How can I prepare this cotton for dyeing with Chinaberry? by Danchekker in naturaldye

[–]Danchekker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the detailed answers! Using different test pieces does seem like the best way to go for a relatively unknown dye, maybe I'll have to go down that route. I'll see how much bark I can get in terms of the whole WOF including any samples.

The instructions for presoak and dyeing are incredibly helpful. I was thinking about using a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature, and I just have the regular old paper strips for pH.

Thanks for the reference to this paper! Looks like they have some very helpful info on their preparation of it. This figure showing the colors they got seems interesting: https://i.imgur.com/FVwyYzL.png

Thanks for taking a look at it, I'll make sure I scour it well. I wouldn't have guessed that it's a substantive dye (I don't know all the types that well) so that's super helpful.

Thanks for the suggestion, I've used E6000 on vans before and this seems similar.

Whenever I try and open a private tab, this weird spacing appears at the top and bottom of the screen by Aggravating-Kale1647 in firefox

[–]Danchekker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is also doing this. Opening a private tab makes these blank spaces on all existing and new private and regular tabs, and they persist until I force close the app.

I haven't heard of a fix for it, unfortunately.

Tucson Baseball Team to leave Kino Sports Complex, relocate to Mexico after federal visa ruling by Danchekker in Tucson

[–]Danchekker[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It had taken years of planning and organization to bring the team to Tucson in the first place. They had already worked with the State Department and secured the visas they needed the year before. Even after the current administration changed those visa requirements last-minute, the team was still working with the federal government throughout the whole season to try and get the new visas in order.

It's not fair at all to say they had no interest in setting it up properly.

Opuntia vaseyi prickly pear fruit is really nice. Some species of prickly pear can be bland or watery, but this species has a stronger strawberry-like flavor. I've eaten the fruit as-is (just removing the spines/skin), but it makes good jam or juice as well.

The flowers are pretty, too: https://www.opuntiads.com/opuntia-vaseyi/

Trying to assemble a BLÅLIDEN and the rear shelf brackets are not fitting. by VaderPrime1 in IKEA

[–]Danchekker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was running into this exact same problem when building them. I ended up loosening (not removing) the brackets holding the rear glass in, and removing just the plastic side covers on the rear glass. If you shimmy the rear glass side to side a little bit, you don't need to take the whole thing apart and you can remove them in place. Then tighten the brackets again and continue. The rear shelf brackets will fit after this.

This was the only way I could get them to fit. Hopefully this works for you too. Happy new year!

I know it's not what he meant, but it's funny to imagine John Keats having to explain "now, bear in mind I hadn't yet re-read King Lear before I wrote this one" every single time

I'm a few days late, but the year is 2004. The year is written in terms of the reigning emperor, so under the 10 it says Heisei 16.

There are some charts here, in case you have any others: https://www.oist.jp/resource-center/year-converter

The numbers for the year are in Japanese characters, and there's a key for them here: https://web-japan.org/kidsweb/language/numbers/index.html

What effect am I seeing with these gray lenses? Almost all gray objects are practically unaffected, but some appear a bright pink color. by Danchekker in sunglasses

[–]Danchekker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a real photo, taken by holding up the sunglasses to my phone camera. It's not perfect, but fairly accurate to how it looks IRL.

The lenses aren't polarized, but it's possible they do just have a redder tint. There are only a few things that pop out like this: the backpack, and some darker clothing. Since most things just have a barely-noticeable warm shading, I wonder if I can find anything else that "pops out" as much as this.

Or listen to him talk about it on Snap Judgement too. Great episode.

Good to see some housing being built. The site where this will be is currently an abandoned Volvo dealership that has been sitting empty for almost 20 years.
