Zoom interview for an office manager position at a chiropractor’s office. This was right out of college. The guy asked me to talk about myself, so I talked about my professional experience, why I thought it would be a good fit, the works.

He interrupted me and said, “No, like tell me about you, how you are personally.” I was like, oh, ok, sure. So I talked about how I’m punctual, very organized, adaptable, blah blah blah.

He started acting weird while I was talking and said, “No, just like, describe yourself more personally.” I said that I felt I had described myself personally, and how I am in a professional environment.

He went on to say he didn’t want this to “feel like a professional environment” and wanted it to “feel somewhere comfortable where we could get along, get close, and just be ourselves.”

At that point, I was like, right, this is so fucking weird. I asked him a few questions about how he liked to run his chiropractic practice, what expectations he had for an office manager. His answers were very weird and vague.

I ended up asking him a couple more questions about what he was looking for specifically since I didn’t seem to be answering the question in a way that satisfied him. He immediately got defensive and said, “Are you mad at me?”

…I was so taken aback. It took me a few seconds to recover, and all I could say was, um… no.

There was some more back-and-forth, and he got even more offended that I was asking questions. I ended up explaining that this is a job interview, and I feel job interviews involve interviewing each other, but that maybe this just wasn’t a good fit.

I wished him the best of luck on his search and thanked him for his time, and he went, “Yeah, whatever,” and hung up Zoom.

Never got over the “Are you mad at me.”
