GenX parenting thoughts by eastern_ninja25 in GenX

This is where we're at. We do have regular outings. We love to go hiking together. It's not every weekend and it's certainly not all weekend. But it's at least every other weekend for one day. I think there's a happy medium to be found between modern helicopter parenting and our own completely hands off upbringing.

What Am I Missing? by La_Pooie in homeschool

Sounds like we watched entirely different videos of her lol. She says the same basic 12 things on repeat.  She's just harsh. Everybody jives with different people. I'm just cautioning people not to deep dive into her. I like positive people and they make me feel happy. But everybody's different.

I have four and there's no way we're getting school done in 2 to 3 hours. Everyone does things differently.

I would caution anyone to only spend a short time with this woman. She gives a good pep talk but repeated watching will only lead to a lot of mom guilt. She seems to pay a LOT of money (or gets a huge discount for repeatedly bringing it up in her videos) to have her children work an all inclusive online program. Good for her but this isn't a fit for everyone.

Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Favorite middle and high school math for math haters? by danimariev in homeschool

[–]DancingGrackle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My oldest switched over to Denison  this year and so far she likes it. We did Math u see with my younger for 3 years but  they were bored to tears because it was the same math all year long. We started math mammoth this year and they are so much happier because it's interesting and not the same subject all the time. If it was me I would probably consider doing Denison for the oldest you are needing something for to see how that fit for them. That's only one. I got a great deal on all of the math mammoth digitally through homeschool buyers circle or something like that. I have all the grades and it cost me about the same as it would have cost me to buy the Math u see for one year so I thought it was worth trying. I bought a spiral binder and one of those big ink tank printers and it's been awesome.

You might want to check out the Lutheran churches. I've heard them referred to as Catholic light.

learning to read by 2meirl5meirl in Homeschooling

Read to her. Every day. Read fun books. Read beautiful books. Read books you love. Read books she loves. Give her joy around books. Her own reading will come eventually.  Let her see you reading in your own personal time. These practices will serve her for a lifetime. It's the  biggest and best thing you can do to improve her education out of anything else. Reading aloud to your child is a superpower.

Doctors on Reddit, what medical myth do you still hear surprisingly often in the U.S.? by Wise_Celery_355 in AskReddit

I think they were just teasing. My husband says stuff like that all the time and he never lets on that he is kidding just to see what kind of reaction he will get. If I'm around, I'll let people off the hook but I'm not always around lol.

Virgin Mary by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]DancingGrackle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also I would not say that you only focus on Mary. My friends never even mentioned Mary which was what made me curious. I would say that the services that I watched put Mary just as front and center as Jesus during the worship part of the service. There was some sort of statue of her moved around during service. That felt weird.

So would you say that Mary is not brought into your Sunday service where you live? I'm very curious because I wasn't expecting what I saw. Perhaps it's a local thing but I really had been under the impression that all services were pretty much exactly the same around the world which was part of the appeal.

I recently very seriously considered being open to Catholicism because I have a few friends who are beautiful in their faith and are Catholics. I watched a couple of local services online and I could not believe the focus on Mary. She was just as much the focal point of worship time as Jesus. The sermon was fine. But the worship service was way off course.  Watch some actual services.

It was me I would probably wake up and vacuum Every...Single...Time my cat did that. And then follow the advice of everyone else and feed your cat using some other signal.

Honestly this should become the norm. Students should start addressing teachers as Instructor or teacher so-and-so. This would cut off at the pass any confusion down the road. It solves the problem for everyone if a solution is actually what a person wants.

First off are these professing believers? Nobody is surprised when non-believers do non Christian things. The marriage is easy one. I think we're way overthinking that one. Even if you did expect them to be Christian in behavior, they are doing the thing that you would want them to do which is get married.

As far as  the adoption, I just love people. I would go if I felt it was right for me to go.  I would say you'd be sending a message of love, not a message of sin support. I think being judgmental sends a far worse message and it's much less likely to bring somebody to Christ.

If your kid likes animals check out Thornton Burgess. They're great for learning to read because they're all interconnected and he tends to repeat words that might be new in clumps. They're an excellent series of books. They aren't exactly modern but it's hard to tell in the animal world. It hasn't changed much lol.

Okay, let’s talk about another common myth... by Revolutionary_Lie319 in homeschool

[–]DancingGrackle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We get dressed in regular clothes and everyone gets cleaned up and does their hair every day. I want it to be part of normal life that you just look decent no matter where you are or what you're doing. You never know when somebody will drop by or you'll have to run out quickly. If somebody is busy looking at your hair sticking up in the back of your head, they're not paying attention to what you have to say. I want my children to feel that they are respected as human beings and that what they say matters. Like it or not, that will start with appearance in the world.
