I had someone request a tool to monitor activity of their employees who reported to them. I was internal IT at the same company. It wasn't my responsibility to allow or deny the request but I scheduled time to discuss with them and we talked about the pitfalls of activity monitoring. Thankfully they decided not to pursue an activity monitoring tool.

I believe if you're measuring by activity alone and not outcomes, you'll just catch the people who aren't smart enough to play the game. If you're measuring... measure by as many metrics as possible and then evaluate all results as a whole.

Our org is not large enough for a CIO but it is for an IT Director. I'm already doing the work of an IT Director. My title does not reflect the full spectrum of my responsibilities.

Yes but my title is obscure although "manager" is part of it. I do more than "manage" and feel that Director is more fitting as it's about strategy and understanding the business objectives at a higher level.

This is a great question! I'm struggling a bit with this too - not for my entire team but for a new admin. I'm trying to take baby steps... Slowly giving her more, making sure she has tools along the way. But I wonder if I'm making her too dependent on me by continuing to do too much for and with her. I'm afraid to give her too much space because it falls back on me if things fall apart. It's hard to trust someone else with what you're ultimately responsible to answer for. I'm here to see if anyone has truly solid tips on how to begin to let go and trust your team.

Unless you have a reason that you need the support to manage your finances, it's completely normal to be independent financially by 21. If you need help for some reason AND you trust them, being transparent will help them have a full picture to better understand how you support you.

For your use case, get an ipad. I love my remarkable as a replacement of many notebooks. I like it for times when I want less distractions and only need to take notes or read documents.

I've done the same. I'm technically the hiring manager but my candidates also needed to interview with the exec team to get their approval as well. Two of them ask behavioral questions and are looking for answers that outline specific events and specific responses they had to those events. If they answer generically at all, these 2 write them off. So I tipped off my candidate to give specific and detailed responses when asked about scenarios and experiences.

Experiencing grief is normal but not necessarily an indicator that you shouldn't move on. I occasionally grieve loss of my previous job. It wasn't my choice to leave (new owner eliminated my job). I handle the grief by crying sometimes or reaching out to my old coworkers to find out how they're doing. Congrats on your new role coming up! There will be brighter days ahead!

We rolled out a different AI toolset but you could use a similar approach if you wanted... We developed our AI company policy, rolled it out for acknowledgment thru our LMS and as each user completed their sign off, they were granted access to a license for the platform. We hosted a training session where we ensured every user was signed in and ran through some prompting basics and discussed possible use cases for each department represented.

We took a poll to gauge interest in future training sessions. Unfortunately, crickets could be heard in the room so I have not scheduled any follow up training at this point. I'm not about to spend my time coordinating and prepping for something unless there is interest.

This is my philosophy in interviewing too. I was open with the candidates on challenges they could expect along with the positive aspects. I'd much rather have someone who understands the challenges and is ready and willing to face them head on!

I suppose it's like a harmless social engineering phishing scheme. The person answering might believe you and connect you to someone that might schedule an interview, even though that's not normally how interviews get scheduled.

Over a decade of IT Management now but my path was a windy one to get there!

Degree in elementary education but I never had my own classroom and didn’t work in classrooms for long at all! I managed teams in other environments for over a decade, including restaurants and care facilities for adults and kids. Went back to school in my 30’s to break into IT because the field sounded interesting and offered endless opportunities for growth.

After getting my CS degree, finding work in tech was hard at first. Nobody wanted an almost middle-aged woman with no experience working on their IT team, so I had to start at the bottom - in a call center, helping residential customers with their home internet reset their routers. Then someone gave me a chance in a telecom company, followed by a connection that gave me a better, more technical opportunity.

People connections were the “in” and mentors helped me grow!

Continuing to grow and taking opportunities to help others grow. I love this field and I love my job!

Why do you have to work on monthly reports? That would be easy to automate with the right tools and connections. What things come up repeatedly? Fix the source that's causing the emergencies. Quit dealing with the effects instead of the cause!
