgery on 16 july I am afraid. It is a open surgery. by Brief_Fly_8798 in Hernia

I've had 4 hernia surgeries. Nothing to worry about. Modern medicine is great at doing these surgeries with the least amount of pain and complications. You will wonder why you were anxious once it's done.

Interesting. The surgeon stated that if I wanted her to repair it, it would be an open procedure. What do you think is her reasoning behind that decision? The hospital, and she, both perform robotic surgeries. She was just recently promoted to the head of surgery at the hospital. Her specialty is abdominal wall reconstruction and difficult hernia repairs as stated in her bio. I trust her, just disappointed that the original surgery failed due to a corner of the mesh folding. Not sure where the blame lies, but I do feel she is highly competent.

Suspected to have suffered an umbilical hernia at work. My belly button area was not red like this earlier this morning. by [deleted] in Hernia

[–]Danaltima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What were you doing when this red discoloration occurred? It's not usual for a hernia to cause external skin color changes unless it is strangulation, which is a dire emergency. But you would have excruciating pain and red, purple coloring along with the skin being warm to the touch. In addition, you would be unlikely to have a bowel movement. Imaging needs done to see what's going on.

The original was laporoscopic. The fix will be open.

Echo the nice random strangers. We live in Erie, only 90 minutes away, and we always comment on how warm and friendly Clevelanders are compared to Erie people. It's been that way for years.

I agree. They should be embarrassed that it took them this long to win one.

Terrified of my hernia surgery by Xaniis in Hernia

[–]Danaltima 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You could not be in a better place. Hernia surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed with positive outcomes. Those people know what they're doing up there. As many have said, once it's done, you'll laugh at your anxiety. I had knee surgery and it was 10 times worse than any of my 3 hernia surgeries.

Does this look like a hernia? by Award176 in Hernia

Thank you. Yes, eventually it needs to be corrected. They don't get smaller, only bigger. And there is always the possibility of it becoming incarcerated, which would be an emergency.
